Just an idea for a video. Take a not too quality log and let a lucky u tuber call the shots while you open it up and cut it into boards. When to roll it, where to start, etc. He (or she) could be live on a phone or maybe even a video link. It would really make us average joes appreciate the skill it takes to be a sawyer. Love your channel!

Kind of a perfect wood. Won't rot when put in the ground as fence posts, lasts longer than cedar and burns like oak. I have them all around my house and in 18 years, not one has broken in the wind. We've had 85MPH here before and they bend with it but never snap.

Love black locust. They say that if you find a bunch of black locust pins while walking in the woods, there used to be a timber frame barn there. Everything but the pins rotted away.

I’ve done plenty of walkways in my time, never used shiplap, seems it would trap water and dirt in between the boards, I’ve always left a gap for drainage, and used roof felting with stone surface as the non slip. Hope it works out for ya.
@chriswest1996
@chriswest1996 2 года назад
I guess it depends if you go upper edge up or lower edge up. This is lower edge up, which drains.
@lastguy8613
@lastguy8613 2 года назад
Yeah I do t understand why he'd use ship lap on a deck, it's just going to trap water in there somewhere. A bit like using horizontal tongue and groove on a exterior which seemed to be a fad here in New Zealand in the 60s ad 70s. It always rots bad.. Saying all this I don't want to question Marks excellent videos, his work on machines or anything. Just why he's putting it on a deck floor
@bluethunder1951
@bluethunder1951 2 года назад
@@chriswest1996 when the dirt gets in there nothing is going to drain and the dirt will retain the moisture to create rot.
@bluethunder1951
@bluethunder1951 2 года назад
@@lastguy8613 there’s some that say, if the boards are 100% sealed on all four sides there’s no worries about moisture getting in the wood, that may work in some areas, but this is a walk way with foot traffic and shovels eventually the finish wears off or gets beat up. But hey when you make your own boards to replace them materials aren’t a factor.
@markgalicic7788
@markgalicic7788 2 года назад
not bad for blue spruce to last for 8 years , the lap goes up on the top and makes it drain out.

Mark in the 1st 5 sec and more we can see a tremendous war wound top right on your forehead. How'd you acquire it? 3:47 you mention ''GROUNDMEAT''. IDK if you're aware of a channel by the title ''PERKINS BUILDING BROTHER''? A year or so ago Jaime, one of the brothers, was working on a machine, and he had lost his train of thought for a moment and the machine chewed off three fingers, I believe. They did a series, where he explains exactly how things transpired. He also shows the fitting of his prosthetics. He took it like a true ''SPARTAN'' in my humble opinion. Let me know if you've seen these guys, if not check 'em out. I think you'll enjoy them. They're out of Appalachia,(North Cackie-Lackie, I think. WHY IS IT CALLED LOCUST?

locust is long lasting wood,,,,i would say...our cabin down home has huge locust posts on each corner..the biggest on the farm...so you got 3 phase in your garage,,wow...thats nice,,,years back,,i got a Dewalt model 1,,i forget,,,but it was a rad arm saw,,5 hp...3 phase,,converted to 2 phase,, it was about a ton and a half..the shop i got it from quit using it,had it outside covered up..it took me 6 hours to take it apart to move it to my garage..everything worked on it...it was one of dewalts first models,,,,the saw motor was built in the saw that moved on the upper track,,it all weight about 400 lbs,,but was real easy to move back and forth..we had one of these saws in my trade school..so cool to use,,

Mark this is John Sellers in Warren AR and I would like to know what kind of lumber are you using on the head board in your shop. I'm going to a guess and say it's oak and pine. I have bought a HM130MAX and started milling some lumber. (red,white, and post oak logs, cypress logs and yellow Pine logs). Don't know if you have heard of a Potlatch Corp. they are a sawmill here in Warren and they have thousands of acres of timberland here around Warren. We also have a hardwood flooring plant here. Population of just over 8 thousand small town to have a sawmill and a hardwood flooring plant here. I sure do like watching ya'll milling lumber and u have taught me a lots. Me, my dad and my brother were in construction business and worked for GP plywood plants in 3 plants in AR, 3 plants in MS. and 1 in LA.

Love you videos, beautifull logs and boards, no bullshit, and dedicated people with characters. I have a question about releasing tensions during sawing, do the resulting twists recess during drying provided you stack the boards flat under some load or will the twists remain after the wood is dried? Cheers from Belgium!

Be still, my heart. Black Locust is my favorite 'exotic' wood...more so than the considered species. I love the coloration, and the way the growth rings just seem to 'pop' under a couple coats of spray lacquer. O'course...as you mentioned, it IS harder than Chinese arithmetic, but nothing good sharp tooling can't handle. You will love crafting with it!
