Making Cabinet Doors - Spray Finishing, Putting Them On and Fixing Problems

It took most of a full day and nearly 2 liters of water based poly to finish the doors with three coats front and back. I sanded between coats, 220 grit between the first and second, and 400 between the second and third.
The hinge fix at the end may seem like butchery to the inexperienced idealists watching, but it's an example of a very common way to deal with a problem. The purest burns up a day resizing the door and refinishing it, while the realist spends 20 minutes mortising in two hinges. And, unless you know what to look for, it's a fix that will never been seen by the casual observer.
Here are some ways that you can help support the work I do in making these videos:

Just plane the doors down where they meet. You can touch up with a brush & never even tell. Looks Great👍Vinny 🇺🇸

The pure solution is to resize both doors, not just one, so that they remain symmetrical.

This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ru-vid.comUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

Funny as you mentioned finishing your cabinets outside, I thought, "Well when I so this, I get bugs all over my finish." I would consider myself luck to have only one fly to deal with. Beautiful job on the cabinets.

Nice simple recovery on the door overlap problem. I'm sure you know that another solution would have been to replace the hinges with one's that have a slightly bigger overhangs. Doors look great. Love the figure in some of your maple. I've only been getting more into woodworking the last five years or so and finding that recovery from and hiding errors is key to success.

those doors look incredible! I clearly need more tools. bought a table saw over the weekend. I debated building it but it was about time so I bought one at a reasonable deal. for the work I have planned for it, it will pay for its self. besides, I'm working in my own home and I'm just cutting my chops before I get into the more visible projects. I plan to build a new kitchen so really I'm just learning on my old one until I get the time needed to do the real work.

When I spray pain or spray clear coats on the bugs come and land on what I am doing. I mean, no bugs anywhere to be seen then I spray and I have grass bugs (little green things) jump up and on it or flies, or moths, etc... A real attraction for them and, of course, they get stuck and screw up my work. No matter where I have lived this always happens so I am amazed you can do it with only that single issue you had.

Hi John I really love your videos. You are revered as a down-to-earth highly skilled Craftsman in my opinion. I just finished making my cabinet doors and drawer fronts and I'm very interested in the type of polyurethane you used the brand even and I would also love to know about your setup and what HVLP gun you use the pressure and water remover and separator. Would make a great video.

Ever think of using one of those cheap easy set up canopies? I have trees overhead that drop crap down onto my projects and I've found that helps. Also nice if you can hang a tarp for the sides and make a bit of a tent, but then the air quality (mask needed) and wind sometimes comes into play. Probably not worth that kind of effort for one bug....thought you guys had more bugs than that in Ontario!

@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 5 лет назад
I thought about cherry for here, but I think the colour of that wood is better suited to a more traditional design, while maple lends itself more to a modern look. And then the size of the kitchen is also a factor - darker colours work better in larger spaces. Oh, and maple costs less, which was pretty important :)
