I know Comic Book Red Skull isn't a Super Soldier, but MCU Red Skull is, and what terrifies me more than anything is that like in the MCU, the first Super Soldier wouldn't be a Rogers, but a Schmidt.

Even in the comics (unless this is no longer canon) there was another recipient of the serum before Steve called Protocide (or something like that). So yeah, we'd be lucky if someone like Steve was the first super soldier. Most likely not...

Yeah most the so-called civilized countries with exception of North Korea would have regulations not to do this. But trust me if it's possible they're going to do it in our country. But you're right places that we don't want to have that technology would be the first ones to use it. But in reality we're so far away from something like Captain America I'd say probably 30 years at least. The muscle regeneration and mass is the easy part I know I'm a bodybuilder and a biochemist. I'm more muscular than Captain America ever was in the movies. And I know what goes into that. problem is you got it to be genetic rather than training or pharmacologically induced which is why you need the serum. The regenerating effects are something that we don't have anywhere near close to yet. But we've got guys in real life that look like professor hulk. I'm not even joking most people have never even seen people that look like this in real life but they do. I know I've been backstage with 300 lb guy at 5 ft 10 in at a bodybuilding show. He had 70 lb of muscle on me and I'm bigger than anybody I know. I would never want to look like that

I'm way stronger and faster than most and the only reason I'm not a complete lunatic is because I know what it's like to be the little guy because that's how I started out. People automatically assume I'm an a****** just because of the way I look there's most people that look like me are.

If we get the ability to make real-life super soldiers, the people we should be choosing people to become super soldiers should be people like Steve Rogers. People who have good Morals and stick to them, people who are willing to help others and not abuse their power. It is a shame that people like that aren't very common.

In a perfect world it would go that way but you know it will not work that way my friend. Almost to people I know that have any kind of real power are already corrupt. I'm not perfect by any means but I'm bigger and stronger and a way better fighter than almost anybody I've ever met. It's what I do for a living. And most time just being stronger and smarter does the trick without hurting anyone. I'm one of the few people I've met in my life that didn't turn into a bully when they got like this. Only reason I'm not that way is cuz I won't say I was as bad as Steve but I was 100 lb overweight little fat boy when I started. Now I got 80 lb of muscle on me compared to what I should have and to black belts. Yeah yeah I know I overcompensated lol I didn't like being picked on or anybody picking on somebody weaker than them. I absolutely hate bullies. And you know it will be the people that take advantage of this type of thing that should not be able to or even have the option. Hopefully there's somebody around like Rogers to tip the balance.

The terrifying thing is there will be a time where stuff that once was sci-fi or comics books is a reality. AI is real now and in much the same way we should be talking about it. I mean that's literally what age of ultron was about and no-one in the real world talks about it. Scary
@BJETNT
@BJETNT 3 года назад
We'll get AI before we get a super soldier. At least one that matches caps abilities. I pretty well know what's available and possible right at the moment and there's so many things you'd have to change genetically about somebody to get a person like cap. I mean we're talking hundreds of thousands of genetic changes. It wouldn't be just one thing like a lot of people think like I have an extra 80 lb of muscle on me most of the time compared to what I normally would if I didn't know what I do. And that's an unbelievable amount of upkeep. And I'm smarter than most but that's just cuz I studied lol. Messing with your base genetic code scares me. We could end up editing ourselves into oblivion.

Honestly, my big concern with all of this is classism. If people that can afford it can always be smarter and stronger, potentially even functionally immortal (Scott didn't really go into it but there's a possibility this technology can be used to make people that, after 30-40, don't age) then how can anyone not born into that class hope to compete?

You can download mazes into your brain?!? Also when you were talking about training, it reminded me of an episode of Heroes where a character who can fly is being persuaded to fight crime. But he's like 'how? I don't know how to fight or talk to criminals. I can just fly'. It's the same with strength, strength means nothing if you don't know how to use it. Maybe that's another reason the looming influx of real life super soldiers is so scary.

Don't worry we're still probably 30 years off from what they're talking about. I've kept up on all that science in the last 30 years. And you're so right. I know a lot of strong people that can't fight. I have two black belts and one of the reasons I'm such a good fighter is cuz I'm very strong. I'm a bodybuilder along with it and that has made the most success in my career. And I mean just being stronger and able to fight at the same time it allows me to do a lot of things that most people can't.I can overwhelm somebody and just hold them there where they can't do nothing rather than hurt them or if it comes down to it I can do that too. I locked into this guy one time that he looked like he was strong enough to tie me in a knot and I was 250 lb at 5'11. He was a big dude He look like the human version of a bear you know what I poked him in the eyes and that stopped him dead cold lol cheap move but hey it was better than getting turned into a pretzel.

Extremely Interesting and Amazing video!!! But another one of cap's powers that I believe others have mentioned is his slowed aging. Is this possible? I think this would be a great video topic. keep up the stellar work Scott!
@BJETNT
@BJETNT 3 года назад
It's a tricky slope even with what little I know. slowed aging is entirely possible but every time we try and compensate for certain things our body fights back. We're going to have to change aging at the genetic level. One of the main ways we evolve and compensate to our environment is We respond and upregulate our bodies according to the damage that we get to a certain extent. Now if you block that damage so you don't age you also damage the response to exercise and other stressors.We have internal antioxidants like SOD cytochrome c, catalase and glutathione.you can increase certain amounts of these to where it makes a difference but like if we increase or inject SOD and it only works injectable you cannot eat it or it just digests your body will down regulate its internal source.The only way that I seem to really affect this is plant-born antioxidants that are not endogenous to our bodies. But again if you overload them you blunt the response to exercise and other stressors.for example when we add these things into animals like dogs they live 25% longer. Answer your question yes we can but it's a delicate balance. to really be able to do it we were going to have to change things at the genetic level. Say for example dogs only live as long as they do because they burn so much hotter and do not have the internal antioxidants so the age. Well they don't have as much as us anyway. We have a lot more that's why we have a better lifespan. Our biggest track is to be able to replace cells longer. That way when they do get damaged we can replace them and keep going further than we would normally and we do have technology to do that to a certain extent now like epithalon. It increased lifespan and mice like 25% and in people it's probably more like 5 to 10 if you do it all the time. They're coming out with things now that you really got to know your stuff to navigate. I saw these products for a living and I'm better than anybody I've ever met that wasn't the people designing them. I'm even better than some of them as far as application but they're so much to know that you have to dedicate your life to it. The chronological age is how old we are according to the calendar biological age is how old we are inside. We can slow that down and prevent a lot of damage by our lifestyle.I feel sorry for a person getting into this though because there's so much misinformation out there it's unbelievable. And people tend to forget something major at least once every generation. I'm 45 and I remember things like the whole keto diet that is shown to actually have massive problems in the long run that nobody remembers from 20 years ago because there's a new generation and money can be made. Anyway take care of yourself and again knowledge is power it's the best way to protect yourself cuz nobody else will do it like you can

I should say, I have been writing a sci-fi book that heavily talks about genetic modification, and this video teached me a few things I had no idea about, loved the video so much, didn't even feel it was 22 minutes, I saw even the patreon credits and I'm not a patreon (yet). Keep the great work Scott. And thanks, to you and Professor Superheroscience (Professor E. Paul Zehr), for helping my book be even better.

Fantastic video, Scott. I'm so glad you went straight to Cap's intelligence after the obvious physical effects. It's so easy for comics and fans to forget just how smart the process made him. Those interview scenes were great, especially since he was able to explain all of the science in simplistic/easy to digest explanations. But the most important part of the video was definitely the last part and I can't agree more that this need to be discussed morally as well as scientifically. I honestly do think that human genetic enhancements are inevitable. Whether it ends up being something that totally reshapes society, military, or nothing but a fad that gets ignored for the most part, I don't know. And the question about the realtity of what happens AFTER a Cap America is made is as important as all the others involve in this subject.

This was a great video. I love being encouraged and challenged to think by comics! Man, the work you do on this channel. Awesome job! I fear we’re already far overdue for a “serious conversation” about genetic manipulation. Much like that conversation we had about the Internet, social media, and what that means for our privacy, or that conversation when we discussed the serious implications of leaded gasoline. Technology grows exponentially, but society doesn’t. As long as there’s money to be made, ethics, as you said, is going to be sidelined.

One of the things I enjoyed about the Captain America movie was his "I just figured that out" look. I think they were trying to convey to us how much was improvised on the fly. He learned by doing far faster than us, and that learning was more valuable, and it all "stuck".

About your 4th point, here's a quote I quite like: "You, are becoming Gods. There's a new master of creation, and it's you! Unraveled DNA, and at the same time you're cultivating bacteria strong enough to kill every living thing! Do you think you are ready for that much power? You lot? You lot? Cheeky bastards. You're running around science like kids with guns, creating a new world, while the world you've got is stinking, but, hands up, hands up anyone who thinks you've got it right. Yeah, there's always one. I can see you. If you want the position of God then take the responsibility." ~ Stephen Baxter - The Second Coming (TV Series)

Even if poeple do get these enhancements, we should at least make sure that it's the right poeple. Men and women who are just like cap and would use these abilities to help poeple and better life on earth rather than just use it for war and violence.

Yeah it should be that way but do you think it will? What if North Korea gets a hold of something like that? I guarantee you there's already places messing with human genome even if it's illegal it doesn't matter. I mean we're going to have to to be able to survive space travel anyway but in the next 5,200 years use kind of things are going to be reality. You might have to be a super soldier just to be able to survive what the plan is going to be like in the next hundred years.I'm going to enjoy my life while I can because we are heading for our own apocalypse. The planet will stabilize back eventually without us I hope.

I've been a fan of Cap since I was 8. I remember getting a VHS tape with the old 60's Marvel Super-Heroes serialized cartoon on it, was campy as hell but it's remained my bedrock for my love of Cap since it adapts a lot of his Tales Of Suspense WWII adventures pretty well

Looking into it and doing it obviously are two different things thank God. in order to get somebody like Cap you're going to have to change thousands of genes in the human body. Combinations of different changes will do different things. That's the reason we haven't done it yet is because there's a lot involved. they didn't have anywhere near the technology to do this kind of thing in the '40s we're just beginning to now.rather than a super soldier I would like to see them cure things like spina bifida and down syndrome. Not in vitro either but if a person already has them. I trained a 13-year-old girl a little while back that had the last 3 vertebrae in her columnnot form correctly. Parts of her legs were permanently paralyzed and there was nothing they could do. To see a beautiful little 13-year-old girl go through that was almost more than I could take. All she wanted to do was walk down the aisle without the Forrest Gump braces on her prom. She worked hard enough to where she was able to do that. I trained her for free for 2 years so she could have that experience and it was the most rewarding thing I've ever done. What really really bothered me was with everything I know and I studied I couldn't do anything but train her. I could only slightly help the problem and I mean maybe like 25% at the most. The day we can inject her with something and she regenerate and rebuild those in a couple of months to where she would life a normal life then I would say we made some progress. I would much rather cure suffering than have super soldiers. That's weird coming from me because I'm a bodybuilder that goes after physical perfection. But injury regeneration is something that plagues everybody if they get old enough. If I was able to start over in my education like at 15 years old again I would study my entire life to be able to help a girl like her. I wouldn't be as selfish as I was and reaching for physical perfection myself. I would have started helping people earlier.

There were multiple super soldiers in the 50s that followed the Cap's steps. The Patriot, Namor, Human Torch, Toro, Angel, Black Marvel, Golden Girl, Jack Frost, Whizzer, Union Jack, Falcon,Tommy Lightning, The Destroyer, Red Raven, Captain Daring, Dyna-Mite, Ghost Girl, Thunderfist, Spitfire, Captain Wings, Miss America, Thin Man, Blazing Skull, Blue Diamond, Aarkus The Vision, Blonde Phantom, The Thunderer, Challenger, Citizen V (both), The Fin. There were even Phantom Eagle, the OG Union Jack Montgomery Falsworth and even the Phantom Rider that predated him. Marvel superheroes go a long way back and most of them were either in the army or the public servants.
