Making Connectable Rain Barrels

This video is part 2 in the series. The first part was building the platform to lift the barrels off the ground and just underneath your gutters for maximum pressure. This video discusses how to setup the rain barrels so that you can interconnect as many barrels as you have room for. The two barrels on either end need a 2" 90-degree elbow to connect the barrels - while all others between need a 2" PVC T-connector. An air hole is also made in the barrels to alleviate air pressure while they are being filled from the bottom up.

We have 2 connected so far, and when they get full, there's a hose that waters the garden with the overflow. LOVE it :)

Your video gave me some good info on the project I'm working on. Thanks! I am using boat thru-hull connectors for the vents on top and constructing an automatic diverter out of PVC pipe. When the barrels fill, rainwater will flow into the drain lines to the street as normal. The barrels are in an elevated and enclosed box to provide pressure.

The system is very good. If you use rubber pipe sleeves instead of the connectors, you have a better fudge factor and a easier system to break down.

A few recommendations. PVC pipe primer for better joints and holding the assembly for 30 seconds to 1 minute to defending against joint push out.

Sounds like that should work fine. Just wonder if a 3/4" pipe is going to be enough to keep up with the flow from your gutter is all. Unless you mean you will be attaching multiple barrels together with the 3/4" pipe and you will have a larger pipe from the gutter back up to the top of one of the barrels.

Nice video and great instructions. What was the diameter on the 1 1/2 inch joining piece you used at 6:49 ?

Great video. I am building a similar 5 barrel system using 2 inch pvc. Quick question maybe you could help with... I will have a rain diverter on my gutter that will feed two 1 inch hoses into my first barrel. I was told I could have these feeder lines enter the barrel at any spot, preferably the near the bottom of the barrel (or even the 2 inch pvc if I could find a way to connect). I see you feed your barrel via the top so wanted to hear your opinion. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I think I could attach the lines via the 3/4 in thread in the bung, hopefully that would be water tight. I'd like to go through top of barrel. My gutter is about 17ft away so the line would basically making a U to the top of the barrel (down to ground from diverter, parallel to the ground 17ft, then straight up to top of barrel). Do you think this would work?

Would using ball valves between barrels be useful to shut off the water when adding new barrels and/or for maintenance?

Thanks alot for the video. I am leaning toward going the direction you lay out with 2" PVC but I notice that most of the other vids on RU-vid that show a manifold system like this tend to use 3/4 " PVP by going thru the middle of the bung and connecting all barrels with 3/4" piping. What are your thoughts on 3/4" vs. 2"? I am going to hook up 6 barrels on side of garage and want good flow. Does 2" give greater flow and pressure? Thanks!

Yep, you could have the water enter top, bottom, side, wherever. In my barrels, the water comes into the top of one barrel - which then equalizes out amongst the other 11 through the 2" PVC pipe at the bottom. Definitely have to be careful though because it makes more sense for the water to come in from the top than anywhere else. If you have any kind of hole below the top of the barrel that isn't covered or has a valve, water will come back out (gravity flow).

Thanks. What about if I intend to have groups of 2-3 barrels around the house with possibly 4 or 5 barrels in one area. Do you suggest the 2" PVC even for the smaller groupings with 2-3 barrels if is that overkill? I can see if I hooked up 10 barrels in one place, but I welcome your thoughts about this. Great stuff. Also, I would love to see how you flip the barrels over. Do you wait til everything is set up down below and then, last thing, connect via unions?

Where can I purchase the 2" coarse threaded PVC adapters. I need 6 of these.

Yes, the 2 inch pipe allows for better capacity and pressure. If you use the 3/4-inch pipe, the largest pipe you can use to go out would be 3/4-inch. The 2-inch pipe certainly is more expensive - but if you plan on having a couple of hookups to this (as I have), you can't force 1-inch of water out of a 3/4-inch pipe.

Well, that depends how close you will have the barrels. If right next to one another, measure the width of each barrel and then maybe add a few inches to it just to have some spare. Or to be absolutely safe, probably figure two feet of pipe per barrel.

@DeLudre That piece actually came with the barrels. There are two holes in the top of each barrel - and there should be male-threaded cover/stopper. So this was a piece that came with the barrel - and I simply ensured it was completely tight so water wouldn't get through it when turning the barrels upside down on the platform.

Brian, I am connecting 7 barrels just as you have in your videos. How much straight pipe would I need? Why u ask? Because I can get some free 2" pipe but I need to know how much to ask for.

i am working on the tank which i took off the water truck which is 7000 Gl and i put on the top of the cargo 20Ft StorageContainerch is about 150 ft away from my roof i was wondering if i take PVC pip down from my roof to the tank the top part of the tank is about 5 ft higher then my roof can i just connect to the lower drainage you think it will fill the tank

Where do you look for the blue plastic barrels? I can only find white car wash soap barrels.

Brian, how is this a pressurized system if you put air vents in the bottom(top) of the barrel. I would like to use this system chaining barrels together to pump water into my cabin. I currently only have gravity flow. Any suggestions. If I pump water from the barrels I will need to run some kind of air vent system which shuts the vent off when the barrels are full and not lose any water. Thanks. I enjoyed the video.
@chrisbaker528
@chrisbaker528 9 лет назад
I thought of a long 1/2 inch pvc vent pipe higher than the water source which is about 20 ft. above the cabin. This might work and allow air out but not water and still be able to pump water into the cabin without collapsing the water tanks.

Chris Baker This is all based on gravity flow - so there is no pressure in the system. That is why the barrels are elevated to up just under the gutters for the maximum amount of gravity flow that is possible.

bsntechdotcom Thanks Brian. Did your 2" male threaded fitting fit easily into the smaller threaded hole? I purchased a male fitting but it will not screw in.

Not fully sure unless you got some barrels that are not proper sizing. 2-inch PVC pipe and fine male-threaded connectors worked without an issue with the barrels I used.

One should dry fit the PVC pipes first.
@bsntechdotcom
@bsntechdotcom 12 лет назад
The connectors that you use is fully up to you. Since I have 12 barrels all connected together, the 2-inch pipe is what I used. Another thing that you have to consider is the amount of water flowing into the system. Since I only have one downspout going into one barrel - then all of the other barrels fill up, there needs to be a big pipe connecting all of them to manage that flow. You don't want to be hung up by the smaller piping and lose rainwater because of it.

at 3:50 ish you take an O ring off the cap that comes with the barrel to put onto a different cap. Ya lost me....
@bsntechdotcom
@bsntechdotcom 11 лет назад
Each barrel has two holes at the top. One of them has very fine threading and the other has coarse threading. Ensure that the one with the coarse threading is securely fastened in the barrel - and that an O-Ring is on there to prevent any leaks. Then, you will take the O-Ring from the fine-threaded plug and put it on the male-threaded PVC adapter - then put the male-threaded PVC adapter into the fine-threaded hole.

This is the best way using the top of the barrels. If you using a 55 gal sealed barrel.
