In this video, Chuck shows us how to create a beautiful pair of leather arm guards with a filigree cut design. A filigree cut is a design cut out of your leather for a see-through effect. You can layer your filigree on top of another color material to make your design stand out even more. The result is a piece that looks intricate, but is actually quite easy to achieve with simple cuts and punches. A filigree is an extremely versatile technique that you can use to create everything from simple accents to elaborate designs.

I don't think there's a better leather educator out there on RU-vid that can compare to Chuck's infectious love of leather crafting and love of teaching. He makes everything seem so doable and achievable. Top notch.

Chuck, Loved the longer video explaining the project from start to finish. This could easily have been a multi-video project stretched out over a number of weeks. Thank you for the tutorial. Again, I learned something new from you.

This is actually perfect for me as ive been designing a bag with a gusset made with a fabric layer sandwiched between an inner fabric liner and an outer leather filigree, but i wasnt quite sure how to visualize that while patterning. This really helped me sort out the last few details.

Thank you again for all your knowledge and sharing. I have a question about chrome tanned. I understand that it tends to corrode metal. My question is does it affect all metal including brass and aluminum. And if so how quickly. Will something like buckles not hold up. Or some metal decorations. Thank you again for everything
@Taurusus
@Taurusus 2 года назад
From what I've read, chrome-tan corrosion is a myth. Knives left in chrome-tan sheaths rust because moisture gets stuck in there. There's a tiny risk if the tanner is dodgy and doesn't process their leathers properly, but the chromium salts should be long gone by the time you're working with it.

Curious I don't remember seeing any steps of edge slicking in this whole video? Not needed since there weren't any edges exposed? The antiquing was put on the inside of the square cuts but no edge burnishing correct?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply Год назад
No slicking because the main body is backed with suede so we don’t round the edges (that would not create a good meet on the edges) and the inside cuts aren’t slicked because I didn’t bevel and it’s tough to get a slicker to cover those all the way to the inside corners.

Regarding the spots: Is there a reason you shouldn't/couldn't do it before gluing on the back? That way the tines are "hidden" between the 2 leathers?
@shootermks1
@shootermks1 2 года назад
I believe he doesn’t want to hide the tines in case of replacing or repairing a spot in the future.

Hi Chuck, just wanted to ask you a quick question about dip dying with Fiebing's Pro Dye. I bought myself a 4oz to play with for my vegtan and I've gotten really inconsistent results. The first thing I've tried is application with a sponge and that seemed to work well. Tried a dauber and it left my project streaky but fortunately I liked the look so it wasn't a failure but finally I've tried to dip dye a test piece and instead of giving me a nice medium shade of walnut brown, it's gone almost black and doesn't seem to lighten even after a few hours of drying. I'd like to dip dye future projects for consistent results but I feel like I'm just not doing something quite right. Do i need to dampen my vegtan before trying to dip dye or anything special like that?
@name_change_coming
@name_change_coming 2 года назад
When applying Pro Dye with a sponge or dauber, go back over it a couple of times. It will eliminate the streaks and give you even coverage without making the already well-dyed areas even darker. When you dip-dyed your leather, did you wipe down the leather to remove excess dye? I have never tried to dye pre-dampened leather, so I can't speak to the results of that, though the idea does intrigue me. I will have to try it and see what happens. The only other thing I can suggest is to buy a container of Fiebing's Deglazer and completely clean the leather you plan to dye. Deglazer will remove anything that is on the leather and take it back to its raw state. Just make sure you do it outside or in an extremely well-ventilated location. Good Luck!

This could be a couple of things. The quality of the leather first off but much thinner weights (1/2 & 2/3 oz.) tend to hold the dye so they can be much darker sometimes, but not always. If you want to go with a sponge you certainly can. I would say get some good dye in the sponge but not dripping wet and then apply the dye pretty quickly across the full panel getting as much coverage as you can, then come back with a second coat to fill in and maybe a third coat to finish it off. If this is done all at once (not waiting between coats) then it should wick across the panel consistently and look pretty good.

Thumbs up for pro tip at timestamp 35:53. The way my thread manages to get snagged on everything from my shirt buttons, the project itself and even the stitching pony, as you pointed out, is both uncanny and extremely annoying. It's the little tips and tricks that, in my opinion, separate the masters from the hobbyists.

Casing. Can you please explain why Chuck fully dip these and let them absorb the water for 8 hours between two sheets of plastic and then let air out for 15 minutes to half hour before he stamped. I'm a total beginner and most videos only case their leather by wetting it once or twice with a sponge and letting it get back to its original color before stamping. Would he do the same casing technique if he was carving as well or just for stamping only?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply Год назад
Try casing the leather. You’ll see an enormous difference when a piece is cased and stamped as opposed to a piece that is just wet and stamped. We have a video on doing this and I show two examples of the difference. Here is a link to the video... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3tf_mcvMLPw.html

I appreciate you showing us this, however, I think you made sooner odd colour choices. I don't think the lavender is the best colour for bracers, and I don't think the reddish brown matches the lavender colour. I think a brown brown, without the reddish tint would've matched much better. That's my opinion. I still appreciate you showing us how to make this, though, and it was a good video.

at 42 min, is there a reason why you wouldnt want to do this step before adding the suede? This way you're not having to see the grippers on the back side
@shootermks1
@shootermks1 2 года назад
It would be easier to replace a spot in the future.
@name_change_coming
@name_change_coming 2 года назад
Nope, no reason. I think what we saw was Chuck making a crafter's choice. Personally, I'm with you on layering the suede in after installing the spots but there is also the argument that the spots will help to hold the suede liner and leather shell together in the future rather than strictly relying on the contact cement he used.

Why does suede dull a knife blade?
@Lithiiel
@Lithiiel 2 года назад
I don't think it's the suede as much as the cutting board beneath it
@name_change_coming
@name_change_coming 2 года назад
I wish I could give a more professional, scientific answer, but it is essentially the same reason that the suede side (fuzzy side) of a piece of leather does such a fantastic job in sharpening and polishing a blade's edge. The same fine grit that can straighten metal at a molecular level and create a razor's edge, can also roll that edge and make it as dull as the back side of a spoon.

I suppose it would be bad form to die and turn the flesh side of leather outward if you don't have suede? That would probably look terrible?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply Год назад
No, actually that’s called a “rough-out” and it’s used in saddles all the time. It looks good!
@JnJShiffler

@@WeaverLeatherSupply The dyes often say not for suede, but are they ok for rough out sides? I suppose you should dip dye the whole piece if doing rough-out?
