What if you bring different tubes filled with different gases, and then approach a strong voltage (tesla coils) around them so that you can see the color that is being emitted (due to atom excitation) by each one, then maybe mix the different gases in one tube and see what color mix gets emitted?
Great video. I’d love to take your science class. I understand the mix that worked the best had the same ratio as water, but I don’t understand why it is relevant. I’m sure I’m missing something. Can you please explain that a little further?
Thank you! The Hydrogen and Oxygen react to produce water. So, the reaction should need twice as much (moles of) hydrogen as oxygen because water is H2O. Does that help?
I can help further! When you combine molecules to make something like water, energy is released because of the combination this energy causes the pippet to shoot across the room!
Because then all the atoms react. If you have too much Oxygen, some of that will not combust, if you have too much Hydrogen, some of that will not combust. If you have the right amount of H and O, all of those will combust to become water.

I really wanted to do that for this video, but I am pretty confident that my Whoosh (water) bottles are not pressure-rated high enough to actually launch...I am pretty sure they will explode! (Which I am totally OK with but I need to find a location that is safe enough and a remote detonator that can work for this application.) So...I guess I better start searching for a remote location and a remote detonator!

For those playing at home without access to the chemicals shown here, an HHO generator will provide you with the gas you need.. Plenty of videos out here showing how to build one too.. And when you're done playing with rockets, you can hook up the generator to your car's inlet manifold, and double, or perhaps even triple, your fuel mileage.. :D
i know yr jus teaching a class and jus showing what chemical reactions can do, but i'm sure yr all too aware, that couldn't you jus simply perform electrolysis which would give you by default the perfect ratio of oxygen and hydrogen already? and its non-toxic too, is that Browns gas is? i jus know this cuz i been experimenting trying to convert some my engines to burn hydrogen, i cant make an electrolysis device to produce enough hydrogen on demand, which was my goal, since that would solve many of the problems with hydrogen running cars; if you could store it as water and simply produce it only when needed by the engine, boom no dangerous hydrogen tanks, boom extended range by having it in a condensed and safe form, and boom produces just hydrogen and oxygen, so inject that into engine without the need for air intake and u get no production of those nasty nitrogen compounds. Storing hydrogen on the vehicle has many limitations, simply bringing the electrolysis device onboard the vehicle solves so many problems, i just cant design one with enough plate surface area. So far I've succeeded in simply having it supplemented with my air intake, and running my air fuel ratio much much leaner, I've gotten at one time 120 MPG! If you teach engineering too now THAT would be a game changing project,...but which would ultimately put your life in danger as so many have paid with there lives before us. Look up the Newman machine, or Huchison effect. They are real deal, no foolin

Wow. This just shows me what a shitty chem teacher I had in high school. All we ever did were these stupid worksheets with absolutely minimal instruction. He would occasionally do a "demonstration," but it was always something totally inane. We never once did a practical, hands-on experiment like this, and his attitude totally killed my interest in the subject.
Unfortunately I think several people have had the same experience as you in chemistry. I started making these videos so teachers would learn some good activities and demos and do them with their students. Hopefully they help!
Why don't they use hydrogen in jet engines. If you add cooled air wouldn't it have higher energy that. Fossil fuels and regular air. With way less volume.

In my school, in the chemistry class, there was only 1 chair per class, as all the rest lay broken in a big heap. When another chemistry teacher came, I learned valence and passed the task first. She said you cheated. After that I didn't study chemistry at all. Glad that at least someone has a good chemistry teacher.
Water is “stable” in its configuration so it doesn’t easily separate to form new things (this is what makes things explode). But, when the two gases (H2 and O2) are mixed and energy is added, they will collide and rearrange into water = BOOM!
Thanks! Water can be used as fuel but first it has to be broken into hydrogen and oxygen then allowed to recombine. The most common way of separating them is by using electricity- this is the basis of a device called a fuel cell.

Great video and great teacher. However, the explanation of ratios is incorrect and the gas mixture is not the same ratio H/O that is present in water. In the water molecule, there is only one Oxygen atom. In the gas it is O2. In terms of number of atoms, 4H = 2O2.
I wonder if the aplication could replqce traditional methods of firepower by replacing bulets with hydrogen bulets an alternative green source to bullets less polution?
you can just use a battery to make hydrogen and oxygen using electrolysis a lot easier and no acid needed- method Elon will be using on mars if he ever gets there! haha
Yes. Hydrogen vehicles do exist but the problem is that driving around with a tank of hydrogen is having a bomb on board. So it hasn’t really caught on die to safety reasons.
I am definitely no expert but I don’t see any reason why hydrogen vehicles couldn’t succeed. There are several hurdles including safe storage of hydrogen, the fast combustion rate of hydrogen in an engine and a supply network (there will need to be ample “gas” stations that have hydrogen to refuel).
I did a similar experiment in high school chemistry. We used a burette, and poured in a certain amount of HCl then filled the rest with diluted water. At the top, next to the stopper, we tied a piece of magnesium instead of zinc. Then, when you turn it upside down, placing it in a beaker of tap water and uncovering the hole in the stopper with your finger, then the HCl floats down, producing that cool swirling effect, and reacts with the magnesium, which releases hydrogen gas bubbles that float to the top and displace the HCl/water mixture out of the bottom. When it's over you have a burette partly full of pure H2 and diluted water, and some HCl since the magnesium is a limiting reactant. Was really cool, though not as cool as this!
This is a superb experiment/experience for students to learn about alternative fuels, stoichiometry, chemical energy to kinetic energy conversion, and a whole lot of other things which I haven’t time to type. I’m seriously considering using this (or a modified version) for the junior high schoolers who’ll be visiting my school in the coming month. Thanks so much for the share…..Now, with my mind racing, I wonder if the experiment can be done via electrolysis as well (time vs distance etc etc)

Thank you! Electrolysis is a better method for making the gases but the point of this one is to learn how to use chemical reactions to make products then to test molar ratios.
