Recently Makers Workshop got an upgrade, a Laguna EX 150 watt Laser Cutter. I wanted to take on a project that would really maximize this laser cutter's full potential, so I decided to tackle a laser cut furniture piece, specifically a walnut laser cut desk... and then my daughter asked if she could use my test cut of the desk pattern as her remote learning desk, so naturally I obliged and wound up taking one TWO laser cut desks. In addition to the laser cut parts these desks feature local live edge slabs that we dried ourselves, and Total Boat Resin Rivers down the middle.
I'm looking forward to making more laser cut furniture in the future. The Laguna EX 150 handled the 1/2 inch plywood like butter.
Enjoy the video,
Michael

OK, I gotta say I shed a tear when you hit the drawer faces with brad nailer. 😿

@MakersWorkshopLLC 3 года назад
It's the best way that I've found to do it for me. I try to hide the brads behind where the drawer pulls go and ill sometimes hit it with wood putty if I have a close enough color match and it feels necessary. I'm all ears if you have a better way though; I'm always down to try something new

My favorite projects are ones that harmoniously blend machine work, and the more typical woodworking. Just because some of it was done on a machine doesn’t mean that it can’t still be one of a kind and a piece of art. I didn’t set out to make two originally but I enjoyed that this gave the opportunity to show how with different desktops and materials, the same design can look and feel very different.

@@MakersWorkshopLLC I can’t agree more. Machines are part of the craft. Computer controlled machines just make everything easier and safer. But that final human touch is what makes every single item shine.

I have to ask, are you using the stock lens? how many passes and do you adjust the head height by pass? My experience with 1/2 birch is 1st pass only about 1/4” deep…2nd pass only 1/8” deeper and 3pass I see glowing embers in the canyon of the cut….Ive never been able to cut all the way thru. and that is at setting of 8 speed and 75%. End up finishing the cut with a band saw or scroll saw.

Thanks for the video! Would you recommend this laser to build cabinet doors? Or would I be better off with a 4x4 Cnc? The burning edges are concerning, especially when using mdf material.
@MakersWorkshopLLC
@MakersWorkshopLLC 2 года назад
For cabinet doors I would go with the CNC. Check out pcncinc.com they make great affordable industrial CNC machines. We have their 5x10 model and love it. They have smaller ones on the site and can add custom features depending on your particular needs.

Any issues with exposed laser cut plywood? Would veneer banding help cover plywood edges or is that overkill and not needed?

@MakersWorkshopLLC
@MakersWorkshopLLC 3 года назад
1/5”? I am assuming you are asking about the 1/2”? I used the stock 63.5mm ZnSe focal lense that came on our machine. The power settings that worked for me were power at 40% and speed of 5 for the 1/2” material.
@MrTei33
@MrTei33 3 года назад
@@MakersWorkshopLLC yes indeed, I mean 1/2 inch, wow there must be something wrong with my laser then, I use speed 0.5 inch p/ second and 90% power to cut the board that I tested on. Thank you very much for your reply.
@MakersWorkshopLLC
@MakersWorkshopLLC 3 года назад
@@MrTei33 I am going at 5mm per second which is .2 inches per second. I found that the speed impacted way more than the power did. If I pop the power up and double the speed it doesn’t cut through.

@@MrTei33 and at 40% mine is running at 25-28 MA the max MA on my machine is 32. Depending on what you are using for software that number is probably the better one to go off of for power.

What do you think about the speed of cutting is it worth it as compared to other methods
@MakersWorkshopLLC
@MakersWorkshopLLC 3 года назад
It’s certainly not lightening speed, but I’d say it’s faster than if I were doing this by hand and also adds in the perfect precision. Additionally it’s hands off time so while it’s running I can do other things as long as I’m keeping an eye on it. I hope that helps.
