I remember going to an old fashioned sugar shack like that when I was little. So interesting! The maple taffy was delicious!

Nice little system. We used the bag method hung on the tree in Minnesota.

Great video! The other day I watched a video about a Russian guy who settled in Northern Alberta, and he was making syrup from birch sap, which I understand is traditional in Russia and probably Scandinavia. He made an interesting observation: apparently the trees produce a lot more sap on windy days, and he was wondering if the trees used the swaying from the wind to pump up the sap from their roots. Have you noticed anything similar from maple trees?

Very interesting observation. I know sometimes sap will run more when there's a low pressure weather system in the area. Sometimes wind is a good indicator of changing weather and pressure systems, may have something to do with that as well. Worth investigating

Thanks for the beautiful video :) I've also heard (but not tried yet), that you can collect sap even just with cutting off a branch, so it's less damaging to the tree. Yet again, I guess that if you don't do it every year to the same trees, and if you plunge the wound afterward, it's also not that damaging.

What should I do if my unopened gallon of maple syrup is building pressure just sitting on the shelf?

I did not know you made maple syrup too! We are Kentucky Maple syrup makers, Central Appalachia has a long tradition of maple sugar making…met you in Pikeville and you helped us change our growing methods to be market gardeners! Boil on! #sugaringinthesouth

The Amish near me can the maple water that comes out of the tree and drink it in the heat of summer for an electrolyte boost. Of course, they cook it down to syrup as well. A little known fact is that the best maple syrup in the known universe comes from Ohio. Nothing else comes close.

Thank you so much for making this video. I watched it with my boys (8 & 4 years old) and they really enjoyed it! We are reading the book "Miracles on Maple Hill" by Virginia Sorensen and they talk all about the sugaring season. Your video really brought the sugaring process to life! Thank you.
