Making Miniature Road Signs with a Scroll Saw

I used my scroll saw to make some Miniature Road Signs that remind me of family vacation road trips and hometown landmarks. These would make a great gift for someone who has a favorite vacation spot, restaurant, landmark, or a company they retired from. Hang them on a wall or make a desktop stand for a nice conversation piece.

As a kid growing up in New Jersey, we would often drive down to Savannah GA to visit family. I always looked forward to these trips because we would alway stop at Shoney's for breakfast. They had mini blueberry muffins and at the time, it was the only place I ever saw them.

Mad ss skills. Great video. Yes, we played the game. The huge steer in front of the Sirloin Stockade was part of the landmark sign in my hometown of Wichita Falls Texas. In 1979 when the big twister came through and pulled the steer off of its foundation. As I understand it, they couldn't find it for about six months. Then a farmer up on the Red River called corporate headquarters and said he had found it half laying in the Red River on his property.

Thanks Paul! I was trying to come up with something to present at our Oct scroll saw club meeting. I was sitting in the drive thru at The Varsity and looked up and saw the sign and though 'I could cut that with a scroll saw.' Then I made all these and it was hit. Now I have a list for Part 2, with Hot Wheels. lol

My dad passed away when I was seven ( back in the 1950’s). A couple of years later, my mom married our stepdad. Afterwards, we moved a lot ! All across the nation. We played the “sign game” a lot back then. There were many cool signs back in the 50’s and early 60’s. You come up with some really great woodworking ideas, Steve ! The Varsity is great! Love their hot dogs ! Check out the “Moon Winks Lodge”, motel sign, which is a true landmark sign in our town, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. (Google it) I’ll have to do some if these signs. Thanks, Steve !!

These are a delight! Your scroll saw skills are on point, and there is something deeply, primally satisfying about watching you assemble the pieces after painting. My most beloved sign memories are Dick’s Drive-In in Seattle where I’m from (to this day my standard for the best fast food burger), and the now sadly defunct five story tall location of Pearl Paint that used to be a true beacon of art supply goodness on Canal Street in NYC where I’ve lived for the last twenty years. That sign was so iconic and visible that you could use it to help orient friends when giving them directions to any of the amazing places that sadly have all now disappeared from Canal Street.
@SteveCarmichael

Thank you Stella! I looked up those signs. Especially like the Dick's Drive In ones. Looks like there were several cool variations of it with arrows and different colors.

Not sure these can be sold due to the trademark/copyright. It takes so much time to make these, they would be real pricey.

When I was a kid my aunt said she made up a game for me when we would drive around. It was the letter game. I feel like I have been lied too!! Lmao.

Gotta give it to ya...this is one of the most interesting, generous, and fun channels I've seen on RU-vid. You seem like an awesome dude as well. And these signs kindle a satisfaction and attraction with designs, blocks, logos I've had since I was a kid....so cool! You definitely have a new subscriber!

Thank you very much! These were fun to make. It was a good challenge at practicing cutting such small pieces out.

@@SteveCarmichael Just a question. Did you tilt the table by a couple of degrees or cut at 90%. Also did the pieces get glued back in?

Nevermind. I just re watched the video and I see you did glue them and you did a flat table. I am going to try this but make super hero logos for my nephews for christmas. Thanks for the idea.

Great work & steady hands. I don't have that anymore. (Steady hands). We used to call out out of state license plates when we would be on road trips, but not the sign "game". Route 66 is a little over a mile away from me, and the biggest landmark here, @15 miles away, is the Gateway Arch. I plan to do a skyline soon with the arch.

@SteveCarmichael 3 года назад
Oh cool! Route 66 would be fun to do, but I've never been on it. I did go see the Gateway Arch once. I went to a park with an overlook across the river from it. It was next to a huge casino. Got a good selfie there. The skyline sounds cool.

Awesome video, pleasure to watch. Your explanations were great! My family always pointed out Walmart trucks when we were on road trips, whoever called out the most on the drive won

Thanks Tim! I'm discovering lots of variations on this game thru these comments. It's cool you passed it on to the grandkids. They can take a break from looking down at their phones. lol

Steve, Absolutely Amazing craftsmanship! Your precision makes them look great (and real)! I remember all but the Varsity and Big Chicken. Phillips 66 was a favorite of mine. Yea, the Holiday Inn was the place to stay back in the day, but not now. Yes we did the alphabet in the back of our Rambler Ambassador station wagon and our Chrysler that had the rear facing seats. We also did colors (who got the most of the basic the quickest), signs counting a certain type but most of all the license plates from different states. What about, “when I go to (someplace not important) I’ll take a” , then you have to come say all the previous items that people came up wit before you and then come up with something that starts with the next letter in the alphabet than the previous person. If you for got an item in order you were out. Fun game but we got in a lot of arguments - haha!

Hi Mac! Hope y'all are doing well. All is good here, starting to get colder here. I was hoping these signs would bring back some good memories for people. Sounds like it did for you. That last game you mentioned sounds interesting. Never heard of that one. My list of signs to do is growing, but I'm missing Phillips 66. Lots of people have suggested other oil/gas companies. I might have to do a Part 2 with more signs. lol Take care and Merry Christmas!

I think our generation was probably the last one to play that game. Kids today have their noses pressed into phones rather than glass, which is a shame really. Nice tedious work on the road signs. Really clean looking!

Hey Keith! Yeah, I was wondering about that. I got my kids to play it when they were younger, but that was before all the kids had phones. I wonder if there is an app for that game now. Hold on I'll search....well well, there is a Road Sign Bingo app. lol Who knew?
