Making Music with My Modular Synth Featuring J&OT Traffic - All about the Approach

Starting out in modular, you see wild patches where you have no idea what’s going on. You wonder how someone could understand anything underneath the spaghetti of cables and how this could possibly be a compelling way to make music. Spending way too much money to have too many knobs and blinking lights like you’re operating some important machinery that’s above your pay-grade or going to space seems a little extra. And that’s where the person making the music makes the decision. Pick the tools that resonate with you, I say! I feel like after wading into the world of modular, I can give my take on the patching process and what’s going through my mind in the overall experience. I’m no producer or professional musician, just got hooked on modular trying to get back into making music of any sort and am really enjoying sharing along the way.
In this video, I started out with the idea of doing a really constrained patch from scratch video but after some technical difficulties (recording time-outs and dead batteries) I decided to talk more about the mindset I have going into patching. It’s less about the technical, how to’s and more about some of the positive vibes I’ve found from allowing the process to be really low stress. There’s small things to think about like controlling your patch but it’s all a path leading to discovering and sculpting the music that comes out. Of course, not everyone is just doing modular for a hobby so that is a privilege for sure and die hard producers and musicians will definitely have to figure out what works for them. The other side of that is that you need to have modules to make the music but I’d say, build slowly, learn and tinker and then when you have more modules to work with it likely won’t be as overwhelming as if you start with a full case and a stack of cables.
I also spend a considerable amount of time patching with the Jasmine & Olive Trees Traffic which I just got. It’s basically a preset module and it’s super fun to mess with and like any great utility has opened up the opportunity for my other modules to work in wild new ways. So I guess that’s the part 2 of the video, how getting a new module (or in this case modules with the Acid Rain Technology Constellation) changes the way you patch. It’s like that discovery becomes localized to what’s new so you can uncover those gems that are just right at the panel and dig a little more to see what you can find.
I feel like I’m talking about this all like an adventure and in some ways it feels that way to me. If you’re on your own modular adventure, hope you’re having some wonderful and playable patches.
Thanks to the continual education and inspiration from Andrew Huang, Mylar Melodies, Red Means Recording, Div Kid, Molten Modular, Look Mum No Computer and Jamie Lidell for filling my head with so many sounds, ideas, and possibilities. I feel like they’ve equipped me for my quest or something.

You nailed it again. Great storytelling, equally nice video production. That jam #5 is a blast. Chit chats are cool by the way. I have no problem listening to more of what you think and how you feel about Eurorack in general as you have a nice way to express yourself and we relate to you. I can only think of Mylar who does also an extremely good job at telling stories, so that's a compliment! Thanks for inspiring me, us!

Thank you so so much for the encouragement and support! Well notes! Feel like my meandering ways will definitely come out more for chats. Also glad you liked jam 5! There were so many that came out while just making some patches. So much more discovering to do.

@@turbotambourine I'll be waiting for the next release! BTW i have a question about J&OT Traffic so... What happen with the 3 CV outs when the 3 gates are triggered at same time? which CV channel is selected? maybe a sum of the 3 CV channels? Im very interested. Thanks so much
@turbotambourine
@turbotambourine 4 месяца назад
@@pablobarria296 awesome! Should be this upcoming week. A couple more things to add yet. For the J&OT Traffic, it actually has a priority system. If two or three inputs ate triggered simultaneously, the left most input or column is the active one while the other two are off. I think that’s the yield the most predictable results for the cases like using it as presets for a module like BIA. If it used a sum value cv it would be a whole 4th timbre etc. there are probably some patches that would be cool for mind you but I think the priority system is a pretty smart way at it.

@@turbotambourine Cool, that's a clever design! I have BIA and i was about to sell it, because it such a pain sequence but this module makes all i want to jam easy with it, so definitely going to keep my BIA and buy J&OT Traffic. Thanks so much for your answer and for show us this module!

@@pablobarria296 you’re so welcome! They really are a wonderful match! Partly why Traffic has done so well I imagine! Hope it makes the sequencing on the BIA that much more fun. I like that you still have the ability to add some of the randomness by mixing the cv coming out of Traffic with attenuated lfos etc. Anyway, let me know how you like Traffic when you get it and I’m very happy to make these videos and that people get something out of them. Thanks for watching!

So good! I love that that’s your experience! The rush we normally place on things just seems to go away doesn’t it? For a while I would patch every night instead of looking at my phone. Gonna get back into that. It was really good for me mentally.

Great Video Visual Quality and Sound Quality are top tier I also agree with you on this .... I'm almost unable to leave my system patched overnight I always start a new patch 99.9% of the time Alright jams go in a sampler Great jams get recorded into a daw Though I record by layers, I never expect a single patch to be a song Though it has happened Modular is such an incredible music journey 7 years and every time I start a Patch it's like the first all over again The Traffic looks quite powerful I never have enough Utilities They make the system in my opinion Best of luck in your future and past endeavors You are doing great Pietro
