I cut mine into sections two inches long and then split the wood into pieces the size of wooden matches. One piece is plenty to get a campfire going. A half piece is really good for getting a fire going in my wood burning backpacking stove ( Solo Stove , lite ) One trip in the Okefenokee Swamp it was cold and rainy and normal wood would not burn. We located some large pieces of Fat wood and used them for a fire. The rain did not bother the flames at all and we managed to warm up.

To anyone who has never tried this stuff.. go buy a hatchet or saw and find some old pine stumps, or pine knots (where the branch connects to the tree) It will look amber and smell really good like pinesol or turpentine! The reason it's so fun playing with fatwood, is if you have ever tried starting a fire with a ferro rod in the wet forests of GEORGIA, you know it's a pain in the butt! Not with fatwood! Scrape the back of your knife on a little fatwood, and you can use a 1mm by 2 inches by 1/2 inch piece of fatwood to get a WHOLE fire going. insane! And fun :) No wonder forest fires rage so out of control, it's basically natures jetfuel!

That cookie is pretty! I might try and make a windchime or a window hanging from some of them. I also like that you did this with a Mora. No need for the hundred dollar knives you see touted on other channels. I keep a couple around, and my go to for a woods walk is my 6" carbon blade. I keep a standard carbon (4"?) on my tool belt.

Now that's some good fatwood, is it possible to get fatwood from any tree? Or is it only certain trees like coniferous/deciduous, softwoods/hardwoods, I'd like to show the grandchildren what to look for but I need to learn myself first, love your vids, only watched a few so far, very helpful, especially the fire rolls, I was amazed how easy you make it look 👍

Hello David, found your channel yesterday and been watching quite many of your videos! Last summer here in Finland I found two whole stumps over 1 meter tall full of fatwood in Lapland. They must have weighted about 40-60 kilograms since they were quite a job to fit in my truck. I have been using small sticks to lit my fireplace all winter so far and they are doing great job. I think I have almost a lifetime suply now since its so small pieces you need to lit a fireplace. Thank you for awesome content you are making!

I saw that you had a nice pile of fatwood tinder and when you went to light it with the Ferro rod, the pile got destroyed. Would it be better to pull the Ferro rod sharply back away from the pile? I do that whenever I am starting a fire, especially under a small teepee tinder bundle, and it all stays intact.

I think your using a morakniv from amazon. The cheaper model. If so its funny cause i spent all this money on these expensive outdoor knives( cold steel, moragarberg, benchmade, spyderco) And i use my 20$ usd, morakniv the most outdoors. Not only is it easy to sharpen but it hasnt broken and actually stays sharp for an entire weeks worth of heavy usage at the camp site. I mean ya i love my cold steel srk and compact too. But i end up always giving that one to my miss' and use the mora myself for most tasks.
