In this episode, Butch Walker and I dig through the creation of the Weezer song "Mexican Fender". Butch Produced and engineered it and brought me in for the final mix. We had a really fun day of talking about this song and Butch's journey from humble beginnings in Atlanta to being one of the most sought after and successful song writer-producers in the industry.

Thank you for doing this. You are my favorite mixer and Butch is my favorite producer. I just watched Warren Huarts interview with Butch yesterday, so this is right on cue! That song could have been a Butch solo song. It's got him all over the writing and production. Love your videos Eric. Thank you so so much

Hey Eric. Thank you for making these videos. No one else is putting out such quality material! Most of the audio-related content on RU-vid is brief, surface level stuff in comparison. It's hard to find stuff that is applicable to working professionals. Your videos are so incredibly thorough and I learn something from every one. Best of all, they are authentic and devoid of any shilling or alterior motives. Thank you!

I am 55 and have been a full time professional for over 32 years, and I have to say that I really enjoy the hang! This feels a lot like popping in to the neighboring room back in the days, and getting a super nerdy chat with the colleague sitting there. That's the part I really miss since we all dispersed into our private caves... Love that you are so meticulous no nonsense about getting things right...no cutting corners, just devoted to the craft and passion for music. Keep it up...greatly appreciated! Cheers from Copenhagen

Once again WOW! Goodbye Netflix. Such wonderful conversations with guys at the very top of their game with exactly zero ego. So refreshing, educational, inspiring and FREE, just like the best things in life. RU-vid comments are always a cesspool with the exception of the comments on these videos. They demonstrate how incredibly grateful everyone is. What a time we live in.

If I can make a suggestion.... I would truly love to see you in the moment mix a song, so as you’re coming across issues I can hear your thought process and how you come to these choices in the moment. I love these too but a “live” mix would be yet another way to pico your brain. Haha thanks so much for these videos. Every one that comes out I get so stoked to watch!

"Set to stun," a term which is taken from Star Trek TOS, means to use the minimum-strength setting, the more moderate setting, on a phaser (the ray gun used by Enterprise crew members). "Kill" was the extreme, maximum-strength setting.

As Butch mentions early in the video, some fans can be unkind when their favorite artist tries to follow their muse and ends up doing something that's really different from what the fans are used to. I hope those people see this video and gain a better appreciation of the hard work and detail that went into this song and album.

3rd watch for me. One of my favorites. Your boosting of eq freqs that are the fundamental sound of each instrument into distortion-Saturn, Devil Loc sounds so damn good. I car hear rock drums sounding more industrial and splayed as the high freqs get saturated, tons! Such a clean aggressive sound. Thanks dudes

Can I just say, this video (as well as being an awesome insight into a song I love), pretty much sums up my life: glued to a screen doing nerdy music stuff for hours on end, taking double or triple the time I told my wife it would take, while I ought to be participating in the nice relaxing family life on the other side of the door. "Barbecue? Nah, you go ahead, I need to deep-dive into VariMu compression and room mic panning. Save me a sausage."

Wrong. Bad Religion was the year after and Bad Brains was 11 years prior (as well as the year after). Their point still stands. His last work was Suicide and shit like that; not exactly what you'd associate Weezer with, haha.

great video in so many ways... only 70m in, but had to comment on that tip to overcompensate the track delay to then make space for a delay (lol) on the track you can slide around in real time while playing back without the glitchiness is choice, can't believe I didn't think of that. I use Ableton Live but it's the same there; must have something to do with how how the CPU calculates the buffer because yea it sounds like it needs to catch up or has to wait to incorporate the ms or sample delay you are sliding around trying to finesse.

Hi Eric. I just discovered your channel, and I really like the content you upload. I've been producing for a loooong time but I live in a tiny town in Sweden and networking here is impossible. When I say impossible, I really mean it. I'm basically the only one here with the level of knowledge that I have. I get complimented all the time for the quality mixes I make and productions I produce, but I've always had a really hard time finding the right people to work with due to my geographical position. TL;DR: Do you have any advice on how to go about finding professional opportunities?
