in all of my knowledge (haven't done this before): use steel wire(mild steel is a favorite for most), put it around a bar or stick with the desired diameter (6-8mm I believe is very common) wrap the steel wire around. With a pair of pliers, cut the wire in such manner, that the ends overlap a bit, so you can later place a rivet. with the two ends on top of each other, hammer it down till all is flat. (I think using a hammer and a steel bit between the hammer and the ring should do very well). Next drill a very tiny hole in the bit that is overlapping, then put in a tiny rivet and proceed as the video tells you ;)
Great video, I think you missed a tick on showing how you connect the next set of rings, to build the size of a sheet. But some realy good tips (such as the way of saving a ring when cutting, really asmart, spec if you get fancy rings lol, I'm going for some cheapo mass produced 10mm rings for my first attempt but I want to work my way up to flat 6mm rings form ironskin or capapie. as I hear the quality of the rings there is top notch Plus ironskin sends thier 6mm flat rings pre opened so thats a god send XD But they a bit spenny
The riveting plier that you used is bad I used 6 of them and everytime I use it, the beaks of the plier (the part where you put the rings and then rivit together and press them shut) always go out of orientation so that the little holes on both beaks no longer align and thus get bad rivits And I was working on a Roman steel mail shirt (4 in 1 with alternating solid rings) that weights around 3kg
Yeah, I now have a new one working way better. Whilst using the pliers in the video I never used the notches, I just used the hinging motion to lock the rivets
You have to look for a brand that sells both riveted rings as solid rings. I went with ulfberth as the quality is pretty solid and you can buy loose or solid rings by the kilo

Does anyone know a good guide to making the sleeves of a maille shirt? I am having lots of trouble with it. And how do you make a Change in direction of the maille, like if you want to make a sleeve around the ellbow, where just having the sleeve in a straight Tube will create tension while bending it. Thanks!
Teutonicpenguin did a good video on this exact subject, so check him out. I'd say for the arms, look at a video by modern history about fitting at an armourer. He uses plastertype stuff which makes tailoring very easy.
I believe so. only thing that needs to be done is to squeeze the rivet into shape. If it doesn't fit in the hole in the pliers, it'll probably still work just fine enough
In theory yes, it would be obvious to anyone who takes a close look that it isn't historically accurate, but it should be just as strong as riveted mail as far as functionality is concerned. It wouldn't be much stronger because riveted links don't often fail at the rivet.

I recommend sites like celticwebmerchant (if you're in Europe) else kultofathena. I wouldn't recommend buying it via Facebook because of a lot of fraud
@@treadnokash7598 you can however search for some of the indian manufacturers like deepeeka or windlass. They don't themselves sell (good) mail. But it'd get you a place to start searching
