Making SURFBOARD FINS from scratch!

Making resin panel surfboard fins using polyester resin and 32 layers of 6oz fiberglass cloth. I made two 9" fins and one 7.5" fin. This was my first time making fins so they didn't come out perfect and had some small air bubbles, but that's all part of the learning process. Hope it helps anyone else wanting to try it out.

Well done, I would recommend a full painters suit as well to keep the fibreglass shards off your skin; these can be very irritating for most people. I have foiled the fin before adding top coat and final wet sand.

Pro Tip: Shape the fins like a tuna. Plump in the center. ....tuna are fast. Hence your board will be fast with similar shaped fins. 🤙🌊🏄

Great video! Lovely fins. When using those slotted spring pins its best to force them into the hole rather than fix them with resin, let the spring function do the work and hold them in place.

How are you friend? I really enjoyed your video but if I can give you a tip, I'd advise you that next time you separate the resin plate from the glass, use an air compressor. Place the end of the hose between the glass and the resin plate and release the air. It will separate immediately. I'm saying this because same thing happened to me as it happened to you in the video (the glass broke) and it cut my hand. But I really enjoy the video, I follow your channel and I learn a lot with you!
@jim5549
@jim5549 Год назад
Nice! I've been wanting to give that a try too but haven't - no excuses! I wonder if laying down a layer of that thin plastic food wrap on your layup plate would work. It should sand right off but don't know how it would stand up to polyester resin. Anyway, as always very nice work! BTW when we designed parts using prepreg graphite epoxy we allowed .010" per ply. I don't recall what the weight of the fabric alone was but it seems like that factor is about right in this case too. We vacuum bagged everything so that might make some difference too. Thanks for sharing your fantastic skills!
@BendheimBoards

would a final hotcoat eliminate the sanding voids? The finished product looks like on the fin sides there are white marks from sanding
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards Год назад
That’s from air bubbles I didn’t get out during the layup. You could add a hotcoat but not necessary
@simonebelli9399
@simonebelli9399 11 месяцев назад
awesome!! i want to try, but i didn't get if you laid down all at once, or you did like sets of 4 sheets each time, waiting for them to dry and lay down the next 4 sheets until 32.

Excellent video on the construction of your fins. What resin are you using and did you use any thinning agents like alcohol?

Polyester laminating resin and a hot coat at the end to help with sanding. No alcohol used

Thanks for the video. Just made my mold for a fin. Used epoxy resin, hardener, Add F, tint, and 32 layers of cloth. After the last layer it started to smoke and i took it out of my garage and out in the shade. No other problem and looks good but any idea why it was starting to smoke? Maybe too small an area, I only made one fin in. Pieces of fiberglass were 10”x16”
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards Год назад
Could have been the resin overheating. Possibly if you did all layers at one time
@gregpines2113
@gregpines2113 Год назад
I did 4 layers at a time but only a few minutes between each set of 4. Total time took about 20 min. Did you wait much between your layers. Couldn’t tell on the video. Thanks for replying
@milospotuzak3251
@milospotuzak3251 Год назад
@@gregpines2113 Too much epoxy in the mold and probably too high room temperature...?? or maybe even too much of hardener led to isothermic epoxy reaction. I had no problemes making fibreglass panels of 36 or even 40 layers with epoxy anytime...
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards Год назад
@@gregpines2113 I did around 4 batches of 3 - 4 layers at a time then I'd let them dry and come back. Not to say that is the correct way, its just the way I did it.
