There we are. In this video I will show you how thalidomide can be made and a few interesting facts about its dark history. Do not try any of this yourself. It may be legal for me to make but laws vary based on your region. Thalidomide is a teratogenic compound so you should not touch it because you may end up transferring a small amount to a pregnant woman. This video is for educational purposes only. I do believe that Comirnaty will take the prize from Thalidomide for "Worst Drug ever" before long. The amount censorship of the harm it is causing is astounding but I believe it will happen in less time than it took for Thalidomide and the population anger will be significant to say the least.

Thalidomide is still used in the modern day to treat multiple myeloma and some autoimmune conditions. It's a useful medication so long as you aren't pregnant when you take it.

Actually the chemical isn't bad per se, certainly not the worst (cough cough nerve agents cough). It's just bad medicine regulations leading to a problem in a specific group of people. Currently used as a first line treatment for cancer in blood plasma

It is too easy to say "bad" regulations. Problem is, you can't test new medical agents on pregnant women during field trials... for obvious reasons! You would have to study ill effects of agents on unborn babies. This dilemma makes it very hard to almost impossible to prevent such problems. Still today most pregnant women shouldn't use medicine that has not been in use since before the Thalidomide scandal. Because afterwards people got extremely cautious and there is just very little new data gained. There literally is only accidental data when women take meds before knowing they were pregnant with an unplanned pregnancy. And this is not much and also not very reliable. Women stop taking meds when they plan to become pregnant, if they can.

I mean there are drug tests for pregnant woman.... Granted it is quite hard to do so, and for non life saving drugs they often times don't even bother since there is usually some tested alternative.

Hey the thiourea side reactions pic got me thinking. Since thiourea and ammonium thiocyanate tautomerize to each other at high temp, can we heat thiourea and alkyl amines to get N-alkyl thioureas? Off-gassing ammonia would be the driving force.

try with glutamine itself. only do the first stel and then a cyclisation. apparently much easier and higher purity

Oftentimes color in crystals like that are due to extremely trace impurities, especially if they cannot be removed after repeated recrystallization. In such cases, dissolving the compound and stirring it with charcoal, followed by filtering off the charcoal, can give good results.

Hmmm. This is not a very clean substance produced. In other write-ups I've seen the ring closure and the nitration done in a single step, creating a 2-step reaction. The result of those were Snow White crystals with the right melting point. Maybe you overshoot on the temp in the final step in your version?

i´m not saying that it would not work with a dean stark but it would work very poorly. when something works poorly you just employ a drying agent. Ac2O is cheap so why waste time to use a dean stark when you can use acetic anhydride? @@kpunkt98

I tried to investigate that topic a little further, but it seems, that there is no prevention for such a case in contag. affair. despite all regulations. there are of course comparisons with simular molecules. but effectively, the effects can not be studied on pregnant women. and also tests on children are considered not ethically. i highly doubt, that al aspects of sterioisomer chemistry would ever be investigated. so idoubt that the fda regs really works in such cases as i doubt they are made for safety reasons. its more about market dominance. thats what i suppose at least.

Finding documentation is mostly googling (though looking through older chemistry books may yield interesting processes that have never made it to the internet), but if you’re going to be doing any sort of chemistry at home it’s important to have a firm understanding of the actual relevant science involved - both for safety reasons as well as being able to troubleshoot and adapt on the fly when things inevitably don’t happen quite the way they’re supposed to.

Thalidomide doesn't just harm unborn babies, it commonly causes peripheral neuropathy in adults as well. Clearly they didn't properly safety test it before unleashing it on unsuspecting patients.
