While these are on the fancier side of just a chunk of wood, I feel as woodworkers we don’t take enough time to appreciate the random chunk of wood pressed into service as a “tool” . So here’s to all the cauls, spacers, wedges, shims, makeshift mallets and especially that perfect little scrap that quickly gets fashioned into whatever we need it to be. To those tools I raise a toast of thanks! And to all the rest of you Happy new year, may all your cuts be true!

Tool handles are round because they’re generally easier to make on one piece of machinery, namely a lathe, making them ergonomic but more importantly, cheap to make.

Hey man I have a lathe and honestly you either love it or you don’t. I just loved the idea of it and thought it would be my great passion. Turns out I love flat work. Something about hand planes and wispy curls that gets me. It is a useful tool though. I have used it a handful of times for projects. Live the video. You have inspired me to give my chisels a makeover.

Nick, you remind me so much of my grandfather, a master carpenter from the old days AND his name was Tom Sawyer..... no, I'm not making this up. At 6 years old I would sit in fascination at his knee while he hand carved a propeller out of wood using only a pocket knife. Thank you for your craftsmanship and for sharing your passion.

I make a lot of small stuff like right on this old drill press that modified to use as a laithe. Works great for making chisel handles and whatnot but you are right turning is the crack of ww. I just bought a small 24 inch wood laithe At an auction.

Great video, I think the ends just sanded would look good slightly pollowed perhaps. I like oil finish on tool haldles BLO or tung. I would recommend getting a lathe they are a great addition to a shop and a lot of fun!

Agree with the Tung Oil. (I'm a potter and mostly I make wood tools for that, so they need to be seriously waterproof, and not just on the surface. My personal mix is 1:1:3 Tung Oil, Marine Varnish:Turpentine. And I coat the entire thing with excess then wrap it in clingfilm for a couple of days, then repeat as it soaks in).

Oh yes, here we have come upon an amazing woodworker in his natural element, his garage shop. It's here where we witness him pushing himself to his limits and beyond to make memorable and inspiring works of art, most functional as well. Always a pleasure to watch your videos my friend. Keep doing what you want to do, and dont listen to the haters. Can't remember the tool company, but at least one out there makes or did make hexagonal or octagonal tool handles. They were considered the best tool handles ever made. Just a suggestion, but might want to get some gloves on and protect your money makers from the heat of the steam box.👍looking forward to seeing what you are cooking 😁

I used to have a large lathe and got a lot of pleasure in making bowls, platters etc. but how many bowls and platters does. Family and friends need? I progressed to segmented vessels but, again, a bowl is a bowl. In truth, turning bowls is pretty easy with minimal instruction. So for me, it was a easy decision to sell my big Jet lathe and buy a smaller one just for the occasional handles or finial to go on the furniture I make.

High-end billiard cues are made with a plane, not a lathe. Knowing that, I feel it's possible to make nearly everything without a lathe.

5:35 actually a lot of older chisel handles are hexagonal or octagonal with a flat side level with the cutting edge. It makes it a lot easier for when you pick up the tool again so that you won't need to find the cutting side again...plus the obvious benefit of not rolling off the bench

I'd love to see some candid interviews with your past high school teachers to get the dirt on just how much of a mischief maker you were 😹 When you mentioned "Lathe" I flashed back to this kid in France ? Olivier Gomis and a vid I watched from him a short while back , and he's got a Stratos XL which by the price tag is like a Rolls Royce of Lathes ! He's another of those crazy genius Artists ( like you ) and create's beautiful works of Art in Wood in a small shop like yours ( last build - Wormhole table ) / if your wife ever finds one of those lathes in your shop ? Definitely something to be said for hex or octagonal handles. Especially if it’s something you don’t want to rotate in your hand. That said, the first thing I turned on the lathe was a lathe tool handle lol. I actually just epoxied the business end of a bowl gouge into a new handle today. I guess if you don’t have a panto router, you couldn’t have used a plug cutter or something?

Definitely! Could also cut that shoulder on a router (sketchy), tablesaw (less sketchy, more setup), or chuck it up in a drill press. could also just saw the shoulder and shave off with a chisel or carving gouge. Woodworking. So many ways to do the same exact thing lol

Round tool handles? Hmm, I wonder how much of it is tradition going way back to when our tools were just tree branches. People might have shaped things they made to be what's familiar to them, then that becomes a standard practice which becomes a tradition which becomes unquestionable second-nature until someone decides to innovate and find a better way.

Sweet! No cutting board… superfluous flagrant use of a pantorouter. Very nice. I’m disappointed it didn’t take 6 months to make the handles. I betcha I could do that in 1 year. That accounts for trying to find the silly tiny planes. I already have a lathe tho…so maybe I don’t need the cute and tiny little planes. But they are cute. Oh…and on the tool chest…. First, Congratulations! Second, as to "round" tool handles. Look into "London Pattern" handles. They are octagonal, do not require a lathe, and fit your hand wonderfully. Take a look at nearly any Stanley screwdriver for a good example, even if those are in some sort of plastic. Keep up the great content, and let's skip 200K and start shooting for 1M. Just sayin'

But you need a lathe!! Once you lathe and see the unnecessary amount of waste you can make turning a toothpick from a lump of oak or walnut, you'll never go back. Mmmm lathes.
