so i thought it was a good idea to beef up a factory fiesta st rear gearbox / motor/ engine mount using a 2 part polyurethane mix. i used the mix to mould into the factory mounts voids in the rubber castings.

Theory is definitely sound, was a good watch and a good idea. There are different grades of polyurethane, which cure to different hardness/pliance. Another cheap way of doing this, with consistent results (but not as easy to get so neat and tidy) is to buy pre-mixed polyurethane sealant (Sikaflex etc) in caulking tube and squeeze it into the bush from a caulking gun.
@WhiskeyGulf71
@WhiskeyGulf71 4 года назад
There are different types of polyurethane, that one you have reminds me of the stuff you use to fill holes in concrete flooring. It'll cure very hard but you will still get a tiny bit of flex in the rubber so i don't think it will break up, have to wait n see.

My advice, clean it up and fill it with bodyseal. I do this when i buy a new mount to make it more stiff.

I had a split Bush once before and it failed on MOT. I was short of funds at the time and needed the car for work etc. I filled the whole bush with Black CT1 and passed the re-test 3 days later. Have a look into it #Spark Plug Steve . It's about a £10 a tube

Hi Steve. I did the same to my top engine mounts on a seat Leon cupra MK1. I did mine to 60a shore. Made the world of difference. I had already done the bottom engine mount with a poly bush but thought I'd try the top mounts myself saving £100s. If you want to know the stuff I used just reply to this . Happy to help.

I think what you ordered was casting PU its more like plastic. What you need in holding PU which is more like rubber and comes in different hardness. Shore 80A is a good place to be. Try something With high tear resistance and that should work a treat.

Hi Steve, you are too young to remember the Austin Maxi, but they had a rear trailing arm bush that failed the MOT every year, so I purchased a new pair and did this repair and it never failed again. Loving the videos

Steve. Not sure if you have a product called 3m window weld. But it is a polyurethane you but in a tube from our local parts store called Auto Zone for about $30 usd. I’m sure you can find it on the internet but it’s what we use around here. Also if you have or can find a cheap Torque solutions rear motor mount used and the bushes need replacing you can order the Whoosh motorsports replacement bushes for the Whoosh mount and they fit the exact same also cost $30 usd. Thought I’d lend some advice to ya. I’ve replaced the whoosh bushes into the torque solutions mount myself so I know 100% sure they fit. Good luck buddy. I love the videos.

might of been an idea to just fill the gaps with tigerseal as it stays pliable when set.

Revo makes a great mount, I’ve had it for a couple years now and it is barely noticeable. I then installed both upper mounts with Vibra-Technics and it smoothed out even more. Very surprising to have all 3 mounts upgraded and little to none vibration or harshness.

Not a failure, its a learning lesson. Lets see what happens to the bush in time and how it performs on the car. The process of casting the PU looked simple. Had a look on ebay and found what I think you used, in the description they do have a link to another set that does give a PU rubber mix, these look different bottles to what you used. Still a good video mate! Stay safe!

Steve an easier and cheaper way is to fully clean a std mount and fill the viods with tiger sealer which is a PU sealer once that sets voila a uprated mount 😁 Someone has already said it... Note to self read comments first🤔

Was going to say maybe a little less hardner and it would cure a bit slower and be less liable to crack but now I read you bought the wrong stuff. Well done for having a go anyway. I worked in a fibreglass factory and hardner quantity was the thing that we adjusted depending on the temperature you were working in. Not enough and it would never go off.....

good effort , and thanks for trying it for us all . shame it went so hard , otherwise it would have been alright . i think superflex had the best bushes in my experience , but the more you put on the harsher it becomes . the one lower arm rear bush is all you need usually .

@paulmurray2879

Does it say what the shore hardness is? Polyurethane comes in different grades from really soft and flimsy to super hard plastic like. The shore will either be a shore A or shore D and it’ll be a number then letter. Ie 65A or 80D. Look up shore hardnesses and you see what yours should be like and if it’s suitable for bushes.

Hi Steve, @Spark Plug Steve , thanks for your videos, they are really helpful. I've been driving my ST for 5 years now. No track days, just daily driving (spirited once in a while) with 68000km on the clock. Would you recommend changing the engine mounts?.. I can feel a little bit of vibration in the cabin but nothing unbearable. Also, i dont hear any weird noises (yet). Thanks in advance, CeeBee from Hong Kong.

I would have tried filling a 100mm section of pvc hose first clamping one end of it closed in a vice. Run a box knife along the hose after curing and see how pliable it is afterwards.

What shore (hardness) did you use? I made complete engine mounts on a car years ago and used stuff that was too hard, it could shake your fillings out 😂. Maybe try again with a digital scale and get a lower shore number.

Interesting little project Steve, I hope it stays intact. I don't know how it's supposed to set but maybe a cheap set of digital scales (less than a tenner)for any further attempts to make sure you get the exact mixture? And now on a lighter note Steve, when you sing the chorus line from the Ashford and Simpson song it is imperative, nay, it's the law that as a geezer you MUST replace the words "solid as a rock " to "solid as my cock "😁 Keep safe and keep tinkering buddy
