Thanks for the tips Ryan, I purchased a D4 with the 3lt a year ago, motor was rebuilt by Automotive Skills and seized up three months later. They rebuilt it again and now pissing oil leaks from the top LHS and RMS, having nothing but dramas. I'm only an amateur mechanic, but love the vehicle enough to just put up with the garbage. These tips help.

Great Video mete. As a new Discovery 3 owner. I have checked a lot of things. I know my oil pump got changed but will now check that it is the reinforced one. Will also clean the sensors and double check my crossover pipe which was also changed by last owner. I have a very slight coolant leak. I did see a video about the coolant release valve which I am yet to check. Thank you so much for what you do. It helps so much to have people like yourself making videos to help the rest of us who are still learning. I am in love with my Discovery. God Bless

Hi mate, new sub here. I have a 3.0lt D4 and just came across your channel, liked what I’ve seen. I was on a trip 2 weeks ago (800km) from home and that coolant crossover let go I just removed the coolant reservoir cap and topped up my coolant when the low coolant light came on for the trip home, I used 9lts of coolant. I’ve owned my D4 for 9months and it’s been an interesting learning curve. Thanks to channels like yours and the AULRO forum the answers are usually easy to find. 👍🇦🇺

Regarding changing engine oil and filter, it is so easy to get under a Discovery 3 or a Territory that there is no excuse to drain and change the oil yourself. The filter housing needs a 32 mm socket, and remove the filter housing and the filter carefully, but it is not a difficult job. The most important thing is to replace the O ring around the filter housing exactly the same as the old one. Check this over and over, otherwise you will get a leak. As for the oil itself, I do agree with you. I use a 5W-40 ACEA 3. As for the carbon inside the intake manifold, I squirted in degreaser through the same air pressure sensor hole you highlighted - with the engine running, squirting for a fraction of a second for many times, and without the engine running, about five times each time squirt for about three seconds and then restart each time. Watch the puffs of smoke out of the exhaust. I recommend doing this every month, and the engine runs better.

@@anels9 Sorry for the late reply. It would be better of you searched for "Land Rover TDV6 coolant crossover", and found one at the best price. I got one for around AUS$50. Some can be five times more, but would probably be exactly the same quality. They are almost all made from a plastic material, but aluminium ones are avaialble at a much greater cost.

My Advice use Good Quality Diesel Fuel ideally with a Fuel Additive to raise the cetane number and improve lubrication to pump & injectors. Change fuel filters early don't go to what the workshop manual says .........ideally every 25 - 30 k. Check the throttle flap - its made from plastic which gums up or swells and sticks ........causing fault codes and drop in performance. Clean it out and file a bit off its outer edge to prevent sticking.

Sorry only just seen this comment now The imjector fuel return line gets brittle and can eventually snap leaking diesel onto your exhaust. I'm pretty confident this is the main cause of all the discos you see burning down on the side of the freeway on Facebook

My new oil pump fomoco from british4wd leaked after i replaced it, 1st was the crank seal, buy the rubber generic "toyota" type not the genuine type, look for pics you will see the difference, 2nd the pump leaked from the hex plug where you check pump pressure i belive. This caused me a head ache and shoulf have come from factory sealed. (Leaked past threads once warm and pissed oil out quite heavy) check that before fitting the new pump guys. Peace
@richardwilliams8667
@richardwilliams8667 Год назад
You need the proper tools (or improvise similar) and follow the proper procedure to install the genuine seal which is a PTPE seal. Has to be installed completely dry and left 4 hours before starting. It is a very important process that ensures no leak. A generic seal will definitey give you trouble.

Great advice Ryan. When I bought my Discovery 3 TDV6 4 years ago this December my coolant level light came on so topped up about 500ml. Sure enough about 3 weeks later it came on again and more coolant was missing. So I changed the coolant crossover and it solved the issue immediately. You could actually see where it was leaking from. They have a seem where 2 halves of the crossover are joined and that seem breaks down over time. Really poor design I reckon. It bugs me why people don't love and cherish their Discovery 3's and don't just replace parts when they're worn or like you stress, incorporate preventative maintenance? I have since gone on to practically rebuild the vehicle due to parts looking tired over the last 4 years and now have a very nice reliable Discovery 3, or at least as reliable as you can make it 😂 Hope you're all settled in the new home now. Love watching your new uploads and admire your strength and determination when dealing with your Discovery 3. All the best for Christmas mate, take it easy and enjoy yourselves 😊👍

The supercharged 3l v6 in the D4 also has plastic cooling cross-over pipes that fail. There's aluminium replacement pipes available from the USA eg via Amazon. The revised plastic LR/Ford pipes aren't much better. The rear plastic heater manifold can also fail as can the original water pump. If you buy an SC replace the two plastic cross over pipes with Al and the water pump/heater manifold immediately. Otherwise the SC V6 is a great engine. Plastic pipes...why do it???

Great video man thanks for that. I only just bought an ‘05 model that needed a bit of work done. I’m definitely going to take your advice on these issues. The engine on mine has done 240k, when I got it I did all fluids, noticed that the diffs hadn’t been done in a long time, and I’m assuming the engine oil was the same. I did notice a little bit of shiny stuff in the filter, and it has me worried the engine is on the way out. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this? I was planning to keep my oil changes to every 5000kms. Just seeing if you have advice on whether I should cut my losses or whether it’s capable of being maintained? Also, do you have a recommendation on the best place to purchase parts in Australia?
@OUTBACKDiscovery
@OUTBACKDiscovery Год назад
Hey T W What colour was your metal in the engine oil ? Is its a real fine gold material I'd say it would more then likely be crankshaft bearings It's hard without seeing how much there was in your change as to the advice to give if its a smaller amount of glitter and no large contaminants you will probly be able to run the engine for a fair while just with regular oil changes Probly worth checking your oil pressure and end float if your worried about engine health due to the age of the engine but I wouldn't jump to any conclusions if it's only a small amount I use bearmach and advanced factors for my parts If you need parts the same day I run rovacraft as they are basically the only place that has a decent landrover parts stock in perth

It's a hard one every disco has different fuel usage numbers Have you got the 2.7ltr tdv6 aswell? I haven't heard of the hike it before is it a power chip or a throttle controller Both would effect fuel economy the throttle controller when adjusted to high makes your throttle way more aggressive meaning you would use more fuel when driving locally Most people don't notice a difference in down low torque unless the map sensor is super clogged up, so you doing it all the time is a good thing but yeah problem won't notice to much difference
