I just blew one of these Makita compressors up by trying to run a 1/2 inch impact wrench for about 40 minutes. This was about half-on half-off usage, but the mac failed me. Started humming and felt like it was seized up. Going to try to replace the capacitors and then use if for just nail guns and airing tires or something. Can you give me any pointers for the replacement job?

@popsynthyarby5055 I have been building all types of jet engines for almost 50yrs. now and I have to tell you to just take your methodical time dis-assembling and re-assembling this compressor as to not hurry the task and screw up something. Starts out seeming like A,B,C, then patience gets tested. Just work on a bench level and everything will go well. I need to do the exact task again now. I'll Marketplace mine afterwards, this time. No space nor need now. The unit will work like new after the start and run capacitors are changed out, but the 25% duty cycle will have to be strictly respected, or you'll be in the free-time business of MAC5200 capacitor change-out. Good luck. Lemme know how it goes for ya.

On mine the engine shroud was rubbing against the air inlet pipe(from the air cleaner) after a short period....there is no way of adjusting it so it doesn't rub....you have to make the hole bigger around so it clear's better ! The oil supplied is ISO 68 which is SAE 20W....if used in cold weather ISO 32 which is SAE 10W should be used. Other than that....I love this thing ! very good for the garage, the first job I used it for ( after 30 minutes break in) was inflating 22 big truck tires 24/11.5 size with no problem at all !

These capacitors should not just go bad. Something more sinister is at play. In induction motors, the start capacitor is literally behind a centrifugal switch that is closed unless the motor is running. So extended run times really have no bearing on the life of a start capacitor. What normal kills these capacitors is large voltage drops (long extension cords or bad wiring), or large voltage spikes (lightning or other power surges, etc). Well and I guess heat... Since they are mounted on top of the motor, if the temperature was continually above 200 degrees F, then that would eventually fry them too.

Yep! Was sharing a branch off 240v with heat pump to shop in frigid temps. Roasted the '91 compressor in the HVAC as well on rusted front end Caddy camber bolts. Have a new heat pump and dedicated line to shop now. Hard headed Scot/German. Thanks for the input.

I just pulled one of these bad boys out of the trash at my local lumber yard. Kept tripping the breaker when I tried it out. Motor couldn't get going but after quickly turning it on and off a bunch of times and adding some oil it filled up fast. But then same problem with the pressure up. So I'm guessing it's the start capacitor. Long winded question could you give me the specs of the cap's? Thanks! Also apparently the owners manual says I extension chords. Probably for the reason you stated.
@TheChristIsKing
@TheChristIsKing 2 года назад
@@wheeltwavel I don't know the specs. But I do know if you use too long of extension cord it won't do anything. You'll turn it on but it will make no noise or even hum, just nothing. Removed the extension cord and it went right back to working..

You mention the noise a couple of times. On mine (same compressor), I discovered the black plastic shroud was vibrating like crazy against the air filter. When I grab it and hold it still, the noise drops considerably. So I hacked the plastic back a bit from around the filter and also shoved a small wooden wedge between the shroud and the motor to hold it still. It's not just quieter, but also a different tone which is much more gentle on the ears. Now I want to rig up a more permanent way to stop that vibrating.

I've got a Speedaire horizontal with a rotted 30 gallon tank. The cost of the tank alone with the flat mount is over $500. So do I get this awesome A/C going again or spend the $500 on a cheap Chinese air compressor? What would you suggest.

@@Bro_DoItYourself No it's a Dayton 3 horse. This has the three cylinder two-stage pump.

@bltoth1955 Ya know. I've got a single car detached garage and 70+ gal of volume and a 2 cylinder pump, (I made a RU-vid vid of that setup), in the floored rafter of that garage. That Speedaire pump and motor are up there. I need to 'Marketplace' mine, as well.

Can this compressor comfortably run an impact wrench? I noticed you have a snap-on impact. What does your impact wrench require? My main impact requires 6.5 and I'm looking for a new compressor. Just wondering if this a good buy. My current compressor can't run my impact nor my air hammer for more than 2 seconds before the pressure drops too much. Thanks for the video.

Sounds like you just need to add a 20 gallon tank to your existing compressor. This Makita compressor is really ideal for a nail gun application. It has the required cfm for shop air tools but the capacitors cannot handle the duty cycle for extended use. (i.e. little puffs oppose to continuous use.) See my video where I installed a compressor in the garage attic. You can configure for shop use with one tank, smaller motor and pump that would be inexpensive but capable for hobbie use. Hope this helps.

Will you post a link for where you got the capacitors? I have the same compressor and it has stopped working. Thanks.

Thank you for the video, I have this compressor and it keeps shutting off, any help would be awesome. I replaced the oil, it runs fine at home, but I take it to jobs and it pops every time!

7 hours on and the motor is still alright thats not bad for the abuse, you think that oilless compressor would've handled that abuse?

have you tried to parallel multiple less expensive smaller oil lubricated compressors to provide the volume you need. connect them with lead-in hoses. you must run them from separate breakers with heavy gauge extension cords tho. duty cycle will not be a problem. i have four Campbell Hausfeld 4gal DC040000. got them for $85/ea. aggregate CFM will be 3.7x4=14.8cfm. i think it will be sufficient with just two for your setup. :)

Start capacitors from Parts Warehouse. Run capacitors from Makita, Taiwan.

Sir I just ordered a new MAC5200. Should I reach out and order the start and run capacitors ? - I watched the whole video. And heard you mention it should be good to go. I have a hitachi 10 gallon reserve tank that will be used in concert. Mainly for framing and roofing etc. I appreciate your knowledge. God bless.

Yes. Purchase the capacitors as a back-up. Be forewarned: The capacitors involve mechanics experience to change.

Ted, I can shoot u the #'s later but they may be on the parts list provided from the vendor with directions and schematics. Parts warehouse, and Makita online is where I got mine. May want to get 2 of each. Backups.

I came across your channel and you said very knowledgeable and educated and would like to know if there is a compressor that is portable that you can recommend I am looking to run mostly finish nailers Roofing nailers and framing nailers I've never used compressors before but it is something I'm going to need I was looking at this Makita 5200 and the oilless dewalt d55146

This unit serves me well but the cycle time needs to be adhered to. I've switched from a satilite 10gal. Home Depot-Husky tank to a 7gal. Harbor Freight aluminium tank as I've blown the capacitors again w/ scalers, air hammer, impact changing out the front end components on my car. I keep blowing out the capacitors because of the addes volume. This unit is made spacifically for your applications with nailers, in particular, not garage work aside a plazma or MIG application. I would choose this unit or yhe DeWalt or Milwaukee or Rigid ... any top brand. On the other hand .... there are a vast array of decent pancake compressors out there, as well but I woild stick to a name brand unit if you are making a living using them. Hope this helps.
