I agree with your rant. People mainly watch these vids, to see the differences, not the ways things are the same. I also agree with you on the tool tested should have the max battery that is for sale in the test. Good video overall, and its amazing how battery techs now make tools, virtually same as mains powered, or petrol powered tools. 18v is good enough for most people, but its amazing how the 18v in these vids, look very weak compared to the new 40v range. Like i said, 18v is good enough for most people, no matter what they are doing. But its nice to see your vids, to see the differences in performance, and like i said, i agree with your rant. Most people watch these vids, to see the differences, not the way the tools are the same.

Getting closer and closer here in NA. The grinder is still the only compelling thing, thus far, but eventually the dual battery stuff will likely push me over the edge. The catch is that anything I’d want with either a single 36v battery or doubled up to make 72v = uses up batteries quick. Grinders, recip saws (use them for clearing up shrubs and branches for hours), blowers.... If the fall beats out the snow, I go through 12 batteries, easy. blowing the parking lot, sidewalks and entryways.

I remember seeing a test on the Milwaukee Sawzall using the big high discharge batteries, 8 Ah and 12 Ah, and it greatly increased the cycle rate under load. But, it made it too fast, the same sawzall cut faster with the weaker batteries! Seams like you had something similar going on.

truthfully, the lxt 18v brushless tools do absolutely everything you could possibly want a battery tool to do. Until we get some new battery tech that makes batteries much lighter and more power dense (solid state batteries), there is really no point in transitioning to a 40v system that is still based on li-ion tech that will be outdated in a few years. Just my opinion. My LXT tools run literally all day and have plenty of power. When was the last time you grabbed your LXT drill and thought, "man this thing sucks I wish I had a 40v battery". It's never happened to me.

Yes, I agree with this view. I also just bought the latest 18v electric wrench TDT172. I don't think the 40v capacity, volume and weight have been improved much, and the battery technology has only increased the voltage.

Idk who's a plumber but with a lenox blade I cut 4" cast iron all day and sch40 steel with my 18v lxt brushless sawzall (I have every power tool in the lxt platform you'd need for plumbing) and I love it. These high torques readings are they not somewhat screwed by the vibrator function when it comes to drills. Im asking since I remember when I looked into drills...I usually saw a way higher maxtorque rating on combi drills than I did at plain drills with no vibrator build-in and combi drills that were quite abig smaller than other plain drills, while still having a higher torque rating even though the clearly was less potent. and was left with the feeling that the hammer effect played a role when taking torque measurements. and here in regards to english term' we call it a "drill with a vibrator-function" and we save the "hammer"- label for the rotary hammer drills SDS /SDS+ though in old danish "it is called a "slag-boresmaskine" that according to Google translates to a "blow-drill" or "blow-machine"

@@BuildsStuff Watched it. Weird. That goes against all my experiences with both cell types and it goes against what the manufacturer specs say. I have personally seen bow much more balls a 21700 pack has compared to 18650. I think it must be a battery management thing. There's something fishy here. Plus going from the 5AH 18v to the 2.5AH 40v, you are gaining nothing. The two batteries are functionally identical apart from series vs parallel. The total wattage they can put out is identical. This is also my biggest issue with Hikoki's Multivolt platform. Doubling the voltage doesn't increase power if you halve the current capacity. The exact same power would be available at 18v if they allowed it, but that wouldn't be good for sales. The reality is that 21700 cells have more capacity, higher continuous current and they have lower internal resistance. I can hear and feel the difference on my tools between the two cell types. But mine aren't Makita. Another thing, at the power that these big boy tools are drawing, they aren't just maxing out what the 2.5AH pack should be able to handle, they are far exceeding it, whereas on the 4AH it's not doing this. Long term this means one of those packs isn't going to last. All the manufacturers are pushing these cells far beyond their continuous current ratings. I don't know how they get away with it. By my calculations, that 2.5AH pack shouldn't be running over 900W but Makita says 1150W. The 4AH one should be 1260, not the over 1500 they say. But if you're going to draw 40A from one of these packs, clearly one rated for 35A is a better choice than one rated for 25A. Just because you can pull several hundred amps from an 18650 in practice, doesn't mean you should. Companies are playing with fire here, and if it all goes wrong, the liability won't be on the cell manufacturers.
@Patrick-857
@Patrick-857 3 года назад
@@BuildsStuffBut I take what I originally said back. 2 18v packs should handle 50A or more, so at least in theory should outperform the 4AH 40v.

@BuildsStuff
@BuildsStuff 2 года назад
I can't make that decision for you. But more and more Makita will move towards 40v. At present the tools are basically 18v tools with 36v motors in them. But eventually they will be 36v tools that are downgraded 18v or skipped from 18v as they don't have the power, such as the 10 1/4" rear handle circ saw. As time progresses you will likely want to change over, but if you have heaps of 18v gear, you could wait until you see a sweet deal, black Friday etc, before changing over. And of course you can run both like I do. Eventually I will be all 40v... once they have upgraded their entire line-up... which is going to take years.

@ThaddeusVilain
@ThaddeusVilain 2 года назад
@@permagnusandersson6052 The same "Piece of plastic" that has 230V running through it? Quite easily I would hope. Admittedly I asked myself that before realising that corded power is much more than 40V. One would think that it's not that difficult to manipulate the 230V-240V(In NZ) or 110V, etc. to charge the larger battery. I'd assume the worst it would do is charge the batteries slower than the XGT charger.
@permagnusandersson6052
@permagnusandersson6052 2 года назад
@@ThaddeusVilain it is simple. A charger for lithium batteries always needs a certain end-voltage. The charger for the 18V will top out at aprox 21v. No doubt it is obvious, that 21v is not equal to 42v - and there's your problem. It is not the "power" that is too little, but the voltage. If you wanna know more about that, just google how a lithium battery of any kind needs to be charged. The adapter piece would have to have a step up converter (to boost the voltage (which brings even more heat losses)) The 40v battery would charge way slower, because not only has the 18v charger less voltage but also less amps and that gets even more problematic when you double the voltage as in that case the amps would halve. It would probably take 3-4 times longer to charge the same 40v pack on a 18v adapter charger than on the dedicated 40v one. You see, albeit not really "impossible" to diy an adapter, it certainly is not feasible. Plus the 40v charger costs a mere 100 bucks so I don't see what the big deal is anyway.

I don't know if it has ever been mentioned, but the impact drivers sold in Japan have a different chuck than the US sold models. The bits, driver or drill, commonly sold in Japan won't be properly held in the US sold driver, they don't lock. I assume it could be the same way with US bits attempting to be used in Japan sold impact drivers. The problem is the anvil part that the bits slip into, which can be changed out to hold the bits sold in respective countries. I wonder which anvil is used on models sold in new Zealand and Australia? Different spec bits in different countries, who would have thought?
@BuildsStuff
@BuildsStuff 2 года назад
It's just Japan that is different. But I have 5 Japan drivers and I don't mind the bit fitment. They just slide back and forth a little bit more than regular impact drivers.
@f9qo
@f9qo 2 года назад
I had a driver sent over to me in Japan from the states, and the fact that the bits didn't hold really had me confused. I thought they somehow messed up making the thing, so I called up a Makita office in my local, but in retrospect they didn't know anything about the anvils being different. I had to take it to a dealer who turned it over to Makita that sent it to a service center. It came back with the right anvil for my location, but of course no warranty would apply as nothing was made wrong. They informed that the US chuck doesn't hold Japanese bits. They charged me about $3700 yen ($35US) to get the right anvil assembled. Whatever....at least now I can turn the tool upside down and the drill bit doesn't fall out. I know of two other guys that ran into the same thing over here.

Why would you get an American Makita impact driver if you're in Japan?
@f9qo
@f9qo 2 года назад
I wanted to purchase the set that sold the 40V driver with a hammer drill plus two batteries and the charger, and I couldn't find that being sold here. Another factor would have been the cost as well, the fact that I would end up paying almost as much for just the driver, one battery, and charger in Japan, as the whole set from the USA. I had to add for the shipping, but still well worth my while. Apparently a word came back from the Makita guy that the shop gave my driver to when he saw the price I paid as he also wanted a copy of the receipt. He told them at the shop that he couldn't believe how cheap that set was when purchased from the states. I suppose it could be a volume thing, but generally in Japan when you purchase goods like that, there are guys in the middle pushing papers that also get a cut of the action, and the price goes up with the more elaborate distribution system.....unfortunately.

Ok, battery time rant time. I'm tired of people not understanding this. The 4AH "40v" (36v nominal) battery has *twice* the capacity of the 4AH 18v battery. Ohms law is taught to high schoolers and it's one of the most basic and well known equations. There is no excuse for this ignorance. Battery companies are partly to blame though, for sticking to the ridiculous convention of amp hours, which makes it very difficult to get an apples to apples comparison as soon as different voltage is added to the mix. We have a perfectly good measurement of work over time that can show you capacity regardless of voltage, it's called watt hours. It's a great measurement, because watts are an actual measurement of work, whereas amps tells you next to nothing unless you consider voltage as well. This is unnecessarily convoluted. Watts = volts x amps. Why not use watts instead, and then you don't need to do math every time you want to compare battery capacity between different platforms? Oh and another thing, I'm sick of cordless tool companies not telling us what the current draw or wattage of their tool is (apart from Dewalt, but only on certain tools when they want bragging rights, and I highly doubt those numbers are accurate). Just another thing to keep us guessing when making our choices. It's high time the cordless tool market started adopting standards, just like the consumer electronics market has, the car market and basically everything else. It's time we had a battery standard. Edit, I do understand that this guy knows this about batteries. This is directed elsewhere, and I have yet to find any other channel that knows this basic fact.
