with all honesty, i, ONE HUNDERD PERCENT would have fallen for this trap.. i usually don't ask many questions when friends\family ask for favors (mainly because i asked for many myself and rarely was i ever asked why), so if it were me i would have definitely had them over... it's horrifying to me that i could be scammed like this by a friend \EX- friend\family etc. and have my life turned upside down because of a gesture of good will.

Honestly. I like to picture myself as one to reside in the Luxury Class car of The Petty Train. So I would have changed nothing except for the very last interaction with Dave. Especially if OP prides herself on the kindness she has for others. (Which is great, that's something in a personality that SHOULD be prized.) Instead of it being just the text, I would've sent the same exact message (with a post script to explain the gift that came with the letter, of course) in a beautifully handwritten letter in flowery cursive, wax seal and all the trimmings, attached to a package that contained the biggest restaurant style pot you could find so they could boil however much water they could possibly want for whatever necessity the hot water was needed for. I can't think of a single thing that you would need within "a few days" that you couldn't make do with something like that to supplant the "broken water heater". Don't try to play me, sweetheart, play the lottery. You'll have a better chance at winning.

I moved in a new house last year with my mom dad and older brother but right before we moved in we learned the water tank had live (and dead) spiders in it it only took about two days for someone to come look at it and another day to be cleaned but those were the best days of my life as I stayed with my grandparents :)

I had a broken water heater for 2 weeks because they had to tear up our house and it really can get bad and our house is still torn up and it's been months but it's gonna take tons of money to repair our home. This man is really disgusting. I still do feel bad that he chose to go down this path and the fact that he had much potential in life and as I am still a kid I have time to prevent this. This is a message to everybody. Please do not take advantage of people and realize what you do wrong and instead of getting angry because you got called out, try to fix it and stop spreading a bad influence. You put your kids in a terrible situation without thinking! Please come to your senses and realize you are in fact a father causing drama that you shouldn't be causing. If anything your the bad influence for being a terrible person and putting people under the influence of being rude. You ruined so many people's day. I've been in a situation with a broken water heater. Let me tell you it's not that bad. Sure cold water is not ideal (even though it's apparently healthier) but if you need hot water for dishes there's something called a pot and a stove. Also bruh I've known families who've had 7 kids at different stages of life (about to leave the nest to 5 years of age) live in a 3 bedroom apartment (welcome to Mormons) and they all had plenty of space in their relatively small apartment. Leases aren't bad. It's just a contract of you pay on time and don't destroy the place and I the owner make sure everything works including a water heater. Plus some apartments in the suburbs have plenty of space where kids could run and get their energy out. I've lived in apartments for over 15 years. Trust me they are awesome and in my opinion a lot better for families with small children. So Dave is just some entitled brat in a 40 yr olds body.

The blessing in disguise about this whole situation is that he thow away there friendship years ago cuz if he did not do that op likely would have said yes to his request without even a second thought. We don’t minds helping anyone, but if we thank something feel hinky, we step back to get more information. A bad water heater doesn’t take a “few days” to get fixed. I’ve had hot water heaters go out before, so I simply buy another one and install it, if not that day, then the next day. I’m a landlord and if a water heater goes out of any of my rentals, I call our plumber and it’s taken care of within 2 days maximum. I have had to put my tenants up in a hotel room for a night, but that’s just business. There’s No Way I’ll allow anyone (other than family members who I trust) to move into our house for more than a week. And they’ll have to buy or help with the groceries. Years ago the town we lived in had a Big flood. Some close friends of ours were flooded out. They stayed with us as our house was on higher ground. They lived with us for a little over 6months. No we didn’t charge them rent, as their insurance company didn’t pay enough to replace all their furniture, bedding, clothes, etc. They did pat their share of groceries and utilities. We felt that was fair. When their house was repaired, we helped them find 2nd hand furniture and other things. If the situation would have been reversed they would have done the same for us. Two years ago some very close friends bought the last 10 acre property next to ours. While their land was being excavated, she stayed in their house (4hours away) and he stayed in (our then) vacant apartment for a week. Again, it was not a big deal. They’re an older couple and he knows all about taking care of an orchard, where we don’t. I have planted a small orchard for personal consumption so when their house is finished being built, he will teach us how to prune and take care of our orchard, while we give them 1/2 the harvest. Furthermore they have no garden space and we have enough for us and my wife’s parents. So we grow enough vegetables to can and dehydrate for us and them. They repay us with 1 pig and 1/2 of a beef grown every year on their 10K+ acre ranch in MT. Likewise when our friends get moved into their new house then they’ll do part of the work in our garden (which we’re doubling this year), so they too can have vegetables for the winter.

Stay a week, Venmo some money with stating rent(that they don't see), bam he is a renter, then accuse her of doing harm before she starts eviction , boom restraining order and she is kicked out of her own home, then boom property was abandoned and if the county could restated it as such, pay property tax, it's his. Happens so much I had to go and shoo a person away from my aunt's place(she had to temporarily transfer over title to me for $50, only effective way in this state to get rid them) and that is how I owned a house for 2 months for $50. She bought it back for a whopping $75. Tough bargain.

When a water heater went out at our house, we would just suck it up until the repairman could get there and fix it. If it meant cold showers, so be it. You have to teach your kids that you sometimes just have to tough it out. So yeah, Dave's lie about the water heater isn't even believable, not for a second. It just makes him sound stupid.
