Review and water, weight test of Malone roof rack. click the link below to buy this roof rack? Below is my Amazon affiliate link. New low price confirmed 2022 amzn.to/3D4i2LC
In all fairness to Malone, I guess high pressure water from the car wash isn’t the same as a regular rain shower. The last few days it rained and zero water in my car or on the seats.
I wonder whether waterproofing spray on the straps would help. But as an old preacher said, “Whether the weather be cold or whether the weather be hot, whether the weather be rainy or whether the weather be not, we will weather the weather whatever the weather whether we like it or not.”
Most definitely water gets in through where the strap goes in. Other then the leak through the seal this roof rack is heavy duty enough to load two kayaks on top of it.
I just washed my car and the water follow the straps and enter inside. I can’t imagine with a big rain. I Will try to put a piece of rubber on straps to keep the water outside. Also i cut the bars to 44 inches with a grinder to fit on my toyota yaris 2012.
@johnnyrebel3340 That's what I did. It doesn't matter either way. The strap isn't made of rubber, so it wicks the water into the car regardless. However, it being on the other side prevents as much water touching it.
The reason they leave the sliding door open is because Amazon gives them a really dense area and probably he has a lot of packages in the same place so it takes a really good effort to open and close this door after a while, that's the main reason.😃
@@BillyKayaks I have used it and tested it with a smaller kayak. Seems like it is going to work fine, the test kayak never moved and the cross bars stayed in place just fine. It was a little noisy at higher speeds, and I'm nervous about getting it up to highway speeds, but I'll take baby steps and see how it goes. Just purchased an Old Town PDL 120 this week and plan on giving it a go this weekend, will let you know how that goes.
@@DoubleBogeyBass How has this roof rack been for you the past 8 months or so? I plan on buying one too and just wanted to know how it went with a 12 ft kayak going on the highway.
@@TainiiLee I really have not had any problems to speak of. I’ve now taken it to the Delta several times, and that’s about 1 & 1/2 hours from me. It does just fine on my car. I will say though that on my 2 door car with the weight of the kayak, it does push the roof in a little bit on my car, but it pops right back up after I take it off. For me it’s not really an issue because I don’t really care about the condition of my car, it’s 12 years old. I have a video on my channel called first impression of my kayak and at the 5 minute mark I show a little video of it on my car. I should do a follow up.
I also have a 4 door altima. About how far from the front/back window/windshields do you place the bars? The further away I space them it does not look "flat". My assumption is once I load a kayak on there it won't really matter but I dont want the kayak pointing "up" at all (front bar looks higher than back bar when I put it on there). Altima is a 2022 model but they don't appear to have changed much.
I just installed on my 2019 Mazda CX-5, the cam buckle doesn't tighten like a ratchet strap therefore it's always loose. I wouldn't trust it over 35 mph. 100% returning it as I think it's unsafe and can't believe it's legally sold.
I don’t really like cam buckles for applications like this, seems like an over kill. I’m not an engineer, but these seem safe to me. I’ve never had them loosen. Even if they did, the strap is inside the vehicle with you LOL
Thanks for this review, I've been looking for a modestly priced rack, I only need it 4-5 times in the summer so paying 3-4 times the price for a yakima or thule just wasn't in the cards. It's been over a year since this video, are you still happy with the rack?
I ended up buying a truck, not related to the rack. Now I just throw the Yak in the back of the truck, but I used the Malone rack for an entire kayak fishing tournament season with no issues. This includes practice or pre-fishing too.
How did the straps do staying tight? Did you take the kayak on the highway at all on top of your car? I’m looking to take mine on the Highway about an hour away at probably 75 mph and just wanted to know your experience. Thanks
@@RStewart7244 I’ve driven over 3 hrs each way to a lake on the highway with no problems. The rack straps inside the car never loosened, I stopped several times to check the kayak straps because those can loosen. I also bought some hood and trunk straps to keep the kayak straight. This item was like $12 on Amazon Propel by Shoreline Marine Hood and Trunk Loop Kayak Tie Down Straps www.amazon.com/dp/B01CRBXQUK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_AD1bmzwDuyDov
I don’t use this anymore, but I just saw someone car top their kayak the other day and it’s not too difficult. Once this is installed it is just like a permanent rack. Try searching for “loading Kayak on car” or something similar. Have fun kayaking!
I"m really giving this system some consideration. I have two concerns: 1. The rain that might come into the vehicle. 2: The straps on the inside of the car would annoy me while driving. After two year of use, do you notice water entering the vehicle at all? Especially while driving? And do the straps annoy you while driving? Thanks
I have this rack. I drove it several times on 760 mile trips with a kayak on top. When it rained, it poured in through the straps. I got silicone boot waterproofing spray, and soaked the straps good from the top of the strap to where it would be well inside the car. Let it dry. NO water inside whatsoever. I have used them 10 times since, still no water inside. Less than $10 solution. No pun intended.
