She wasn’t his wife, he intentionally listed her as his beneficiary. The family fighting over his money is probably why he didn’t have them on his documentation in the first place.

Exactly. For him not to consider his family to begin with over his girlfriend makes you wonder what the relationship was between him and his family. That girlfriend is about to receive an unexpected windfall.

Exactly. They don't really go into the story or what happened with this couple but if you are designating non-family on forms that usually means that *gasp* he doesn't want his family to have the money. I have never designated a non-family member on a form like that. Obviously a lot of things could have happened since they broke up. He got remarried and divorced and somehow the account was missed... there might have been some type of physical violence that broke up the boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. Who knows...

@JohnnytNaturalI agree. Idk why ppl think it’s crazy that he would name his gf as his beneficiary and not his family. First, many women take care of that stuff and she might have been the one to fill out the form, have him sign it, and send it in for him. Second, that was his SO at the time, so maybe he thought he was goin* to marry her. That doesn’t mean he didn’t want his family to get his money AFTER he broke up with the ex girlfriend. I saw it all the time, people would forget to update their beneficiaries OR they would think that they did update it when the update never went through.

My paternal grandmother (my mom as I knew her) gave me everything. She literally gave her children (which includes my dad), $1 so they couldn't contest it. I didn't even know most of this until she passed. I am incredibly grateful for my mom!!!!!

I worked for a life ins. company during the early 2000's this is quite common, many men who'd been married multiple times would still have the 1st wife listed as the beneficiary.

Don’t forget to update your contingency beneficiary as well. That’s the person who inherits your benefits if the original beneficiary is no longer here. A lot of people forget that part.

You’re so right and also how a change in live effects who gets what. A husband and wife with a small child makes her sister the beneficiary of a 100,000 ( a person) life insurance policy if both parents die in an accident other wise each spouse inherited. They wanted her sister to have money to take care of their child. They end up getting a divorce years later but the ex wife keeps up the policy for both of them. The dad dies when the child is 18 years old but VA law says an ex spouse can’t inherit so the sister inherits the 100,000. The sister doesn’t care that their child is now going to college and just says it’s the law too bad. It’s now a family drama. So make sure like you said everything is up to date when there are life changes.

There's a form for a contingent beneficiary or beneficiaries if something shld happen to the primary beneficiary....Their share is to be given equally among contingent beneficiary/beneficiaries Also, u can make it understood (in writing) that if something shld happen to any beneficiary ( primary/contingent) their share is to be divided equally among the other(s)

I'm not in TX so there's that, but it cost around $3,000.00 for my mom to put her house and belongings in a trust for my sister and me. Plus, there would be more charges if she needed to alter it later. This will save is money and headaches down the line though, so I really appreciate that my mom did this for us.

My grandma had a will from the 90s that wasnt updated. It was from before my sister was even born and my other sister was only 4 years old. The will said the only thing the sister who was 4 at the time got was my grandma's riding lawnmower 😂. I guess when she was 4 she had said she wanted to inherit it. We decided as a family that despite it being the only will that it wasnt what my grandma wouldve wanted to do so we just divided everything up evenly.

My father never updated his bank account beneficiary when he got divorced, so everything went to my mom. And my uncle never updated the beneficiary with his employer after he got married, so his last check went to my mom. I do my best to keep my information updated. 😂

Mail can be stolen , there are many times updated my info and someone intentionally removed it and put past info on there systems even updating it several times to new addresses or phone numbers This alone can affect your mail and future endeavors by altered info

i used to have a life insurance policy and my main beneficiary was my nephew who didnt have a father present in his life ever since his birth and second was my mother. if i died in the time i wouldve wanted him to get the money not my family my family is okay they just sold a home for 620,000$ but my nephew never had anyone to look after him and also my family has always kinda stolen and loaned from me and not pay me back plus i dont have kids

I worked at charles schwab for a while, and this happened ALL the time! Another thing that happened was a spouse or child would call in as POA or they took care of the household but wasn't on the acct and they wanted to advise that the acct holder had passed away. Right then and there, we'd lock the acct down. The POA ends when the acct holder dies. Any remaining funds now go to the beneficiaries, if there were any. The callers would be FURIOUS.

Interesting situation. He definitely had added his girlfriend over 30 years ago for some reason, instead of one of his family members. Don't think his family will win their case, in the end. Reminds one of the case a few years ago of a man who had won a very huge lottery , over $300,000,000. He was already separated from his wife, but, he had not yet signed the divorce papers, that his wife had sent to him so she was entitled to half of the money. Just imagine, someone he despised to point of divorce and because he was slow with paperwork, he was forced to give her half of his winnings. Not a happy camper.
