As a Maori man myself whose iwi on my Nan and Koro's are from up north and the Waikato this behavior from the crowd is deplorable you can't have a civil discussion with them because the liberal parties and their friends from MSM has gotten them so emotionally charged with their baseless allegations towards you, national and NZ first that they can't think straight, no matter how much good you do for them you wont be able to get through to them they want to be kept in the dust and dung that labour has kept them in over the past 6 years, it's actually quite sad that they can't see that.

Finally someone who understands Te Tiriti! Thats exactly what it says and why it was formed. It allowed Queen Victoria to govern all New Zealanders whilst allowing Māori to continue tino rangatira over their possessions. Read article 3 where it is for all New Zealanders. Carry on David Seymour, no matter the push-back. The 'Treaty Principles' are nothing more than a blatant attempt to enhance the articles of the ToW to mean something more than they do. Here is the Maori version of the Treaty (as translated on the Waitangi Tribunal website): PREAMBLE - Victoria, the Queen of England, in her concern to protect the chiefs and the subtribes of New Zealand and in her desire to preserve their chieftainship and their lands to them and to maintain peace and good order considers it just to appoint an administrator one who will negotiate with the people of New Zealand to the end that their chiefs will agree to the Queen's Government being established over all parts of this land and (adjoining) islands and also because there are many of her subjects already living on this land and others yet to come. So the Queen desires to establish a government so that no evil will come to Māori and European living in a state of lawlessness. So the Queen has appointed 'me, William Hobson a Captain' in the Royal Navy to be Governor for all parts of New Zealand (both those) shortly to be received by the Queen and (those) to be received hereafter and presents to the chiefs of the Confederation chiefs of the subtribes of New Zealand and other chiefs these laws set out here. THE FIRST - The Chiefs of the Confederation and all the Chiefs who have not joined that Confederation give absolutely to the Queen of England for ever the complete government over their land. THE SECOND - The Queen of England agrees to protect the chiefs, the subtribes and all the people of New Zealand in the unqualified exercise of their chieftainship over their lands, villages and all their treasures. But on the other hand the Chiefs of the Confederation and all the Chiefs will sell land to the Queen at a price agreed to by the person owning it and by the person buying it (the latter being) appointed by the Queen as her purchase agent. THE THIRD - For this agreed arrangement therefore concerning the Government of the Queen, the Queen of England will protect all the ordinary people of New Zealand and will give them the same rights and duties of citizenship as the people of England.
My Great Great grandmother was full Maori - Te Atiawa. I dont want to be "Maori" because "Maori" are stuck in a feudal system. Instead of a chief controlling us we have a committee. This system is still keeping the majority of Maori poor. This is 2024....... how many countries in the world are still have Feudal systems? We have to stop blaming governments and past land losses for our ill health, gangs ( we dont object to or do nothing about) and everything else we moan about. Why cant Maori take personal responsibility for our health, wealth and happiness etc. You dont sign a treaty if you win the war. The question is how do Maori get out of the Feudal system that is holding all Maori back? At least the English land laws gave individuals rights to land and that solved many disputes. 5000 Maori "owning one piece of land does not work! Maori socialism does not work. Regardless of the controversy over the treaty and personal circumstances anyone in NZ can succeed financially , improve their health, own their own home etc if they study how to achieve and work towards there goals. If we wanted to change the past we should have won the war! Its time we stopped blaming the past, get out of the Feudal mentality and moved on as one country and one people.
There will always be conjecture around the Treaty as none of us were there at the signing. History is one person view or a group view of a event that happened in time, as we know you can have a hundred people see an event happen and you can get a hundred different stories of how that event happened. We shouldn't be fighting over a founding document, should we be changing a founding document is the question and do we have the right to do so. Changing the Principles will not bring New Zealanders closer in anyway. New Zealand culture is changing, our children are influenced by social media Influencers not by their parents and the influx of immigration has brought a melting pot of different nationalities and cultures to NZ and will continue to do so for many years to come. What i am getting at is how do immigrants vote if we have a referendum on a Treaty Principle Bill changes when they don't understand how the Treaty has come about and the History around that????One thing is clear with all the Polls around this is New Zealand is divided on this and will always be divided no matter which way this goes. We all need to find common ground as i think NZ culture that i grew up with is getting lost and what is left of that culture are fighting over a Treaty Bill change.
Democracy is not shouting down people you don't want to hear. What are you afraid of listening to? Seems like there are a lot of privileged people who get free time to turn up and yell or sing a long, or wear expensive clothing and jewelry, while complaining about not having enough? Good on you for leaving the comment open. I dont disagree with a lot Seymour says but this is just pricing a wasp nest for no real outcome. Even if the bill got through and a referendum was to go ahead what would it ask. It has to be two very short binary questions and I struggle to imagine what that would be other than, do you agree with the work done over 40 years by people how do have credibility and knowledge in the area of the treaty and who were put in place to represent the voters or should we scrap it all and start again with all the insane costs that would incur. I honestly cant see the point. I'm all for debate but there are many out there who have no idea how to debate and if you ask them what they think you are simply asking for a bun fight and a complete shambles. I honestly think Seymour is quite naïve in his social views but good on him for trying I guess and good on him for fronting. NZ really doesn't need this crap we have far more serious things to get on with in my opinion.
No its not as its very hard to define what a Maori is. The question is did you sign a deal with a group/business/person what ever and are you going to honor that deal or not. Correct and was not negated by the subsequent treaty. The Waitangi treaty was an addition to allow the crown to legally control the settlers who did not recognize the rule of the Maori Chief's. In terms of ownership and control of the land under Maori control this was never changed and based on the English wording in the Independence document was never the intent. @@user-mc6js8or3r
the problem is we are consistently fed the partnership mantra but the voices urging consideration of the Trreaty as understood in 1840- understandings documented at the time- are given little exposure. I think a referendum is premature, because we have to understand the issues before we can judge them. The key will be the Select Committee- as long as it is impartial-followed by a balanced and objective review of history, an education in archival evidence as well as in oral recall totally independent of the Waitangi Tribunal and its divisive interpretative focus.
I liked your korero. But one tip -let the microphone do the work, rather than stressing your voice. That can be done, but you need a trained voice to pull it off. So, the suggestion is move into the microphone ,being very careful not to make it pop or distort,. Then let your voice go down slightly to a lower and richer register. what insult on Waitangi Day there were swearing, calling names, shouting and screaming at groups of people. When I watch that it makes me think some people were acting like little boys and little girls who have just lost all the toys out of the cot .One speaker was trying to talk. Low educated, self righteous, arrogant, dogmatic people are trying to sing and stop him from speaking the truth. what we must never forget when we are celebrating Waitangi day, is that the very first people that came to New Zealand with butchered, murdered and even eaten by a second, group I can guarantee the first lot of people that were here were very peaceful, so they would not have had the treaty of Waitangi because of there attitude.. I am so glad that we have a government who is going to look at the Treaty of Waitangi because it affects everybody in New Zealand. On the specifics of the Treaty, I've seen some originalist interpretations that dispute ACTs view. For reference, when it comes to law, I'm very much in favor of Originalist and Textualist views - with the caveat that if those have a bad outcome, then the law/treaty needs to be amended. The key issue for me, however is that anytime there has been any law: positive or negative, proscriptive or prescriptive - that is only applied based on Race or Cultural identity - it has never ended well. And that is what I wish to prevent.

Also read One Sun in the Sky (Ewen mcQueen) for a general overview on the topic of sovereingty, and "Change and Context, another look at the Treaty of Waitangi" (2002) for a historical and contextual overview based on archival records.
