A lot of people who are new to mixing pay a ton of attention to the vocals, but not enough attention the most human part of the voice: the breath.
Today I'm going to show how to easily take your singer's breath out of the equation by putting them on their own tracks.

Amazing! I have about 8 hours of voiceover I'm working on and I was getting really frustrated at the idea that I would have to spend a ridiculous amount of time de-breathing in automation. This is a real saviour!!

this is gonna help out so much. i was going thru super tediously and adjusting volume levels to quiet breaths down after using the waves debreath plugin as well. the plugin works pretty good but i thought they could still be heard just a little too much in comparison to other music i was comparing to on spotify that sounds very professional and clean. your method came out great

This technique doesn't always work. DeBreath sometimes extracts breaths along with initials of the following vocals, and it results in a clipping sound. For a 3 min radio ready song, I would always recommend going manually. Takes hardly 20 minutes.

Awesome trick! Often for me de-breathing it's just another aspect of the Melodyne process. You can turn down the amplitude of the breaths as part of the vocal-tuning work flow- but this technique is super handy for easily being able to effect the breaths all at once. Thanks man!

What if you just want the breath out and don't want to buy DeBreath? Do you do a crossfade between the two sections once the breath is removed? I did two mic tracks on a classical guitar and I can hear myself breath in a few times between sections. That breath is on each track.

This is an amazing trick, and I really would love to use it. I bought DeBreath and did everything exactly how you did, but DeBreath takes out some of my actual vocals on the "voice" track, so unfortunately I can't do this trick. Maybe it's a bug or something.

i am right in thinking you should not be adding dynamic compression to the "breath" part of the vocal once it has been separated?(because you don't want to increase volume of the breath)... But it's ok with tonal compression because that gives that "spitting out" effect that you talked about in a previous video? Thanks
@masteringcom
@masteringcom 5 лет назад
Dylan here - you can certainly experiment! With certain harder genres, that would work well. Just make sure to use your ears. As my old mixing mentor used to tell me... "if it sounds good, it sounds good."

Funny that I got to this video because I am not liking the waves de breath plug-in and I was looking for different options. It can be so finicky and takes way to long to dial in to where it’s not chopping out words. Your take is interesting and I’ll give it a try.

Nice tutorial. Confusing as hell though when you created duplicate tracks where you were just running the same process with the original audio file, but just changing the plugin parameters you wanted to bake into the bounce...So much easier to follow if you just bounce one with the plugin set to "voice" then rename the new track, and then go back to original track and change parameter to "breaths" and bounce again. Both times it will create a new track and you don't have to confuse yourself with more tracks just to duplicate the original file that you're bouncing in place anyways....
@tedb1015
@tedb1015 5 лет назад
Since the processing just makes the breaths louder the first step which lowers them would seem to be adequate...it really only matters on quiet songs. I don't hear the breaths on the song I'm doing now because it's a dance /rock.
@HeartSoulLeake
@HeartSoulLeake 5 лет назад
Trust, listeners hear those breaths, because the vocal is usually produced with louder volumes. This tip just gives an easier way to reach the goal of processing breaths separately from the other parts of the vocal.
@tedb1015
@tedb1015 5 лет назад
@@HeartSoulLeake It is a worthwhile tip for sure. To remove all the breathing you can try Audacity Noise Reduction which is free. Use it after processing.
@HeartSoulLeake
@HeartSoulLeake 5 лет назад
@@tedb1015 again, we are sure that there several ways to address this process. If there's a way to minimize the number of Daws, then we would go for that one first.

I tried the Waves plug-in demo and it did not work. And "Command D" made a duplicate vocal track without copying the actual vocal tracks (I highlighted the vocal tracks to duplicate - maybe I should COPY instead of "Command D"?

Why don't you just put the debreath as the first plugin so it won't get compressed, eqd signal?
@masteringcom
@masteringcom 5 лет назад
If you have any sends set up (parallel compression, saturation, delay, etc), then your breaths will still get processed. Putting the breaths on their own track will allow you to control how much (if any) of the breaths you want to send to your aux tracks.

easiest solution without 3rd party plugin, is add a noise gate, set it that it only takes the voice and cuts the breath, duplicate, an invert the gate.
