Mandy (2018) | First Time Reaction | Chad Introduces Maple to the Madness! 

The fights in this movie are truly something to behold. One of these fighters is a creature whose very essence transcends time and space, whose mind is a pit of twisted nightmares and the barest glimpse into it by a mere mortal is enough to drive them into a fit of rage and insanity. The other is the poor son of a bitch who has to fight Nicolas Cage.

I’m with Chad in his love for this movie, I was smiling the same way while watching Mandy for the first time

Mandy definitely has some oracle seeing ability, even before she takes the black acid. at the end credits it shows her illustration and it's that epic 80s van shot after Red releases the tiger. After she dies she guides Red through his dreams, and healing him, and in the end she transcends to a god, with Red worshipping and being guided by her will as her vessel, driving them into the universe.

Yeah, I love this film so much as well. Such a creative, hyper-expressive masterpiece, and a perfect vehicle for a hyper-expressive performance from Cage. I cannot wait for Cosmatos’s next one.

The experience that this movie gave me reminded me of my yearning to create something that will let people feel the same. ❤🎉 Nic Cage is a cultural icon, and the use of his style and intensity was so wisely unleashed here. This is how you cast the Cage.

This is one of my favorite films. I'm so glad to see someone else that loves it and a reaction to boot. Thanks so much for this. great time. Really, such an uncommon film experience the first time I saw this. Feel so lucky to have caught it at an underground theater.

Keep your eye on this director, Panos Cosmatos. He's only made two films and they are both visual masterworks. I expect great things from him in the future.

This was the PERFECT film to get Nicolas Cage out of the purgatory of direct to DVD nonsense he's been (admittedly, the best) part of for years. His new film, the A24-produced Dream Scenario, looks absolutely stellar!

So glad my brother got me to see this in theaters. Wild darn movie.

The first clue that told me how much I'd love this film is the use of King Crimson's Starless over the opening. A towering, majestic composition that perfectly sets a mood and colour to the screen. (And it's an easier film to follow than Behind the Black Rainbow, an earlier work of Cosmatos.) And I love Ridiculous Cage, more than Serious Acting Cage.

When I saw this a couple of years ago I freaked out at Linus Roache's role. I had watched him for a long time as Michael Cutter in Law and Order. Not even in the same galaxy as this guy!

I freaking love this movie. Masterpiece.

If y’all have not seen Pig (2021,) I highly, highly recommend checking it out after this reaction. It is my favorite Nicolas Cage film, and it definitely has similar themes/elements to this film. (I think Mandy is probably my second favorite Cage film.) What a treat ! This is on my underrated movie recommendation list alongside Infernal Affairs 2 and Elite Squad 2, both of which if you have not heard of I'd massively recommend. Panos Cosmatos needs to make more.

yeah Mandy has some kind of different pupil size in one eye, and what's weird is the main character of his first film also has strange eyes that he covers up with contacts. not sure what the metaphor is there.

Next do Beyond the Black Rainbow

The movie is ripe with mythological symbolism. Salamanders were once thought to be immune to fire. MANDy. SalaMANDer. This is foreshadowed with the lake scene with Mandy as she emerges illuminated by fire early on - her spirit lives on bound to Red, that's why he gets basically transported into her heavy metal fantasy-tinged version of reality. I love this movie so much.

I a lot of ways, this movie is a lot like the Marv section of Sin City. The biker gang is a lot like Kevin by way of the Cenobite, that hitman gang in Hobo with a Shotgun, and that one painting in The Royal Tenenbaums. The main bad guy in this is like a take on the guy behind everything in the Marv story. Nick Cage’s character is kind of like Marv, and his relationship with his girlfriend is like a take on why Goldie was with Marv; although Goldie is with Marv because of the immediate danger she’s in, while the backstory the girl tells in this implies it has to do with her father. I do wonder if this was originally offered to Arnold Schwarzenegger. There’s a lot with Cage’s character that seems like references to previous Schwarzenegger movies.

Love this movie as much as Chad but Maple's reaction to this has put Diegesis at the top shelf of all the reaction channels for me.

Okay now do Pig But back to Mandy; this is quintessential Nic Cage, and arguably his best film (next to Pig, of course) Yeah def gonna Patreon that request :D

Also in Astrology Saturn and Jupiter balance each other. Saturn creates safe boundaries and rewards discipline. Jupiter expands. It sees opportunity indiscriminately. Both together keep each other in check - letting the person expand within reason. In the film Mandy balances Red(Nick Cage) Also Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces (the dreamers- the philosopher and the artist) Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius (the provider and the emotionally detached thinker)

I watched Mandy like 5 times over 4 weeks when it came out. Just absolutely transfixed. None of it makes sense. Who cares. It's awesome.
