I grew up in England until spring '64: used to watch all the groups on TV, Friday..Ready, Steady Go, and Saturdays, Thank Your Lucky. Stars. Manfred Mann's first big tune was '5-4-3-2-1!' Also remember their cover of Dylan's 'The Mighty Quinn', from January'68!
Do you remember a short-lived campaign (*early 90s I think if I'm remembering right) to make "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" the national anthem, the American national anthem. lol I was down for it. Who the heck can sing what we have now?!
I think we learned some useful things in those years buddy, like right and wrong, peace and honor, and a love for music and family. And that jeans should have massive flares on them and not be skinny at the ankles!
This is the best version of this song that I have heard. Never seen it live. The extra drums and back ups on this compared to the radio version?....FIRE!! /d
Honestly, I'd for for practically any functioning adult in the upcoming election. Problem is, we can't find one. @JAMEL_AKA_JAMAL would have it won, hands down.
Great point!! That’s an all time favorite for me. It’s a near & dear one for me too. My grandfather(grandparents raised me) was in the air force several decades back in the day day! Once,He was stationed at Alaska for 5 yrs. they always called him the mighty Quinn... his last name is Quinn. In military your last name becomes first. he was always Quinn the rest of his life. (That was way bf I was born.) every night we’d would play records all the time when I was young and that song was a staple... played all the time😉😊💕 The Mighty Quinn became my grandfather!
That was a virtuoso live performance! I'd only ever heard the studio version, which is brilliant. I'm amazed they were able to play a song this complex live and so well. Wow!
@@michaelbochnia5686 No, I can't quite get there! What was it? I just thought -, the phrase, 'the flip side,' must seem odd to the generations who only have had CDs and downloads! 😀
Manfred Mann is the keyboard player who collected various musicians around him. This group is actually Manfred Mann Chapter Three. Dylan once referred to Manfred as being his favourite remaker of his songs. "With God on our side", "The Mighty Quinn", "If you gotta go, go now", "Just like a woman", "You angel, you"
I've saw this Band in Hamburg/Germany in the 90s for free on the big Party called Hamburger Hafengeburtstag (Harbours Birthday). I was about 23 years old and was amazed and fascinated by this song and the band was so good. This is really good music with power, surprise (changes of the speed) and it has a good sound ! I love your reactions - keep on rocking! Sorry about my english - greetings from germany. Love and Peace!
As a general rule I hate solos yet the studio version solo section is excellent and fits the song perfectly. The studio version is also one of the few songs from that eras top 40 and what I grew up with at the time, that I still will listen to
Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Madman drummer bummers Indians in the summer With a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps As the adolescent pumps His way into his hat With a boulder on my shoulder Feeling kinda older I tripped a merry-go-round With this very unpleasing Sneezing and wheezing The calliope crashed to the ground The calliope crashed to the ground But she was blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Some silicone sister With her manager mister Told me I got what it takes She said, I'll turn you on sonny to something strong Play the song with the funky break And go-kart Mozart Was checking out the weather chart To see if it was safe outside And little Early Pearly Came by in his curly-wurly And asked me if I needed a ride Asked me if I needed a ride 'Cause she was blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light She got down but she never got tight She's gonna make it to the night She's gonna make it through the night But mama, that's where the fun is But mama, that's where the fun is Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun But mama, that's where the fun is Some brimstone baritone Anticyclone rolling stone Preacher from the east Says, "Dethrone the Dictaphone Hit it in its funny bone That's where they expect it least." And some new mown chaperone Was standing in the corner Watching the young girls dance And some fresh-sown moonstone Was messing with his frozen zone Reminding him of romance The calliope crashed to the ground But she was blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night (Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat) Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night (With a boulder on my shoulder feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground) Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night (And now Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers daddy's within earshot save the buckshot turn up the band.) Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night (Some silicone sister with her manager mister told me I got what it takes She said I'll turn you on sonny to something strong) She got down but she never got tired She's gonna make it through the night

My first concert, Manfred Mann's Earth Band in Germany, 1979 in support of their Angel Station album. This song introduced me to the band, but their album Watch made me a diehard fan.
Cheap Trick is the best. "Voices" is a great song and "On Top of the World" too , along with "I Want You to Want Me" (arguably on of the greatest pop rock songs ever) and "Surrender". The Baby's was a great suggestion, I would include "Midnight Rendezvous" and "Headfirst".
I hear ya. Big hit. This was played at lot in the squad bay when I was stationed at Camp LeJeune North Carolina back in 1976. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant
@@jamelakajamal -Damn. Then I'm ashamed to say I was unaware of that, but happy to know how I'll be spending my time in the next little while. Great channel.
Still play it a lot on the local classic rock station where I live. I have a little joke that's mostly true about every time I get in the car, I hear Blinded By the Light or Oh Sherrie or both at some point along the drive.
Hey Jamal - You'll know of these other Mannfred Mann classics: Manfred Mann - "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy" and Manfred Mann - "Mighty Quinn" which was played in the 1989 Denzel Washington movie "The Mighty Quinn". Worth a look if you appreciate Denzel's acting.
JamelAKAJamal This was really good.. Im old enough to remember watching this when it first aired. That being said, i would like to suggest you try listening to this same song in studio version and sit back and enjoy✌🏿
For whatever reason, this is one of my top 5 all favorite songs (MM version of course). I never tire of hearing it and it always makes me smile. Music not only elicits emotions, but can transport us back in Time. Such a simpler time.
Great song. I'll never understand why Dylan put such a weird version of the song on the album; he left a great version on the cutting room floor that didn't come out until years later, that's much better than any of the covers!
Dylan wrote a lot of great songs covered by other artists. The Mighty Quin by Manfred Mann. It Ain't Me Babe by the Turtles. Mr. Tambourine Man by the Byrds. All I Really Want to do by Cher.
When I was in high school, we had someone play a popular tune over the school intercom in the morning. The principal threw a fit when this was played because he misunderstood duece as douche.
one of my favorites! I was so young in 1976 but… POW! 💥 here came this song and it played for years all the time! Ahhhhhh….. Skating rinks and youth! ✨💖✨
Is anyone capable of this type of music any more? 70's -80's have to be the golden era of music. This song is from the album the roaring silence great album if you can find it. Nothing today compares to the classics and they are still appreciated to this day which speaks volumes doubt if much played on the radio today will stand the test of time like these songs,
Yvonne Elliman is the first person I have a memory of hearing on the radio. I think it stuck with me at the age of 6 because of those incredible high notes and I had never heard anything like it before.
GREATEST ALL TIME COVER PERIOD! Springsteen wrote this song for his 1973 album "Greeting From Asbury Park" Springsteen thought he wrote a hit song. He did, but Springsteen's version never charted. However, Manfred Mann turned it into a #1 single in 1977. Funny thing is, Manfred Mann's other #1 hit, was "Might Quinn", which reached #1 in 1968. The song was originally written and recorded by Bob Dylan as "Quinn the Eskimo". Manfred Mann loved covers. He covered several Dylan songs and 3 Springsteen songs. In addition to "Blinded by the Light", he also covered "Spirits in the Night" and "For You"
Manfred Mann has a unique talent for taking other artist's songs and making them his own to the point where don't know someone else did it first, and prefer his version even if you do.
I've always loved Manfred Mann. They were so DIFFERENT. Even in the 60s, they were a complete divergence from the usual British bands, with elements of jazz. The lyrics were always way out there. Thanks for playing this.
Manfred Mann had their first hit in the 60's with ' Quinn The Eskimo '. They released another version on one of the " Manfred Mann'n Earth Band ' albums in the 70's .
Mike Smith Springsteen himself once said (jokingly) that the reason why this version was a hit and his wasn’t was due to ”douche” instead of ”deuce”. I think it was on VH1 Storytellers.
At least 10 wooo's from the Jman! Must be good. Manfred, yup that's his first name, Mann is his last name. He's the keyboard wizard. He put the earth band together. The entire band is quite talented. Manfred needs more credit for his keyboard wizardry. This is simply put one bad aZz jam. That's why it lives forever!
Saw Chris Thompson sing this live back in the early 80s when he was touring with his band as Chris Thompson and The Islands. Absolutely superb. Such a great rock vocalist.
What I love about the 70's music, is all the transititions...you Litetally go through so many 'States of Being' n one song...so multilayered...Super Consciousness
