I live in Miami, Florida born and raised. Gosh, there were mangoes everywhere. Neighbors did not mind if we climbed their trees and spent a couple of hours climbing and then eating them. There were lots of them on the ground as trees were loaded and many just fell and went to waste. It was paradise. Then, we had an influx of people that did not like any kind of tree and cut so many trees down, even oak. Yards were cemented and now mangoes are sold on the side of the road as well as avocados for more money than I care to spend. We have a home near Coconut Grove and we have two mango trees, one starfruit. We treasure them, and like you we are organic. This was nice to see, I have never heard of them, but am betting that they are close.
This edible nursery is just gorgeous , what a awesome , Wow! Wow ! And Wow ! Place to go ! Thank you Pete for taking us on this Journey ! I hope this nursery business will always be there. How could anyone not love these trees . 🙏 🇺🇸
I get excited when I see a GreenDreams video poppin up, you started me on my dream whirlwind of permaculture...now back from Iowa with my father's house sold, I can relax and work in the yard...did I say relax...I'm poundin'...!!!
Pete, your knowledge of different varieties and cultivars is AMAZING! I assume years of landscaping and lots of study! Thanks for sharing this inspiration, man!
*Edward Erfurt ... I've never tasted a mango from Florida.... I had severe allergic reactions to mangoes all my life...until a few years ago in my late 30's when I tried one and never had any problems... But I've never seen any for sale where I live in Britain❗️*
I'm from SEA and mango is probably my most favourite among tropical fruits. A delicious cold dessert which can be made from ripe mangoes is ''mango with tapioca pearls''. But I love eating it unripe (as in sour-green) with some savoury shrimp paste. I hope these young trees will grow healthily and yield lots of fruits for the gustatory happiness of many. Thank you for sharing.
Oh man, you're no the only one. Edibles nurseries are like heaven... and when you find a variety of a fruit you've never heard of or that you were looking for for ages, it feels like Christmas x 10 : D
Can’t wait to start my own fruit paradise in the Canary Islands. Working on it, step by step. Thanks, Pete, for sharing the passion, the excitement and the time and energy. You are looking great by the way!
I love mangos!💕 You the first person besides my doctor that have mentioned about allergic reaction to them and being related to Poison Ivy. Everybody else think s that is wéird. I am from Miami and I use to take naps up in the mango trees. I dont eat them any more. They are still tempting. Thank for sharing. There is still hope.
In Hawaii they call it "mango rash". Of course I didn't find that out until I had it, after having a bounty of Hayden mangoes which I ate, froze and made into pies. Fingers and around the mouth. BUT it cured my poison oak allergy, which I realized after exposure in the California Sierras.
That's outstanding. Unfortunately we don't get mangoes growing. Babaco's about as tropical as we get. I walked through an amazing property yesterday Pete. A redwood forest go along and turn the corner a Eucalypt forest turn the corner a maple forest... Massive fig plantation all cut to about 1.5 metres for ease of harvest. So much learned. If you ever come to NZ give me a shout out I'll point you to a few choice properties via the permies here.
Man that farm is definitely worth visiting, I will tell my friend and sister to go there and buy different kinds of mangoes! I have a few varieties of mango already I have 3year variety. Thanks for the upload mad respect bro
Seriously next level! We have the best mangoes in the world in Florida! Right now is peak season. I just shot a video at Zills other farm in Costa Rica last week.
Gary is a legend, I didn’t get to tour the whole Costa Rica nursery of zills, so I hope to get to through your future videos! Really epic footage collection in the intro to this video!
Your drone skills are crazy! I felt like I was coming in for landing on that opening. Really cool to see these spots from the aerial view first. And don't even talk about the nursery, this is crack for me. Great vids. Keep them coming.
WOW !!! PS, I give ya a big "10" on the pack n stack brother. So, basically ya pack em like you plant them ........ high and tight !!! LOL !!! 😎🤣😎👊 Also, awesome drone footage bra, I could almost feel the wind in my hair. 👍👍👍
Hi Pete, We spoke a few months ago, I design farms, gardens, pools, Intentional Communities, lakes/ponds, etc. My great grand parents had the old (I believe original) Mango Grove in Pine Island. As I understood, my great grandfather had bred a couple varieties, one named after my great grandmother. The one Grove there I believe sells one "Jay Byrd" (their last name was Byrd) so, wonder if you know of that one? As always, your videos are great and much appreciated.
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL back in the day, there was a Russian diplomat that brought the first broccoli seeds over to the US and my great-grandfather grew them. My grandmother used to tell stories about how they experimented with different ways on how to cook it once they grew it!
Someday when we meet, maybe my next trip to Florida to visit family, I'll share with you a bunch of other stories like that in the world of Florida farming, laying out some of the streets, My great-grandfather's supervising the crew that put the first railroad tracks across the Everglades, etc. Etc.
I bet they don't have sweet giant catimon developed by Rogelio Espejo Jr. this mango variety bears fruit in trunks and branches and weighs about 4 lbs. each
Some of our retailers here in AZ are bringing in those unique varieties like Val Carrie, etc...I think Zill is one main source. Outstanding video again, Pete !!
So mangos are in the poison ivy family. Wow, that's a interesting relative to have. I have never reacted to a mango, hopefully never will. A couple of years ago, three mangos grew up in my compost heap. I tried to grow them inside, but didn't work out . There wasn't enough light. What a huge mango, exotic fruit farm!!!! Keep growing.🌴🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌵🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴
Thank you for Highlighting my comment. I am glad the fresh mangos are the the ones you have to look out for. Up here in Michigan, we don't get the fresh mangos.🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺🌺🌺🌴🌴🌴🌺
I just am really interested in what plants grow where, and mangos are one of my favorites. Looking online for tropical fruit is one of my favorite hobbies. Yet up here you don't get the same freshness or variety. Thank you for Highlighting my comment. Keep a growing!!!🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌺🌺🌺
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL I was actually looking at your site the other day and wondering if you sell and ship plants to other states? I’m just north of Houston and am going to be starting a small food forest in the next couple of months and there are some rare plants that I’m looking for! Or more rare varieties of mangos and some others.
You're turning me into a permaculture junkie! LOL. I recommended you this morning to a lady with a blueberry farm. I bought 6 Chickadee High Bush blueberries from her.
Maybe not here at Zills but maybe Fairchild. I’ve heard Norris Ledesma talk about breeding for a north Florida/Georgia mango. That sure would be awesome!
Thank you for showing this. It is fun to see it. Good job with the Organic Farm!!! That is awesome!!! Will the Kerry mango grow in 9B FL? I am glad you mentioned the difference in fresh mangos because I really never liked store mangos.
thank you for another great vid, I wish I could grow some of these here where I am at in wa state with out a green house. Do you have any suggestions for books, on how to make food forest or have you written one?
Matt McGhee thank you! I would suggest checking out Eric Toiensmeir’s work, he’s in Massachusetts doing some amazing work with a small yard. He also has a few books available
Pete have you been to A Natural Farm in Howey in the Hills? They seem to be doing everything naturally and organically. I have several friends who only buy plants through them!
Thanks for the great video Pete; can you please give me some tropical fruit tree nursery suggestions that carry a good variety of mango trees for purchase and can ship to San Francisco Bay area? Thanks.
So Pete do you ship outside the US for example to Barbados in the Caribbean as yet? Or could you recommend a company that does even in this Covid 19 time?
When I was a kid I couldn't get any where near a mango tree or id break out in a bad rash but could eat the fruit with no problems. I love them but not interested in picking fruit from tree
This is my Kind nursery! I’m from Kenai Alaska I am going to move to Florida someday to grow my own tropical fruit forest 😀❤️👍 I am going need you come hole me with landscape fruit farm❤️👍
Do you still have to use some chemical fertilizers when weening trees over to organic or do you mean it takes time to transition to get them flushed? I'm experiencing yellowing and leaves dropping on a new tree and maybe that's why. Will they experience a shock of sorts if not weened off?
As a kid in miami my neighbors mango tree was like 50 ft tall and the mangos where about the size of two fists. when they fell you would wake up in the middle of the night. some people gamble , i plant trees,
Hi Pete I really enjoy your videos. So I want to start a mango fruit farm in Bushnell Florida. I’m planning on going with Tommy Atkins what would you recommend? Do you think it would work well here? Thanks man appreciate it!
Hey man! I think you’re too far north for mangoes, you need to be further south or closer to the coast. As for variety I would never suggest Tommy Adkins, they barely for human consumption. Drop us an email when you get closer. Thanks Admin@greendreamsfl.com
Hey pete, question! We're looking to move out to Okeechobee florida hopefully next year. Will mango trees grow good out there and be good producers? I believe the zone that we'll be in is 9b
I have a mango tree in my yard that’s mature and puts out quite a bunch they are fiber free very delicious sweet and a yellowish orangey flesh how do I find out what kind they are?
Pete, do you know where I can purchase a 25 gallon potted Duncan grapefruit? Hard to find. Also, when will those tangerines you planted, grafted, still be ready to purchase. I want to plant in Pensacola. Thanks
Now I know where I'll be going shoplifting since they dont want my money by mot selling to the public. Is it stealing if I leave the money behind? Lol I took a look at your inventory list. Just wondering if you shop to California.
