The mangrove or gold-ringed cat snake (Boiga dendrophila) is venomous, beautiful, and notoriously grumpy. That said, they can make very interesting and spectacular captives. So, is the mangrove snake the best pet snake for you?

You know it's going to be a rough video when the best thing that can be said about it's handling is that there are no recorded fatalities.

@@PhilipOberg TBF, more people go out of their way to handle dogs. They have more opportunities to cause trouble. Thankfully my dogs are incredibly docile. As in, my neighbor's kid let himself into our house because he saw them in the window and they didn't even bark. We realized what happened when we heard him laugh. They're terrible guard dogs lmao

the mangrove snakes venom is actually not bad its only classified venomous because its venom is worse than a hognoses venom but isnt gonna kill you whatsoever.
@datboi6026
@datboi6026 Год назад
@@erinb4237 This is correct. All docile dogs are docile, and every dog that has killed a person has killed a person. Generally aggressive dogs are more aggressive than non-aggressive dogs. For instance, my neighbor's dog who isn't aggressive is actually fairly non-aggressive for a non-aggressive dog who isn't usually aggressive to anyone, and I have had only positive experiences with him, as he isn't aggressive as a non-aggressive dog. Contrast this with an aggressive dog, like the one who killed my cousin when he was 7 years old, you will find that dogs who kill 7 year old children are aggressive (you can ascertain this by the fact that it killed a 7 year old child) and needless to say the dog was being aggressive while killing him (a dog he didn't go out of his way to handle, a fact that I know because it was a stray dog; stray meaning it had no discernable owner and was loose). As in, my cousin was killed by the dog (anecdotes such as these shall suffice as evidence since we're agreeing) and we can likely discern that the dog wasn't a non-aggressive dog by the fact that it killed a 7 year old child, something an aggressive dog would do. Hope this clears it up for you.
@jkellyid
@jkellyid 8 месяцев назад
@@erinb4237 , no one in my family that was bitten by a dog was going out of their way to interact with a dog, we were all attacked at different times when walking down the street getting out of a car in a parking lot at a park, etc. Just going about life typically a German Shepard (not the same dog in any of these instances) charges up without barking to put holes in you. Dogs will go out of their way to attack non handling humans. Dogs are connected to pack fatalities in many developing nations as well, commonly killing older people after dark, gold old wild stray dogs. But sometimes attacking people in cities in the day light leading to fatalities. Dogs, Buffalo, Moose, things all more dangerous to most of us than really any reptile, let alone natural predators with some mush around bears.

I saw a lovely enclosure for a nice sized Mangrove snake that had a 50 gallon aquarium at it's base with a 4' foot tall terrarium fixed above that. The enclosure had bifold doors for ease of access for maintenance. Lots of vines and branches for the snake with a place for a swim below that. He had a few archer fish in the tank. Beautiful setup.

Several years ago, when sharing an apartment with my brother, he came home with a mangrove snake one day. He had it set up in a decent enclosure on one side of the room, opposite from where I had a cage holding my beloved Florida King. After about a month of us sharing the place with each other and the two snakes, we awoke one morning to find my kingsnake had escaped in the night, crossed the room, gotten into the mangrove's enclosure and eaten it. Needless to say my brother wasn't too happy.

@@cogsandglimmers The thing is, a hognose isn't particularly likely to bite you unless you're really asking for it. Even when they strike, a lot of the times they don't bite. I LOVED mangrove snakes for yeeearrrrss (still do). Last year, I got the opportunity to work with a young adult WC individual, he was roughly 6ft long. He was absolutely amazing. He was a little nervous, but very quickly got to the point where he would be totally comfortable with my wrapping him around my arm or neck and shoulder while I went about work as usual at the pet store he was at. Longest record was 3 hours, no signs of stress, but a large group of people came in and I didn't want him to tag someone (or me for that matter). When he was ready to go back into the enclosure, he'd just get huffy and puffy, and if I didn't listen or put him back in time he'd false strike at me with the most minimal effort he could. He was honestly a joy of a snake to work with, and I was very close to bringing him home, but unfortunately there was a power outage overnight during late Fall, and nobody knew until the next morning. He ended up slowly crashing afterwards, and passed before I could buy him and bring him to a vet. I do fully intend to own one eventually though. I'm hoping I can get USCBBs of the sumatran, luzon, and sulawesi localities (:

I have one of these and it is the most beautiful snake I have ever owned. I handle mine in the daytime which is no problem as it nocturnal. I would not try it after dark. A large tub is great to keep them in. Mine is wild caught. I soaked it for two days, fed it live mice for the first two weeks and now it eats like a horse on frozen rats / mice. It is full of bugs and I will take it to a vet once I have put some more ounces on it. One interesting fact is that in Europe they are not regarded as any more dangerous than a hognose.

Thank you for the info. I was confident that there had to be some in between, but I didn't know what they were. Always happy to learn.
@Osprey1994
@Osprey1994 5 лет назад
I'm pretty sure that it's anaphylaxis, just like there are people who die to bee or wasp stings. Now I would also have a question as to which species is more likely to come in contact with humans and therefore increase the chances of a bite occuring. Some of the snakes with the highest body counts are indeed very toxic but they are also the ones that like to live close to humans (also the ability for local EMS to treat the bite). Lots of factors, but the Boomslang still takes the Cake if we are talking toxicity in a rear fang snake.

Hey Clint long time follower here! It's great to see you so close to 100k!! Congrats! I was just wondering though if we could get a 'best display pet?' series? Some of these animals are amazing but there are some of us that love to set up beautifully scaped biotopes with automated rain systems/mist systems and live plants so we can enjoy them as a slice of nature in our home! Kind of like a beautiful fish tank. I'm trying to decide what to get as a centre piece animal in it's own scaped tank but I can't decide between dart frogs, tree frogs, day geckos and snakes like the GTP!
