14:50 You completely missed the point of Frances taking Reba to visit the tiger. Being blind, she has no idea how to imagine the tiger. At the visit she touches, smells, and even listens to the tiger's heartbeat and feels its breath. It was a incredible experience for her, so much so that even Frances feels aroused by her excitement. Later in the evening she thanks him by making love to him. Frances lays awake and begins to feel regret for the killings and weeps. Incredibly well shot scene, with a great shriekback track.

Also, the whole juxtaposition of the Tiger & Francis Dollarhyde is interesting, and symbolic from at least two angles - 1) the innate but natural similarity of potential ferocious violence within each ... & 2) the symbolic taming of that in the tiger (through anesthetic) and in Dollarhyde (by the "anesthetic" presence of Reba) ... The natures of each killer are not changed, but are only temporarily held back by extraordinary outside factors. The calm cannot last long.

I saw the movie when it came out and I was truly fascinated by it. I was in the Army in the Military Police Corps, and I tried to identify with Will. I found his character mesmerizing. I also love the musical score so very hunting and to end with classic rock super song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly absolutely amazing. I just loved this movie and it was in many was a precursor for and inspired the CSI franchise and all those similar movie. It shed the light on a aspect of policing not really shown in cinema before. I guess I can understand why a 2023 guy may not see it the same way. I saw this much more believable than Silence of the Lamb and some stalking murdering transvestite. Parts of silence of the lamb actually made me laugh. But Manhunter for me was riveting from the beginning to the end.

The tone is way different in this one than the later Lecter movies. It didn't have a predecessor to follow in the footsteps. There's things I like better about Manhunter and there's things I like better about Red Dragon. Manhunter is (unfortunately) a little dated for the younger generation. Like you, I was around during the initial theatrical runs of all the Lecter films (I'm probably younger by a decade- turning 50 in half year) with Silence of the Lambs being the first I saw when it first came out on vcr tape. Manhunter has 80s written all over it where the others carry a more "period piece" feel to them. Tom Noonan definitely was a more imposing Francis Dolarhyde. In the book, that's how he was supposed to be- strong, imposing, monstrous in size. I'm not saying Ralph Fiennes is a wimp or nothing, but he doesn't strike that sense of dread into you just by looking at him like the way Noonan does. I mean think about it- you're woken from your sleep in the middle of the night and see this hulking man demolish your whole family in front of your dying eyes- that is SCARY! It's scary with a more normal sized man- but THAT! I wish Manhunter went more into the Dolarhyde story more or economized the run time better to fit everything in. Unfortunately it wasted too much time in the finale trying to (lol) make a music video to probably the longest running song in history! 🤣🤣🤣

Aggressively 80s? Almost like it was actually filmed in the 80s...

Anthony Hopkins is mesmerising as Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs but I really liked Brian Cox's more understated performance in Manhunter. Hopkins played Lecter a bit like a pantomime villain at times but Cox played him in such a way that you could believe a man like that could easily escape the notice of authorities. He was clever, cunning and, on the surface, appeared quite ordinary. Francis Dolahyde was a monster but there was a core of humanity deep within him. His crimes were motivated by his pain and anger but, when he experiences love for the first time, his mask slips and the pain and sadness come welling up. It's not often that a film about serial killers will show you the trauma of the killer and make you feel a bit of sympathy for the devil. I must admit to feeling some sadness for him.

08:04 - 08:07 I saw "Manhunter" in the theater way back in 1986, and when this scene occurred, everyone in the theater laughed...of course there were only 3 people in the theater...but we all laughed.

And I thought Chop Top Sawyer was the only one who could rock In A Vida De Gadda. Thank you for the video and doing my request. I've always thought the Hannibal Lecter/ Lecktor films were mostly underrated in the horror community and I am looking forward to this film series.

Keep watching this movie as there is a lot more under the surface that you can miss first time or even after many watches and this is not a Lector or Lecter movie but what he does do while stuck behind bars is amazing and scary the more you think about it. Also there are many more things left to the audience to work out like the the fact the tooth fairy does not question the bit about having sexual relations with his mother but does about being implied about being queer as he put it. Lots more to work out and I believe the Lector part of the story is like the book in how much he is in it.
