I love light houses they have a mysterious beauty about them, as well as the sea. The amazing old mansion ruins fit right into the picture. Yes, I can imagine Wadsworth sitting there staring out at sea, and getting inspiration for poetry.

I was in that area of Maine's seashore back in a girlhood vacation in 1967. I loved the sea and rocks, the surf sound, ocean smell, and the wind in my face. Your video brought it all back to me (except the "shore dinner" I had afterwards in town!) I didn't know until now the history of that magnificent lighthouse. Thanks!

I like to consider myself an educated man who is well traveled and yet I learn something from every one of your videos. Portland Head is one of our favorites and we like lighthouses. There is something special about its history and lovely location that sets it apart. It as well as Acadia N.P. are the first things I think of when I think of Maine; unless I'm hungry then lobster might be #1.

I grew up about 20 minutes from here (still have family in the area) and have been here countless times over the years. For people wondering, both the mansion and lighthouse are at Ft Williams park (along with the old military structures which I assume he’s going to show in the next video). You can just park your car and walk to all these things as they are all close to each other. Glad to see my home state represented.

I watched the first half a couple days ago but got interrupted and just got back to watch the rest. The mansion was definitely worth a look. Beautiful stone work. Didn't they offer a trip to the top of the lighthouse? Much like you, I hate heights, but I have gone to the top of every lighthouse I've had the chance to. Even walked the parapet with a death grip on the railing the whole way around. Last one was the Key West light.

Goddard Mansion? Is it somehow related to the Goddard University? Any info about why it has not had a Committee to restore it over the years? Trees and bushes growing inside? Since I was 6 weeks old in 1960, I have lived in and/or around the Seattle area. If you ever get a chance to come this way, check out Fort Casey State Park on Whidby Island and/or Fort Warden State Park in Port Townsend, WA. Huge defense to the gates of Puget Sound, back in the day. Used to sail from Seattle on a friend's yacht to the Port Townsend Jazz Festival every year. One weekend, the yacht next to us failed to set his hooks (anchors) properly, at low tide. Tide came up, pulled the hooks loose, swung around and damaged our boats. Same weekend? Up on top deck, watching two rafted (tied together) yachts, floating freely toward the shipping lanes in the Straights of Juan De Fuca. Not a person on board. Hey, Captain, take a look at this one. He called the Harbor Master, who called the Coast Guard, who towed the 2 yachts back to shore, displaced the Tour Boat (The Victoria Clipper) from Port Townsend/British Columbia, Canada Ferry out offshore, until they could locate the yacht owners. Ahhh, the memories.

I've been there twice, once for a day tour and once we stayed overnight, I'd like to stay a couple of days and just wander around a bit myself. Some places are unsafe I hear, unexploded ordinance and unstable buildings. I would be happy to help you with your planning when you decide to come, keep in mind, if you didn't learn to drive in either Boston or NYC, you might want to hire a driver with a van here instead of renting a car as driving is totally insane, and the cost is about the same anyway, we can help with that too. CT = Fort Griswold, Newgate Prison, Nathan Hale House, Mystic Seaport, MA = incredible tank museum in Stow (American Heritage Museum), MinuteMan Park in Concord-Lexington, and Boston. Lots to see/do in Boston. I recommend a beer and lunch at the Green Dragon Tavern. Some guy named Sam Adams riled up his Sons of Liberty there to go brew up some tea in the harbor. Well done! I spend a fair amount of time in Maine on business and vacation. I have seen most of the lighthouses and forts. Never knew about the Goddard house.

Reminds me of that dear old Christian song, "The Lighthouse". Note my name, lol. I am over 60. I thank God for the lighthouse. I owe my life to Him, for King Jesus is The Lighthouse, and from the rocks of sin, He has shown His Light around me, that I might clearly see... If it wasn't for The Lighthouse, tell me, Where would this ship be? Many YT versions out there. First time I heard it was in ~ 1973. I was 13. Another Christian sea-faring song? The Anchor Holds. Made popular by the amazing Christian vocalist and musician Ray Boltz, but written and sang by Lawrence Chewning (sp?). Lawrence has an amazing, powerful testimony about the origin of The Anchor Holds. I would highly recommend that you Google it on RU-vid. There's one vid on YT that's over 12 minutes long. Click there. Powerful, to say the least, as we all struggle these days heading toward the end of 2020. God is still our Lighthouse, and His eternal anchor still holds, firmly and unmoving in the storms of our lives. Amen? Ray Boltz loved the Lord to the center of his soul, but trajecically ended his own life, because he couldn't reconcile God's Grace with his homosexual proclivities. He finally repented, took his own life, and is now resting, "Sheltered in the Arms of God". Another great song about the storms of our lives. Great version? The Gaithers. Stay safe and well to you and yours, everyone, from your eternal sister in Christ somewhere near Seattle and around the World. Need a pep in your step? Google: Ivan Parker, When I Get Carried Away. ... and crank it up!, lol... Love and prayers, always. ⚘ 🙏❤🙏 ⚘

Portland Head is not America's oldest, which I believe is in Boston, but apparently it is the most photographed in the country. Did you make it up to Fort Knox in Prospect? I think it's older than Fort Williams. Lots more forest for you up there, too!
@TheHistoryUnderground
@TheHistoryUnderground 3 года назад
Correct. The oldest one is in Boston. Kind of want to go see that one now. Didn’t make it to Ft Knox. Gives me a good excuse to go back though 🙂
