Manual Vs Automatic Locking Hubs: Why I Chose Manual Hubs For The Ford Excursion

Manual versus Locking Hubs. A Canadian fella asked me why I wanted the manual hubs instead of the automatic OEM 4WD Locking Hubs. Well for 1) the Warn Hubs look great. 2) The Warn Hubs are stronger than OEM. 3) They are more reliable. Factory hubs have a tendency to stick in the locked position if they aren't used frequently or get dirty. and 4) With Manual hubs, I can put the truck on 4 Low, and run it in 2 Low by not locking in the hubs.
If you live in a cold climate where you don't want to get out of the truck, or need to put the truck in 4WD very frequently, maybe the factory automatic locking hubs are a better option. Or maybe you are just old and/or lazy and pushing that button and mashing the skinny pedal is just much more appealing... that's fine too!
Or ,maybe you just need that extra traction to gap somebody at the stoplight... Automatic hubs are probably the way to go. Nothing subtle about getting out of your truck at a stop light to lock in the front end...

As a native Georgian, I actually prefer the cold. You can always wear more in the cold, but when it gets hot you can only take off so much before you get arrested! Plus, even just a threat of snow makes everything stop, lol.

On the contrary, automatic hubs (and auto trans case shifters) often like to fail in our cold, especially after a fresh snow. Yes, it may suck getting snow in your boots just to flip your hubs mid snow drift. But at least once you get back in and throw the floor shifter back, you're fully locked in, no matter what!

@Freedom Worx Surprisingly no. Its a pretty base Fleet model. But it does have electric windows. Just lazy of Ford to do it like that. So, a little of both worlds with the Ford My biggest complaint is it rides like a truck. Has the camper suspension package on it. They engage fine because they're normally engaged. The vacuum disengages them so you'll be spinning your front axles even if it's in 2wd if the vacuum line breaks, which it will.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx Год назад
Factory Excursion hubs are not normally engaged. The are vacuum pulse engage, and vacuum pulse disengage. The later hubs are as you described.
@mccarterjg
@mccarterjg Год назад
Well for the superdutys in the 99 through 2016 or so, are actuated with vacuum, the problems is when your hub leaks air and you don't fully engage 4*4 or at all, amd it gets real cold the grease dirt grime within the actuator hub will harden and hold that axle locked causing it to spin going down the highway being the vacuum is much stronger than the release/return spring in the hub. Actually I believe the 2018 F-150 uses vacuum to disengage the front axle that was read not tested though, I believe some of the other half ton trucks do this too so it still has four-wheel drive when the system fails but until then you save an extra .2 mog

When capturing videos always turn your camera horizontal. Notice, every computer screen, TV screen, movie theater screen, and the like, are orientated horizontal. Watching your video the left one-third and right one-third of the video is cut off. Thus, we see the center narrow and tall, a stick video. Look around you, you see your world considerably more horizontal than vertical. Watching your video is like looking through a keyhole or wearing tight horse blinders. Hope this helps you and others. Good news, I also live in GA as well.

The front drive shaft is spinning going down the interstate regardless of being engaged or not.. I also hear people claim manual hubs are stronger, however I’ve never had a automatic fail. As long as you back up a few feet each time you disengage then it’s now a issue. So really we’re just down to they look cool, and I’ll give you that on a situational basis.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx Год назад
My driveshaft does not spin without the front hubs being engaged in 2wd. The hubs don't engage the axleshafts and the transfer case doesn't engage the driveshaft. If you drive a GM or Dodge...different story. But I assure you that the driveshaft on this Excursion is not spinning in 2WD with the hubs unlocked 🤷‍♂️

@@freedomworx in a toyota the front drive shaft doesn't spin all the time. Only the axle half shafts spin all the time & furthermore those that spin all the time are actually stronger bevause it is one solid piece of shaft at the hub. The only benefit with toyotas is the ability to use low range without locking in the front so you can still make tight turns. Yoda's won't turn much when locked in.

Ah yes, Ford's IWE locking system. Integrated Wheel End. This design operates somewhat backwards from what some think. In 2WD, vacuum is applied to the IWEs, which pulls the locking cog away from the hub, allowing for free wheel. When switched to 4WD, vacuum is removed to the IWEs. Without vacuum, the spring inside each IEW pushes out the cog via a spring and locks in the hub. Ford put out an early tsb that more or less capped off the vacuum supply to the IWEs to allow them to remain fully engaged all the time. This eliminated the partial engagement that caused a ratcheting sound and eventually lead to failure of the IWEs. And since the transfer case remains in 2WD, no power is sent to the front diff.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx Год назад
I think that was after the Excursion era. Excursions are pulse to engage, pulse to disengage.
