In my humble opinion, that's only partially true. Yes, Phil's characters were unquestionably a great part of the golden age, but there were also other factors, such as the death of Lunchlady Doris' VA, the departure of their most noteworthy writers like Brad Bird. Not saying you're wrong, but rather that there were OTHER factors that led to the downfall of our favorite Matt Groening non-Futurama characters.

Enviri yeah his wife was an absolute bitch to do that murder suicide. She should have got the help she needed. Or at least if she couldn't stop herself from ending her life she could have at least limited it to just herself. We lost a great voice actor and comedian that day 😢

Also Fry's first name Philip is a tribute to him. It was originally just Fry but Mat Groening gave him a full name after Phil's death.

Hearing some of these voices I definitely can see what they went to Billy West for Zapp Brannigan in Futurama. He definitely captured the spirit of Phil Hartman’s voice. It sucks Phil died in such a tragic event. He was extremely talented.

I didn't know until Saturday that Phil was supposed to be Zapp. After reading such, it made more sense why Billy did the voice in a phill esk way. Always thought there was quite the similarity to a voice Phill would do prior to knowing esp seeing the clip from fish police in this video. Sounds like zapp.

I was 13 years old when he died. It really shocked me because I thought it was a bad dream. The SNL days especially with Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Darryl Hammond were the days when comedy was so good because they cared about the quality. He just had everything. It's very rare.

Even though he only voiced the secondary characters, Phil Hartman was the real soul of The Simpsons. Ever since his tragic death, that show just wasn't the same anymore.

Agreed. And while the death was also sad for people who like his work on Saturday Night Live, I don't think it affected SNL as much as it did The Simpsons. For one, Saturday Night Live has plenty of slings and arrows tossed at it since the original cast left in 1980. For another, Hartman left the show in 1994, which led to SNL's 20th season being crap, but it was saved by Norm Macdonald's Weekend Update and, of course, Lorne Michaels overhauling the show with a new team of writers and new cast members. Hartman did come back and hist twice before the murder, so I guess the only bad thing about his death for SNL fans is the fact that he only hosted twice and if he didn't die, he'd probably be a Five Timers Club member by now or host as much as Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, and John Goodman combined.

Hands down one of the most tragic deaths in the entertainment industry. He was not only very very talented and would have only became even more renowned, but he was also a very nice guy. Rip Phil Hartman You didn't get a fair chance:/

Phil Hartman was always one of my favorites. I think of him as one of the last performers with a classic "showbiz" voice. He could day almost anything and make me laugh.

I remember Phil best from the movie Jingle All The Way, simply because that's what I grew up watching during the holidays. His character as Arnie's neighbor was and is still one of my favorite roles from that film. Everything he did had charisma behind it. Sad to see his life taken so early in his career.

I *WILL* remember him from such spectacular performances as Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure from The Simpsons. His death and subsequent writing out of his characters marked the beginning of the end of the show's glory days. Edit: He was also the air conditioner in "The Brave Little Toaster" too? Oh man, that was a fantastic performance.

I cant believe Phil Hartman was in the 'Brave Little Toaster' and 'Dennis the Menace'. I loved both of those as a kid and later was a huge fan of him on SNL and Newsradio. To know he was involved in those shows from my childhood makes me want to cry tears of joy.

It Impossible I to forget Phil Hartman no matter how passage of foolish years, he also part of my childhood in 90s. He was George Wilson from Dennis the Menace , he was Calaboose Cal from Tom and Jerry Kids Show, he was Paddywhack from Darkwing Duck, Hanging Lamp, Air Conditioner from The Brave Little Toaster, he was Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service and many characters. I still miss him, I was very shocked and so sad when I learned of his gone in 2000s. He was a wonderful man and his gone was tragedy to me and to everyone.

When I was younger, I started many a weekday with Dennis the Menace. Phil voiced about half the characters! Then with the weekend, I would see him on SNL. It's truly a shame that he is gone.

I've heard through Joe Rogan's podcast, who worked with Phil on News Radio for many years and was a close friend, that Phil didn't divorce his wife, despite the marriage being toxic and eventually she shot him in his sleep, was because he wanted to maintain his family appeal, his brand. I didn't understand what he meant until I saw how many kids shows on CartoonNetwork, Disney and Hana Barbera he voiced for; makes sense now in a way, but such a shame

Saturday morning rewind you have paid a great tribute to a brilliant man Phil Newman was an amazing voice actor and live action actor I remember them from such films as jingle all the way and Small Soldiers.
