I mean, they had to know players would be super confused by this thing. It should always be about the sound but after watching Russ Miller try to stumble through how to adjust this thing, doesn't seem to be too convenient out at a gig. I see this program lasting a year.
It's attached to the bottom lugs on the tom. It's a great idea for sure. the only problem is you kind of have to buy Mapex Drums, which aren't my favorite. It would be nice if there was a way to retrofit to other brands of drums and you can use their mounting system with other brands.
Hey Russ what's up fella, I love watching you discover the technical dynamics The beauty of the system once you come to understand what a leap this is in Studio Sound(not to mention muffling characteristics that are nothing short of Brilliant) I would endorse these in a hot second. I saw your other video at Sweetwater as well mate. I didn't have to dig far to put my engineer on point to get me this system. Thanks for the Vid ~ Your Future looking accomplice Scott♠
I thing I've always liked about my older Saturn Series kit circa 2010 are the suspended floor toms. I hate floor tom legs and prefer to set them up on my side rack in the same position night after night. Nice to see that concept returning with the MAATS mount accepting up to an 18" tom.
Holy crap. I thought this was a parody video at first when I saw how HUGE these mounts were! I don't think an increase in sustain (no matter how significant) would be worth using those beasts. LOL
I was really hoping that the drum would be suspended in a magnetic field with nothing touching it! That design would probably wreak havoc on the mics though.
I have one. it's not as bad in person as you think. Totally over engineered. the main issue is that you have to have a cymbal stand with a 1" diameter lower section and them a mystery diameter top section. you'll need a mapex stand if you don't have one. the HALO system on the evolution drums is much better i think.
To all those people skeptical about the mounting system, try it first before coming to conclusion. Also I'm not in any way, shape or form saying that I like the mounting system. It's just a matter of trying it out.
The system chokes the resonant side of the drum. Should have been placed on the batter side lugs. As long as there is gravity, weight and physics still apply to toms no matter the isolation.
Not true. A lot of systems and drummers are using the bottom part. I woudl even say it chockes less as a regular rims type of mount puts all the pressure on the top rim which affects the batter head even more. Also this hangs from the (center part of the) lug, so no heads or even rods are touched, compared to other systems that do hang from rods.
I would never want to gig that thing. Big, big, big. My rig just went in the opposite direction. I gig with Yamaha Crosstown hardware, and my rack Tom rings like a bell on the standard Yamaha mount. I play mostly 60s-80s pop music, so it’s almost all kick and snare anyway.
I'm sorry Mapex but you CANNOT be serious. This is just laughable. What regularly gigging drummer would ever want to haul these things around? About 85% of the drum sound is the drum head, therefore a very big reason why people choose the drums they do is cosmetics. Who the hell will see these and say "yes, that's the look I want to go for and I'd love to carry all that extra weight around"?? They are so big and ugly, and heavy I imagine. If you think this is what people are looking for when buying drums then I'm sorry but you have completely lost touch with reality. Here are some more comments I have on the video: 1:46 NO ONE wants to worry about having an Allen key on a gig. This is over-engineering to the point where your average drummer will be alienated instantly. 2:48 Honestly, I'd much rather have the feel of the drum be affected by dampening than have the audience have to look at those tom holders. As an audience member, I'd rather the tom's feel be affected than have to look at these holders. The audience doesn't care what the tom's feel is like but they know when they see something ugly. 3:10 Again, who's going to want to deal with adjusting the holder to the correct weight of the tom? Drummers have enough to worry about already. This will alienate about 95% of drummers. 4:21 If Mapex is so confident about these tom holders being great, then why is there no mention of them anywhere on their tom holders or multi-stands pages on their official website?? mapexdrums.com/us/products/drums/accessories/tom-holders mapexdrums.com/us/products/drums/hardware/multi-stands 4:56 If Russ Miller loves these tom holders so much then why is it that since this video he took them off his own Design Lab kit and replaced them with rim mounts?... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7YY37NopVJQ.html&feature=emb_logo I like innovation but not at the sacrifice of practicality. These tom holders would cause far more problems than they would solve for your average drummer and even for many professional drummers. I can't believe Mapex has their head so far up their ass that they can't see that. I hope they learn from this.
