Maple Leaf Rag - 3 Pianos on Fire

The final performance of the "3 Pianos on Fire" set was perhaps the most famous of all rags, Scott Joplin's second published rag, and the first he had published by John Stark & Son. The publication of this in 1899 also was landmark in that the contract granted Joplin royalties on the sales, when the standard at the time was for composers to sell their tunes outright for a one-time fee.
The rag is traditionally used as a show-off piece, and that's certainly how it's done here, with the pianos definitely "on fire" by the end.
Left to right are Tom Brier, Patrick Aranda, and Frederick Hodges.

As someone who has played a duet with two of the three individuals here, they are all experts at dueling pianos, Tom’s magical ability to follow anyone and is always down for change and surprises, and Frederick’s lovely double octave fills between the melodies, this is what ragtime is all about!

Hello. I'm very curious about how or who the arrangement came about. Listening carefully, most of it seems to be through-composed, including the five (+1) iterations of the B strain. Or maybe they've all just done it together enough to have it approximately figured out. Still, it seems to me more organized than that. Thank you!

I'm from Italy and I was impressed by Tom Brier's skills when I first listened to him play thanks to this Channel. I was 13. This RU-vid channel made Tom famous. However, watching this video now (for the 20th time maybe) makes me realise how talented the other two pianisis are. If someone of you ever reads this comment, please keep in mind I admire all of you. Ragtime is my top 1 music genre, and you perform it way too well. Nevertheless, I'm still in pain today for Tom. His accident definitely made my life sadder. 7 years later, I still shake when I think about that. God bless Tom and all of the artists/friends around him.

A lot of people focus on the "it is never right to play ragtime fast" that Joplin put on later rags, or they focus on the "slow" in "slow march tempo" without thinking of the "march" part. The early cakewalk and string-band recordings of ragtime were at quite a quick tempo, thus Joplin's "fast" was relative to music of the time. Joplin's "moderato" sounds fast to today's ears not accustomed to stuff like Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay or the Orpheus Overture that were so popular in his time.

100-120 is medium to fast. (Consider that most rags are written in 2/4, thus a quarter note is one beat.) I've heard John Stark's son E.J. Stark quoted as saying that 100 was considered a good "default" tempo to play a rag.
@PiotrBarcz

I can agree with E. J. Stark, 100 bpm is a pretty decent tempo for ragtime, nice and fast but not TOO fast.

Say "1, 2, 1, 2" or "left, right, left, right" like a drill sergeant on the beats. Sounds like the tempo used to get soldiers to march, doesn't it? The rag is marked "tempo di marcia" (march tempo). If you can march to it, it's a march tempo. So while this is a somewhat quick march tempo, it's still "march tempo" as Joplin indicated. Joplin's best friends were really hot piano players, so he undoubtedly heard and didn't mind this rag at a tempo like this.
