I filmed this while helping my father make maple syrup in the Adirondack mountains of New York.
Making maple syrup is hard work. It can take several days to tap all of the trees. First the drilling, then hammering in the spiles. In the video buckets are hung from the spiles to collect the sap that flows from the maples, but most people run tubes now.
If tubes are used the sap runs downhill through the tube to a tank that collects it. If buckets are used, then they need to be checked every day, and emptied.
After the sap has been collected it is boiled down using an evaporator. When the sap has a sugar content of 67% it is considered maple syrup. This process is time consuming, and involves preparing the previous year by cutting large amount of firewood to fuel the evaporator.
the sugar content of the syrup it tested with a hydrometer. The hydrometer will only float after enough water has been boiled off.

Here’s to the best video ever made. Spent many days during my early childhood, in a wood fired sap house. Amber years were the best.

This brought back a few memories. Reminds me of when I made maple syrup in sleep-away camp. That was definitely a big deal for this kid from the projects of New York. Good show.

In 1970s Pennsylvania, John Denver songs and Laura Ingles Wilder books had become all the rage, and for some reason the Maple Syrup stories stuck in my mind.

Awesome video!! That’s why the pure stuff is so expensive bc what it takes to make the syrup. I always buy the natural stuff for many reasons not just bc it tastes better but you’re supporting the mom and pop.

Thanks Christian, I appreciate it. Glad to hear you always buy natural... there are still a lot of folks who depend on maple sap to make their living
