I worked the motor pool for the Mercedes Cup when Safin was there, and drove him a couple times. This was after they announced the Dunlop sponsorship and Safin’s career seemed to go into the tank. I took a chance and asked him why he’d made the switch. He gave me that classic fatalistic Russian shrug and said, “For the money.”

Marat was awesome....it wasn't just his game, which I loved, but he had personality, which generally endeared him the the public. Sure he had a temper, but he also had humour and he was articulate. One of the greats for sure! Really loved this video Jonas, one of your best for sure. Thank you for bringing this to us. 🙏

When I was younger, it was him and James Blake I wanted to watch play. Yin and yang personalities on the court but such big hitters. I think if Marats career had started 10 years later with where sports medicine has gone, he could've really competed for a number of years past what he did. Sad day when he called it quits

Prestige Classic was such a great frame. The Muscle Weave and Hot melts were good, too, but the Prestige had such a nice feel.

@@Tennisnerd What would you say is the best modern racquet that I can buy new today that most closely matches the contact and swing feel of the prestige mids? I tried the modern prestige 95 and it feels so different from the prestige mid that I've been using, which I can't find a replacement for easily.

I’ve tried everything and nothing compares to the I.prestige mid at 354 grams with Alu power 23/22. Don’t look for a new racket if you play like Safin used to. That’s what I do

Wow, mod size Racquet. A rare breed indeed. I have IG Prestige MP and I love it. Haven't played with mid though which is not 93 but 89 sq inch 😊

Thanks for the review. One of my favorite player 👍🏻 One of the best racket smasher.😁 Hope he will be coaching someone. Still wondering how could these guys play with 89 or 90 sq.in rackets those days. I'd never tried below 95.

Aah the Prestige...I have a Prestige 600 MP which was my first racket and used it until 5 years ago! Now I have 2 IG Youtek Prestige MP and the latest one. Favourite is the IG.

Always loved watching Safin play. Exceptional talent, superb athlete, massive power on serve and groundies off both wings. One of only 2 players I ever saw manage to overpower Sampras (the other being Krajicek). It’s inexplicable how he won just two majors! Hard to believe you mentioned him beating Hewitt in the AO 2005 final when the standout match from that tournament was his semi against world No.1 and defending champ Federer. An epic match where Safin came back from match point down in the 4th set to prevail 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, 9-7, which also ended Fed’s run at the “Roger” slam. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-onTenziaRio.html

So Head prestige classic 600 from 1997-2000, then didn't he use another racquet in 2001 before the Dunlop? Also he had it painted to look like Dunlop from later in 2001 which he used until 2003? From 2003 up until 2006 he used the head prestige liquid metal racquet? And then another head prestige racquet from 2007-2009?

Safin did play with a Dunlop racquet for a very short time in 2001 (it was an attempted PT10 clone by Dunlop that was painted as a muscle weave - it was 90 sq inches which the MW was never commercially made in that size), but Safin couldn’t get used to it. Thats when he reverted back to using the PT10 with a MW paint job. The CAP grommets were a dead give away, though ha!

Thanks! I think Lucas has a great game, but something has been blocking him for the last few years. Perhaps it’s a mental thing. I haven’t seen him play with the Pure Drive enough to compare it to the Prince - but I don’t think the racquet is his issue in general.

At 2:28 you say Big Banger Original, but then at 2:38 it says Big Banger Alu Power and you repeat that later in the video as well. So which one is it? Looks like original to me, it's brownish, not silver.

For most of his pro career it was a Yonex Super RD Tour 90 with various paintjobs. I think he actually switched to something else in the latter part of his time on the pro tour though.

Safin exclusively used the head prestige classic. It was a 90 head size.
