Norm Macdonald may have been a better Burt Reynolds than Burt Reynolds. Haha. I miss his Bob Dole also. The SNL Real World skit was great. "Who ate Bob Doles peanut butter? Bob Dole paid for this peanut butter."
David Philips i know! if you really think about it, he pulled a full force overhand right slap to marks face, which could’ve EEASILY broken his nose flat!
True. Burt was overly insecure and fragile. There was a lot Marc could have done here to embarrass Burt too... knock off his toupee, comment on his fake teeth, or the fact that he wears huge lifts inside his already high-heeled boots (back to back you can see that without the lifts, Burt and Marc would probably be the same height, Marc might even be slightly taller). He handled it like a good sport
Summers definitely screwed himself by turning around opposite his throwing arm, he could barely even keep the pie from falling out of his hands while Burt swung his around like a major league pitcher😂 Still have to respect Summers chin though😂
@@jungxehuin9404 I wasn't a fan of his tonight show, however Jay Lenos early stand up was absolutely masterful which pretty much every notable comedian state themselves also. Leno stand up in the late 80s + his interviews on carson and letterman were awesome.
“Who the better man is” really shows when they hugged afterwards. They BOTH had the capacity to set things right. A gentleman shouldn’t brawl, but after a fight - shake hands, buy a round of drinks and realize you are all human & everyone has things to learn/deal with.
I got to meet Burt at a convention in 2015. he was a very polite and friendly guy. Threw me for a loop how down to earth he was. Plus I was standing in line when Adrienne Barbeau came to greet him. Gal still got it, yowza!
Marc was a good sport, but he really seemed more mad than anything else. I would've realized how great it was that Burt was mad at me in the first place.
It didn't really - you don't mention a divorce in a demeaning way, like he did, without knowing the person... It was all superficial, before the nerd felt it too much and went overboard with his comments. Nasty. Don't go into private life. It's entertainment... Still - the nerd was insecure enough to attack others about his own job... Really disgusting humanbeing.
@@makinbacongreasyagain968 I agree with that too, but only one person got personal really fast... Wife... Job... It was all public and he went for it to increase his own fame. Burt shouldn't be there and should know better, but still... No way to treat a man. If you do, you're bound to get in trouble
I haven't seen it, but I hear Jay was really going to town on Burt over his divorce, his financial problems etc. So he was already in a bad mood when Marc poked at him some more.
In the Maron interview I sensed Summers was a bitter man who watched many that he came up with make it while he got food thrown at him by kids. Quotes like Andy Kaufman had no talent, the true anti-semites in the Biz are the Jews, Mitzi Shores slept with all her stars, Soupy Sales had $ problems, etc all came from a man steeped in frustration and jealousy. Dude was simply not funny, too rehearsed in his demeanor…and when he ran out of material he decided to shame his parents by becoming spokesman for OCD…gotta give him points for resilience, but he should have stayed in family’s grocery biz
I just got finished reading Marc Summers' book on OCD and just HAD to look up this clip - thank goodness it's online! Seeing this was so hilarious - what a crazy experience for Marc :o
After he deflected Marc's first attempt to throw water on him, knocking it on to Jay😂 It was like he was straight up playing Nick Escalante in real life😂
Yeap. Instead today what do we have? Two folks hitting at each other for real and holding a grudge forever over NOTHING at an Oscar and late night shows that are nothing but liberal political propaganda BS and NO FUN whatsoever. America is doomed!
had the nerve? your clueless kid lol its called showing "theres no hard feelings", even burt said he had it coming after marc threw water on him.. burt is a legend, marc is still forgotten about by everyone
World Peace should be achieved this way. Thrown drinks and a pie fight. It's so beautiful. Burt Reynolds is super masculine and Mark Summers is a kids' game show host. This is how it SHOULD end. Pies in the faces and hugs. It's cute, it's funny, it is a story no one has ever told before.
I don't see why so many comments are taking one guy's side or the other. Look, NO ONE is perfect and that really came out in this episode. But the fact that it culminated in a freaking pie fight on the Tonight Show is awesome. Perhaps a jacket or tie was ruined, but from this moment forth all of these guys and their audience had a story for life. RIP Burt Reynolds
Nothing a simple good dry laundering can't fix. They had fun and buried the hatches quickly and all we have left are good memories. Compare that to the Will Smith vs Chris Rock Drama the other night! What a contrast!
That was Freaking Comedy, Late Night Gold There!!! God bless you in Heaven, Burt Reynolds... :) 😊😊😊😉🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😎😎😎😎👍👍👍👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷
Marc was on Clubhouse app last night talking about this. Apparently, Jay wasn't going to do the pie bit because he thought it was beneath the show. The back and forth with the water throwing prompted him to change his mind. He mentioned that you can see Jay ask a producer for the pies. (3:20-3:30)
Burt even older could of kicked the crap out of him. You can see the athleticism his reaction times are so much faster. Kudos to Burt not to just knock him out
Burt was grumpy going in because he'd already given up drugs and alcohol mostly, while Jay and Summers were probably cutting up lines in the rehearsal room. Gotta love the old days of late night tv! 😂 RIP Burt
At the 2:18 point, you see Marc begin to reach for the mug on the little table and then he hesitates. He obviously did what he initially wanted to do there in the following minutes and got a standing ovation from the audience for it.
The reason he hesitates is because Nick Escalante aka Burt Reynolds is staring right at him, daring him to try it, but Marc knows better, so he waits for a better moment till he knows Burt isn't paying attention.
@@Rick-the-Swift Of course everything's relative, but cruelty isn't normal, it's just something we excuse looking at the way of nature's other animals. It would take one generation raised correctly to make violence unthinkable. 1 Generation raised completely in a peace bubble, devoid of competition and any incivility and then the rest of the planet drinks poison, and nature corrected. It's not so unchangeable and the cycle needn't be carried on.
And for those of you that realize this is another one of Burt's ongoing gags involved with whipped cream...See clips from 1974 on up til Johnny Carson's retirement.
Yeah his legacy how about the last night he was at Inger Stevens home rough her up, April 29, 1970 and the next day she committed suicide! Don’t forget the marks on Ingers body! Reynolds FU
Burt only hit Marc in the face twice. I don't understand how Marc kept his cool. I would have stepped back and thrown that mug as hard as I could right at Burt's fucking stupid face. Burt Reynolds was a fucking douche and the world is a much better place without him in it.
But then you wouldn't be here to make your little comments. You probably don't understand what I mean. Because he'd have fuckin flattened you. A douche is someone who talks bad about those no longer here. BTW - Burt will still be here long after you're never thought of.
Holy cow, I can't even believe I'm replying to your idiocy. And it's hard to type because I'm laughing so hard. Me get a life?? It's more of an insult than opinion. Yeah I'm a Burt fan. But be clear, the only dumb asses here are those who say bad about those who are gone. Have you ever lost someone? A family member - Grandparents, parents, a friend?? Maybe you're okay if I say the world's a better place without them? I doubt it. ( And be clear, I'm only stating that. Since I am far from a dumbass, I would never say that to anyone or about anybody. Just making a point ). And because I'm a fair man, you go ahead and think I'm a dumbass. Because you are entitled to your opinion.
burt was going through a rough time, with his divorce and movie career fading, he wasn't in the best of moods. Marc Summers took it like a champ, and I'm glad they both were able to settle their differences like real pros
Burt realized that he kind of overreacted by the end and was doing everything possible to be gracious. giving everybody a hug and personally signing a copy of his book for Marc.
I just heard Marc Summers' take on this episode on NPR's Bullseye with Jesse Thorn. It's a great story that Burt was actually helping Marc save face on the tonight show. Love it! ❤ Apparently, Jay Leno doesn't like card tricks. Lol!
Honestly I think this was a missed opportunity here! Producers could have developed a show or a movie around these two with Burt as the "angry straight man" and Marc as the clown whose always pissing him off, because despite the tension it was entertaining as f***k and the audience were loving it 😂
Glad to see Turd Ferguson & Marc Summers in this vintage clip. Back when men were men & boys were boys & tap water was icy cold & children's Tylenol was for babies.
Burt did not hold back..that was more than a pie in the face, there was an open fist behind that plate..wow, I remember seeing this that night, when Mark made that comment about being "still married" I knew he was in for it...that was freaking wild...I bet Carrot Top was pissed!
Burt Reynolds’ massive ego needed to be deflated a bit here. He was a jerk to him for no reason, but Summers certainly came at him with a howitzer with that “I’m still married” remark!
I never knew this happened. I was 12 years old when this happened, and watching this for the first time just pissed off my inner child 😂 Marc was my guy as a child. I thought he had the best job ever growing up
