Storyboard comparison . I boarded and co-directed this with Jon Yeo
Axis Studios is back with a new Magic: The Gathering cinematic trailer with long-term partner Wizards of the Coast.
Magic: The Gathering - March of the Machine brings the Phyrexian arc to an end as those who remain band together for one final battle.
The 10th cinematic trailer created in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, the team were tasked with visualising Elesh Norn's Phyrexian invasion of realms, the downfall of Karn at her hands, and the return of the reborn Elspeth. An exciting set of characters within a relatively abstract and strange environment, the trailer is a balance between elegance and horror.
Congrats to all the team involved, including Director Jon Yeo, Co-Director Paul Coulthard, Executive Producer Laura Yeo, Supervising Producer Alvaro Montenegro, Producer Olga Kotas, CG Supervisor Vania Alban Zapata and Art Director Gareth Hector.

Amazing! Was Blender used for most/all of this?

The 3D blockout and cameras yes. The 2d was done afterward. For speed

Great drawings and layout, beautiful board. The CGI was great also, though I think your exacting composition, eyelines and angles should have been adhered to in the final piece much more closely, for 'all' the reasons.

Thank you. t's a flexible process. I co directed the cinematic and so I was definitely pushing toward the boards alot, but as things move and develop we need to respond to each stage. 3d offers up new possibilities to explore and tweak. It's a fun process

This is amazing, the fidelity to your boards is really high. What was the workflow here? Was this done with grease pencil or did you just take stills from the environment to then load into a drawing program? I am working on a project that uses blender and unreal engine for the final product and am trying to figure out the best suited workflow. Thanks in advance

Thanks. For this particular project I on,y used blender for the staging and cameras. So yes I then exported the frames from blender and drew up the 2d characters ion top in sbpro. I love grease pencil, but when working professionally I sometimes need to move too quickly to use it. I’m still faster in sbpro .if u are using unreal, check out the epos, Iliad addons for unreal 5. It’s like grease pencil but in unreal.

@@SpitfireStoryboards Yeah, the issue I have with Grease Pencil is that it can't beat storyboard pro in terms of speed. The most amount of pages of script I've boarded in a day was 5, and I can't imagine doing anything remotely that fast with grease pencil.

@@bloopboop9320 yeh, once we are in 3D it’s hard to avoid that extra bloat of technical interaction.

@@SpitfireStoryboards I've found that once I get into Blender that I start spending waaaaay too much time on making precise camera moves and trying to make it feel good only to spend 15 minutes on the drawings haha.

@bloopboop9320 yeh . For me it's the timing. Once I'm in blender I start staying ti get all the timing right even though it'll all get retimed afterward ...
