I think Bitter Reunion is one of the best cards they've printed in YEARS. It's just a lowly common and I have put it in almost every red commander deck I have. And I only say almost because I didn't have enough copies to put in all of them.

Slime foot and squee is definitely going in my henzie blitz deck. You don’t get the blitz cost reduction but you get 2 saprolings get to sac it to get it in the graveyard and draw a card. Look at the value! Haha

Zimone and Dina has been a joy to build. There is so much redundancy in the effects that they want that the deck doesn't feel like it builds itself. For example you can run 8 of each effect with some card draw and still inact your game plan consistently. Or you can run the best 3-4 of each effect and a stack of tutors if you want to power up your list.

I'm doing a land-turn-into-creatures Horde of Notions. Not really focusing on the grave part of it, though by happen stance most land based stuff are elemental. Use the bridges and creatures that give lands counters. Sac lands that happen to be creatures to get things like a grave pact to proc.

Slimefoot and Squee are so easy to go infinite that you don't even really need the Phyrexian altar, depending on what you're bringing back. All you need is a creature that on etb/dying gets you 2 mana with a sac outlet that's free and can give you mana, which could also be a Skirk Prospector or a Thermopod. There are A LOT of different card combos that'll get you there, which means that if you build it like a combo deck you can get there really easily.

I feel like it would have been worth it for the ones not mentioned to just throw them up on screen and give a twenty second explanation for each why they weren't given a deep dive. Even just showing them when they were saying they were gonna leave some out.

Zurgo and Ojutai's trigger is "one or more dragons" so it doesn't count each individual dragon. I think that it could be a powerful control deck just from the consistent card advantage you get by casting it every turn with stuff like Candlekeep Librarian, Defiler of Truth, Kindred Discovery (a card that works as well if not better in the dragon tribal version) and stuff like that.

Yargle and Multani has reminded me of one thing I thought strange coming in from YuGiOh; The lack of Vanilla centric strategies. Some of the scariest things at some point in the metta was things that would let you cheat in, tutor or do crazy things but they would only look for "Normal Monsters" the vanillas of that game. Considering there's so many old things in the game that have no abilities I think it would be a cool way to get some extra life out of some classics if you could do something whacky like all Vanillas get protection from non-vanilla creatures.

I have had slimefoot & squee built for 3 weeks now (with only the commander proxied) and I will say, you need other things that make saporlings in your deck. Sprouting thrinax & tukatongue thallid being some of the most consistent.

A marvelous romp through the fun that is to come, well done as usual. I've got my Yargle and Multani deck ready to go, just waiting on the commander card. Rankle and Torbran seem like so much fun, particularly the thought of them marauding against the Phyrexians, I might have to build them as well. I do like the thought of Zurgo and Ojutai simply to have a use for Adult Gold Dragon and friends in a place that might make good use for them.

Minor quibble, but the magic number for Kroxa and Kuronos is six cards in the graveyard, not five. You need to have something left to reanimate after exiling the five to "pay" for the ability.

My Thalia and the Gitrog monster include some "keyword matter" cards. First strike and Deathtouch are super strong. Add vigilance and / or trample and you just kik it up a bunch. Witch Odrik and the token that landfall let you get and you have something very interesting!

It is true that the precons are part of the overall set. However, the command zone tends to separate out discussions of precon cards from discussion of cards that are not in the precons.

Thalia and The Gitrog Monster is a gamechanger for Abzan. They started off this year as the least popular color identity among 3 & 2 color pairs. Much like Propser was for Rakdos, it is the Golosmander of Abzan and will hopefully be just the beginning of their upward trajectory this year.

@Victor Bourguignon Myrkul really isn't the type of commander that can fill this role. It's interesting for what it is, but it's rise to the top of Abzan is really just because of how daft the pool of new options has been for them these past few years. It's much more like the Yurlok of Abzan than it is a resurgence for the color identity.

Ruthless Technomancer plus academy manufacturer would make 36 sacrificial artifacts and 18 treasures. 3 treasure mana and 18 of the sacrificial artifacts to get back Y&M, 4 treasure mana for Sabertooth, 2 treasure mana to bounce the Ruthless Technomancer, 3 treasure mana to recast it. You spent 12 treasures for mana to do this loop but got 18. And you have 18 Food or Clues, so infinite life and draw your deck. It's a 4 card combo, but if you sacrifice Y&M to draw cards equal to power two or three times and you can easily just stumble into the combo. And because all the pieces are creatures, recursion and tutors can make it a bit consistent.

I'm already building Zimone and Dina. When I saw them revealed, I fell in love immediately. I just want to durdle around drawing some cards, playing some lands, and churning some moderate value. Not going fully competitive with it. Just something to easily say "I did the thing" and not have to care about interacting with the board too much. Let me draw my cards and have a good time :)

Much as I love your work, you did *not* do thorough research with Slimefoot and Squee. It goes infinite with a card called Sprouting Thrinax, from Shards of Alara, as well as Phyrexian Altar. You cast your commander, make a saproling. You sac the thrinax to the altar, making three more saprolings and a mana of any color. You sac your commander and three of your now four saprolings to make five mana total, spending four of it to bring back your commander and thrinax. Rinse and repeat until you have infinite mana. You also get infinite creatures by sacrificing two saprolings instead of three, breaking even on mana but netting one creature each time.

Slimefoot & Squee have infinites wiith cards like Bloodspore Thrinax (which makes 3 saprolings on etb), Siege Gang Commander (3 goblins), and many others w/Phyrexian Altar, as well as Dockside as long as you can make 4 treasures and you have a free sac outlet... I feel like the infinites potential with them was completely missed in your evaluation... you didn't seem to think infinites were possible at all when they VERY MUCH are. Naya Dragons came out with Rith, Liberated Primeval just a few sets ago, so there's that option for dragons with white as well! I built that one around earthquake effects with loads of dragons and tribal support.

If you could untap Quintorius, you could sacrifice a spirit for Worldfire and then do it again for Delayed Blast Fireball, letting you just KO the table in a single turn. It's a bit telegraphed though.

Slimefoot and Squee can go infinite with Avenger of Zendikar and Phyrexian Altar, as long as you have 3 or more lands you reanimate S&S alongside Avenger of Zendikar, which creates 3 plant tokens and 1 saproling token. Then you sacrifice 2 plants, Avenger and S&S to pay for S&S ability. You're up 1 plant token each time you do this, and that's with the minimum of 3 lands, imagine that with 8 lands and Impact Tremors.

Question don't we have to choose our target with Kroxa and Kunoros' 'return target creature card from your graveyard when we put the 'may exile five cards from your graveyard' on the stack? so it can't go infinite with itself and Alter? Not suggesting that it's not powerful though.

It works because K&K's trigger is a "Reflexive Trigger." Reflexive Triggers resolve like this: First they have an optional cost you can pay to continue the effect. in K&K's case, it's exiling five cards when it ETBs or attacks. This first half of the ability goes on the stack and can be responded to. This gives you the opportunity to sac it to Altar of Dementia and mill six cards. Now you go to resolve the trigger, and you exile the five cards. This then puts a second trigger on the stack that's the second half of the ability. At this point, you're able to target K&K with the ability, since they're in the graveyard now. You can spot a Reflexive Trigger pretty easily, because they will always say "When you do, " in the text for the ability.

If the ability said something like "When Kroxas and Kunoros enters the battlefield or attacks, you may exile five cards from your graveyard, then return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield", you'd be correct that the trick with Altar of Dementia wouldn't work, because K&K wouldn't be able to see itself going to the graveyard in time to be the target.

Many of these commanders are "where I'll put those loose cards I got here and there and it becomes a deck". Abzan landfall and stuff? Sure, slap some cards in there, should be good enough. Monogreen stomp? Yeah I got cards that didn't fit other green decks so I can build yet another one and it should be good enough. Boros spirits? Yeah I got some leftovers, let's pile it up and play!

Are you sure the K and K + Altar combo works? The creature card that is returned is targeted, which typically means you have to have a target when the etb is placed on the stack.

Because it says "when you do", it's what's referred to as a reflexive trigger, triggered by exiling 5 cards from your graveyard. the target isn't chosen until you decide to exile the 5. if it said "if you do" instead, you'd have to have a target in advance.

Yea I thought it didn’t work but it is a reflexive trigger so the target only needs to be declared after the payment, not when it gets put on the stack.

It’s once for each player hit with a dragon, so max 3. But if you can swarm with faerie dragons, you can kinda guarantee the trigger, so going wide is good.

I am confused why they did not partner Quintorius with Killian, who was also a important chracter in Strixhaven and would make a really cool Mardu commander.The Killian part could be that other spells or abilities that target a permanents you control cost 2 less. To balace this out, take out the "put the exile card back into the library" part. One way I see that type of commander is a Mardu enchantment deck.
