Under Marcus Aurelius’s rule, the empire thrived despite the economic crises, the numerous invasions and the gruelling pandemic. It is precisely during times of distress that true leaders are tested, and the Caesar rose to the occasion every single time. Aurelius was a philosopher before anything else. Regarded as the last of the Five Good Emperors of Ancient Rome, a term coined by Niccolo Machiavelli in the 15th century, it was his Stoic philosophy that differentiated him from his predecessors.

10 Ways to Be More Stoic: 1.) Transform everyone into a teacher. 2.) Say no to the easy way, seek out challenges. 3.). Be strict with yourself but tolerant of others. 4.) Allow the journey to be the thing. 5.) Transform envy into emulation. 6.) Stand on the shoulders of giants. 7.) Forgive yourself and forgive others. 8.) Fall in love with Fate. 9.) Always practice courage, temperance, and humor. 10.) Remember, the obstacle is the path.

Things I learned from this video: 1. You have a choice whether to be angry or calm, it is up to you what you choose. 2. The best revenge is not to be your enemy. It's when you deal vice with virtue that makes you a Stoic philosopher. 3. See obstacles as an opportunity to practice virtue, when someone insults you, you practice self-control, patience, as well as kindness. The obstacle is the way. 4. Love thy fate. This is not misfortune, but to bear this nobly is good fortune. It's about accepting that you can't control what life gives you, so might as well accept it with virtue. 5. Death smiles at us all, but all a man can do is smile back. Dying is inevitable, so I might as well face it with a joyful character.

I finished reading "meditations" last night, and most of the book was about how we should accept our fate and surrend ourselves to whatever nature and gods have planned for us, which I don't agree with cause I don't believe in any of those things. I wouldn't say that the true testament to being a stoic lies in wanting nothing to be different. Stoicism doesn't discourage ambition. The true testament is to allow yourself to want things to be different, but being indifferent about whether it actually changes or not. Have ambition but also be gratified by where you are now and will be in the future.

I'm currently pretty much in a situation of 'it is what it is'. I wanted things to go a little differently and my mentality most of all, I'm not going to say what exactly. I think it's true you can choose your perception on things but I also believe there is a limit to that. Like for example you are in a depression and your emotions and instincts have taken over your rational thinking which causes you to see things in a way which is counter-productive etc... But if your brain and mentality changes you can look back at things as if it never happened, or happened in a slightly different way. I quess it is the wonders of our memories. Always in flux with new experiences and situations.

It’s not like it can happen any other way now, so what purpose does the wish serve?

I disagree with the notion that wise acts are emotionally-detached. Rather, the combined efforts of logical thinking and emotion. After all, if we had no emotions, then we be bacteria. But even bacteria makes decisions based on what happens to it. Also, I disagree with loving ones fate to some degree, since it's an excuse for not improving the self. We should be thankful for the things we have now that we are thankful for (just spend time to thank it).
