Maria Island has all the elements to make for a spectacular outdoor encounter - abundant wildlife, historical ruins, traces of various communities - indigenous, convicts, 19th c. businesses - geological wonders and sweeping views.
It's a 30-minute ferry ride from Triabunna, located north-east of Port Arthur (or about one third of the way up Tasmania's East Coast from its southern tip). The island serves as a Noah's Ark for replenishing wildlife populations on the Tasmanian mainland - wombats, wallabies, forester kangaroos, Cape Barren geese and a tumour free population of Tassie Devils.
For those that have a fascination for earth and its origins you won't want to miss the fossil and painted cliffs. I did, which is contradictory but hiking to the bishop and clerk while documenting the journey introduced some limitations.
