That's a really good point. They had some great matches too. I remember the 2015 Aussie Open final in particular, Sharapova really clung on during that second set, and it looked liek she could potentially be turnnig things around but Serena just managed to close it out.

also they are considered rivale not because of the h2h, but look at all these matches, always in late stages of tournaments or in finals. they always versed for the title and often serena was eventual champion when she beat maria. thats why they are rivals, they were competing for the same titles for 15 years

Exactly. As for the h2h, what player wasn’t dominated by Serena during those years?? Even Venus, who has won the most matches against Serena, has a losing h2h. The fact that Maria played Serena so many times in key moments proves that she was one of the best players in her generation.

@@adaml3817 I truly believe Maria would have won. She was unstoppable before the shoulder injury and with her Prince racket. I have both rackets and that Prince white o3 really packs a punch. The Head definitely not. Maybe easier on the shoulder. Not sure. Just not nearly the same

I agree. I think it goes back to the 2004 YEC. Serena was hurt but winning off the ground and Maria realized then you have to close Serena out or she can still just hit her way to winning. I think that got in her head in 05 AO and after 07 AO and 07 Miami she no longer believed she could beat Serena.
