This series was well done. Bien joué! It hurts me to hear how many needless indignities she was made to suffer. I am glad she was given a decent burial 30 years later. It's a good example to not accept everything that is said about others.

I personally feel very bad for her too. She wasn’t nearly as bad as she was made out to be... she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time in history... thank you for watching and commenting again Barbara, I really appreciate your kindness !

A well done video of Marie Antionette. I became interested in her when I was a teenager after reading a historical novel from the library and have been fascinated ever since. I am American so I really didn’t know much of anything about her or the French Revolution until I started getting as many books as I could find about her. I see her as such a tragic figure all due to the politics and the way rulers were chosen in the past. I think she was hated way more than she deserved because she was so naive in the knowledge of how the average and poor lived. I think she was good hearted in spite her faults. Thank you for a very accurate and informative video.

I just watched this again and yes, she was humiliated and treated cruelly at the end - especially having the head of the Princesse de Lamballes held up on a pike in front of her. For people of British and British Colonial descent the hatred the French unleashed against their monarchy, the aristocracy and the church often seems so outlandish and so savage. But we forget - and historically we never experienced - what absolutism meant for the common people. Taxed mercilessly by the state, tithed mercilessly by the church while the nobles and the clerics lived lives of luxury. Most of us don't even know that up to the revolution a common punishment for a trifling offence was to be sent to the galleys. The French had a huge fleet of galleys in the Med, rowed by thousands of condemned prisoners until they died. It's human to say, "How cruelly they treated her", but it's more honest to say "How cruelly the power structure, with her and her husband at the top, treated their own people". The Latin phrase, 'sic semper tyrannis' is apt - 'thus, always, to tyrants'. She got what she deserved, as did Nicholas and Alexandra and their family, Muammar Ghadaffi, Saddam Hussein and the Ceaucescus.

I have a book called From Marie-Antoinettes Garden: An Eighteenth-Century Horticultural Album, which has a tender but sad story of how a note was snuggled into a posse of flowers into her prison to lend a hand in her escape, the guard apparently led her to the gate and got cold feet last minute and returned her to her cell what a terrible sense that must’ve felt but based on what we know she would’ve never consented to leaving with a hint of leaving her children behind with those monsters in the concierge or the temple prisons

I don’t think the word horrible is the right word to use here. She did commit treason as the wife of the sovereign. She knowingly and willingly gave information on French troop movements to the Austrians as well as acted unconstitutionally to the constitution which she and her husband signed. Marie and Louis Capet committed crimes against the French Republic and should have been executed for treason as any person who committed treason would receive. The Bourbons were ignorant of the times and played with the feelings of the nation and instead of standing with the French people they betrayed them in order to keep the absolute monarchy which was outdated, unfair, and unjust

Hi Mike, glad to see you again, and thank you for leaving such an insightful post about the topic. I have chosen the word ‘horrible’, as, despite whether or not they were actually guilty, the trip towards the scaffold was long and drawn out, unlike Louis’ execution... Call me cruel or heartless or a sociopath or psychopath but there's no need to pity Marie Antoinette. She caused her own downfall. All those years when she could've been a queen she was dumb blonde in the pretty dress who didn't bother to correct her mistakes when they were still reparable. When she decided to finally become a queen she decided to be the wrong kind of queen and boy did she go for it. She knew what was going on outside the gates of Versailles but chose to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the common people, and continue to party, shop and gamble as if the treasury was endlessly bursting with gold. You reap what you sow.

@@jacquesrenou2850 the part where she had sexual relations with her son was indeed a lie. But the part where she knew the truth about what was happening outside the gates of Versailles isn't a lie. Even her mother wrote to her about it several times and yet she chose to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to the common people's suffering. That is something I cannot forgive. How can you shop, party and gamble while parents were forced to watch their children die of malnutrition because they had no money to buy them milk? It's just utterly callous.

Both were martyrs and most noble french monarchs. No mercy, no logic, no justice for the royal family. Even buried with humiliation. Their son, the dauphin of France was ultimately killed in isolation. This is why french revolution was the most ruthless and brutal period of history. It pains me to think of their misery.
