What an absolutely tragic end for someone who had made the best of what could have been the worst circumstances of birth; to rise to the side of the King of France and then to be thrown like rubbish in to a mass burial pit is so sad a conclusion to what was a remarkably steep trajectory from near poverty to the Royal Court of France.

It was a shame she couldn't be advised better of the risks she faced, and make a decision to stay in London until the revolution subsided. She, not being born an aristocrat, faced the guillotine in terror, and her screams before it were said to be animalistic. The executioner was unnerved and they said hastened to end it because it was affecting the crowd, negatively. It's possible if the aristocrats did not die so courageously facing the guillotine quietly, going to their deaths bravely the guillotining may have been viewed as savage and may have ended earlier. So likely DuBarry was quickly dispatched of to end the horrific scene.

The revolution was necessary . What did you expect the starving neglected people to do? Quiet down and wait for their piece of cake? She thought more highly and greedily of her possessions back in France than she did of her own life. Bet she wished she should have stayed in merry old England after all. She and the rest of them got what was coming.

I've always really liked, been interested in, and been drawn to Jeanne (Madam Du Barry) obviously i've never met her since she passed away almost 200 years before I was even born but based on what I know about her she seemed like a really amazing woman and I can't help but admire her and the fact that she started from nothing and worked her way up to riches in the 1700's no less which was an already incredibly difficult time to be a woman coupled with the fact that she sounded like a fun person and tbh I could see her being a really good friend and us getting along amazingly if she was still alive 😊 Her brutal murder (I know she died by execution but I see it as murder) is absolutely heartbreaking especially how she rightfully reacted to it and the crazy part is she wasn't even a part of the royalty in fact she came from the same background as the people who brutally and wrongly ended her life and didn't even have anything to do with politics (just another example of evil being fought with even more evil) and it's just so sad that such a bright light was extinguished and rhad not even counting all the other people who wrongly and brutally lost their lives during that hellish time 😕 Also side note I wish there was more information about her out there I have a book about her but it seems like that book and the information in it is all that's out there about her, maybe we'll be lucky and some new info will be discovered!

She could have sold her jewelry, as I am sure that that would have afforded her a nice enough piece of property in the UK, even if not as sumptuous. But at the same time, I get it, it was her home of 15 years, and we all grow attached to our homes. Our homes are our safe havens from the world. It's hard for one to say, in hindsight, what one would have done.

I still believe she was really nice to her personal servant behind closed doors. She wasn't evil! Look at it this way, in order to be liked by the court she had to act a certain way in front of them. To look like one of them. I'm sure that also included treating her slave badly in front of them perhaps to show her status. If the nobles at court treated her badly, you can imagine how they'd treat a slave or any other servant no matter skin color! even worse. And I'm sure he was the one who threw her under the bus in order to save himself. Because he got imprissioned as well, and in order to show that he was not loyal to her, he had to do what he had to do to save himself.

At least back then society, as a whole, was far more honest. Hypocrisy is an illness of the 21st century. I know only a little about the story. As far as I read, Zamor came to Du Barry during his preteen years and lived with her at court. His experiences at court were not great, as he was being mocked and insulted at court. During the French Revolution he joined the Jacobins. However, when he was recognized as a member of Du Barry's court, Zamor was imprisoned as he was supsected to being her accomplice. After his release he remained in Paris until his death.

It's bizzare that to become the king's mistress, she had to marry someone else!! Was that just how it worked at the French court at that time- if the king wanted a single lady, he had to get her married to another man so she could be presented at court as per protocol??? I know it was different to England; being the French king's mistress was sort of an official position, so it makes sense that there'd be protocol- it just seems weird to marry specifically & only to be with someone else! (No shade; it's at least honest).
@TheKingsofFrance
@TheKingsofFrance 3 года назад
She didn't have a title, she was born a commoner. Without a title, and thus a husband, she could not be presented at court and she could not become Louis' mistress. In Versailles, in all things, etiquette needed to be followed. There was absolutely no possibility to work around what protocol dictated and hence the marriage had to take place.
@beth7935
@beth7935 3 года назад
@@TheKingsofFrance I see, thankyou! :) It was about the title, not the husband per se. I wondered if it was to avoid an unmarried woman having a child. Could an unmarried woman even have a title that would fit the bill? I kinda doubt it as all mistresses I've heard of were "Madame", & you said she had to be presented by a married man; I just wasn't sure if it meant married _to her._ And I assume a widow kept the title she'd acquired from her husband- would that be acceptable? I'm not thinking of modern views of "cheating", & I know that in Versailles there was practically protocol on how to breathe! The French, English & especially the Spanish court seem very different- it must've been very strange for women who married a foreign royal or noble.
@TheKingsofFrance
@TheKingsofFrance 3 года назад
An unmarried woman could be presented at court if she was of noble birth, a good example would be Louise De La Vallière. But commoners by birth would have to obtain a title first. A royal mistress could definitely be unmarried, she just needed the right ‘papers’. Mind though: we are not talking about the odd fling with a kitchen maid which happened quite often too, but a position at court as Maitresse En Titre. To have a place at court, a title and official.presentation was needed. Louis XV fell in love with Du Barry so it had to happen.
@beth7935
@beth7935 3 года назад
@@TheKingsofFrance Thankyou for your explanations! :) It was about noble birth, not marital status. And I'd forgotten the title for the official mistress. Your vids are brilliant & so interesting- I only really know English & Scottish royalty, so I mostly know French royalty in relation to that: "Francis I was Henry VIII's rival; Catherine de Valois married Henry V", etc. It's a start at least!
