This video is part of our online series: Remembering Julian Bream. The New York Guitar Festival invited some of our favorite artists to reflect on the life and musical legacy of the Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream, who died at his home in Wiltshire, England on August 14, 2020, at the age of 87.
Marija Temo plays, and teaches, both classical and flamenco guitar. She is also a flamenco singer and a retired flamenco dancer; her own music owes much to that style. But she’s appeared in some unusual places - a major festival of Dominican bachata music, for example, or onstage with the Zac Brown Band.
In this video, Marija performs Andaluza (Danza Espanola No. 5), by Enrique Granados.

Exiting playing. This piece is ironically is what I remember Julian Bream for more than any other, just remembered playing his collection and this piece is the one that stood out and you have more than done it justice.

Bravo Marija, Bravo I say. When the great maestro turned to us in a master class, he shared these deeply relevant thoughts. "The guitar is a very suggestive instrument indeed. When reciting, playing, anything you love, try to own it, bring it into your heart with the intention of making a part of it yours. Remember to try and seek to see the beauty of and poetry in life. And do that with purpose, to help make the world a better place than when we found it. Julian, my great master and mentor, not only in music, but also in a philosophy that I liken to master Yoda, who tells young Luke,,, "We have what those before us have left behind, and this is the true tests of all masters." End of line. Beautiful touch you have indeed my dear. Ronnie

I saw her once in Richmond, VA and David Russell and Manuel Barrueco there as well. The builder of her guitar was Tommy Rodriguez, a real pro luthier.

Wonderful. But it would be even more fantastic, when the names of the pieces and their composers would be mentioned throughout this fantsatic tribute recordings.
