"I wear the blackest of the black." Space Marine Chaplains are the spiritual advisors of the Astartes. They traditionally wear black armor and wear skull faced helmets. The skull themes are supposed to remind everyone of the sacrifice made by the Emperor, and to inspire the troops to a similar dedication to the Imperium.

Richard Boylan is a Candian Combat Infantry Vet. He found "Gaunts Ghosts" while serving in Afghanistan and fell in love with the 40k universe. Once he got out he went to work for the studio that made Mass Effect 3. He was a set & city designer for the game. He embarked on Helsreach as a way to get not only expand his tool box but also to express his love for the 40k universe. He was the very first fan creator that started and FINISHED a 40k fan work. He was then hired by Games Workshop to be a part of their Animation studio as a director. Currently he is working on Angel's of Death.

Side note.... the black Maltese cross as displayed on the Black Templars is not the symbol of the old Order of the Templars but is often confused as such. It is actually the symbol of the Knights Hospitaller or the Order of St John (the modern St John's Ambulance). The symbol of the Nights Templar is actually a Red Cross on a white background.... On a second note the ritual of slapping a new knight's face is correct and the words "let this blow be the last you receive unanswered" is also historically accurate.
@anselmvondahl2881

Which is kinda weird, because a Red Maltese cross on a white background is the symbol for another Imperial Fists successor chapter, the Hospitallers.

Some of the stories he talks about are really touching, and show the human side of not just shattered Astartes, but also their Primarchs, and even the Emperor. Jealousy, loneliness, loss, trauma, doubt. You name it.

The strike is part of the dubbing ceremony. Knights in the middle ages would receive a ritualistic strike when they were made a knight. Like Helbrecht said it was supposed to be the last time the newly minted knight was to receive a blow and not answer back as honor demanded. You will see it in modern times, like when Queen Elizabeth knights someone, as a tap on the shoulder with a sword.

"Helsreach" is a book, the voice you hear is Jonathan Keeble who voiced the audiobook version. In regards to PTSD. Its rare but there are a few instances where this happens, but it usually takes an increadible much for it to happen. Notable cases are: Dravian Klayde a Raven Guard Legionaire who got nearly killed and had to witness his men being massacred by a particularly brutal alien species. He himself lost both his legs and an arm, so when he was found days later by allied forces everybody was rather supprised he was still alive. He recieved the nickname "the Carrion" both as a joke of his corpselike state and as a secondary meaning of "The carry-on",. He was unfit for combat duty after the incident and was ordered to retrain into becoming a tech marine Garviel Loken, after having to come to terms that his father betrayed the Emperor and send all the loyalist to die on Isstvan 5. He was nearly killed by his brother Abbadon and was sought dead, he narrowly survived the slaughter and was pretty much the last surviving person on the entire world. He was stuck there for years being alone with his despair having only the rotting corpse of his brothers to talk with. Whats worse that planet was infested with nurgle plague zombies. That made him lose himself completly, creating the persona of "cerberus" to protect what was left of his broken mind. Horus Aximand, a traitor who fought on Isstvan 5 too. Like Loken the whole thing gave him PTSD too, as he couldnt cope with the fact that he had to kill his own brothers. Chapter Master Thrasius, lost his will to live after failing to defend their homeworld of Sotha and its people from an Tyrannid hivefleet. While he wasnt the commander during the fall of Sotha, at that point he was the Captain of 3rd company, he was the one to take over command during the fall of their capital city/fotress monestary. He panicked after it became clear that they wherent just losing but had already lost and ordered a complete withdrawl from the planet itself. Admiting later to his superior Tetrach Felix, that very fact.

The Black Templars are a fascinating chapter. They fight in a religious ferver and rage unlike other chapters. This is a huge contrast to the style of the Ultramarines, who by comparison are a very procedural and strategic chapter. The Black Templars are a very different kind of Astartes hell.

It's cool that you are starting into this. Helsreach is my favorite story probably in 40k. I came across the physical book nearly ten years ago at a small book store when I was pretty new to warhammer. I own this story as a physical copy, a digital copy along with the following novel Blood and Fire, and the full audio book. Truly an amazingly well done piece of war fiction. For those who might want to own a physical copy of Helsreach, Games Workshop has rereleased it in the Masterworks Collection.

There are examples of Astartes having mental breaks in the novels and short-stories. If I remember correctly you actually see an example of that in Helsreach later on. Astartes do not process stress (fear) like we do, but they still feel those stressors, and these people do on occasion break from all of the stress. Survivor’s Guilt is a big thing for some Astartes. The reason why Chaplains and Apothecaries are CONSTANTLY assessing the mental state of their battle brothers is that when an Astartes has a mental breakdown it can be devastating in the worst way possible to the people around them.

The RU-vidr "Arch" has a great series on the 3rd war of Armageddon, within which the battle of Helsreach takes place. One thing I find amazing is the size of the space battle on the edge of the star system before the actual ground war started. There were literally tens of thousands of ships on both sides and casualties in the millions. By the way, as for your PTSD question. Blood Angels develop what's known as the black rage, an uncontrollable state of mind which leads to them having to be put down. There's also the devolving of the space wolves into wulfen over time. And similar to the thunder warriors, the precursors to the space Marines, would also lose their sanity over time.

Fun little tidbit: Richard Boylan had given little clues to help identify which squad member is which through their armor. There are multiple Power Armor Marks that the Space Marines have used: II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII. Cador, who is the oldest of the squad, dons the Mark IV ‘Maximus’ which is the oldest variant among the squad. This also hammers in that Cador is a veteran (Sword Brother, in Black Templar lingo) as they don’t just give MKIV armor willy-nilly. It’s rare due to its age and only those who have proven themselves gain the honor to wear it, like Cador. Artarion wears the Mark V ‘Heresy’ pattern as he sorta is the black sheep of the bunch. His tendancies to crack jokes as well as position as a Standard Bearer set him apart from his squaddies. The Mark V usually has bad connotations to it as it was primarily used by Traitors during the Horus Heresy as well as having lower quality than other marks. Priamus dons the Mark VII ‘Aquila’ pattern, as he is the youngest of the bunch. The Mark VII is the most recent pattern of SM power armor, barring the Mark VIII and the Mark X that Primaris Marines use. Bastilan wears the Mark VI ‘Corvus’ pattern because of what he is. He is an aged soul who is typically overshadowed by others for traits that he simply lacks. The Corvus is just as old as the Heresy pattern and is designed to be stealthy as per the parameters of its namesake, Primarch Corvus Corax of the Raven Guard. Nerovar and Grimaldus are easier to distinguish due to their badges of office. Grimaldus, as a chaplain, has the iconic skull helm as well as a mace called the Crozius Arcanum. Though, in canon art he doesn’t use a skull helm but what appears to be heavily modified MK VII Helmet. Must’ve been a design choice by Boylan or it’s just the limitations of his tools at the time. Nerovar, as an Apothecary, has the Diagnostor Helmet, Narthecium (that saw-toothed tool on his arm) and various backpack mounted tools. Furthermore, his armor is primarily white as supposed to the black of the Black Templars.

Second thing during your breakdown , It could be argued that a lot of dreadnoughts have PTSD-like symptoms when the marine has just recently been entombed and is still adjusting to their new existence. Take Telemechrus in Know no Fear. In the books I've read it's something the dreadnoughts themselves keep quiet about, struggling quietly as they become used to how things are for them now.

The shooting in the left hand and sword in the right was a common fighting style taken from Victorian-era British officers. It was changed in World War 1 because the swords made it too easy for German snipers to pick them out from long distance... and kill them. Swords were still used by cavalry, though. The first British kill in WW1 was made by a sword on horseback. This is what inspired Warhammer 40k's bolter + chainsword combo. edit: it was also a common fighting style with marines and pirates of the same era. There were also the German 'reiters' (don't know if I spelt that right) who fought with pistol and sword on horseback mostly.

That floating skull is called a "servo-skull". They're like little helper drones that can be equipped to scan or move things, provide overwatch, or be rigged as semi-intelligent mines. They're real skulls, of real people, strapped to a mechanized frame. Whether the lobotomized brain of the person is still in there, or there's some AI controlling it we can't really say. Afaik, the mechanicus builds them, and they're not the most forthcoming on HOW. It's a book, this is a narrated version. The Black Templars are, in the most literal of terms, an order of Crusading Knights. They make no home outside their flotilla of ships, and train, pray, fight, and die in an endless parade of conflicts as they bounce around to battle zones in basically whatever order or priority their High Marshall dictates. Chaplains are the spiritual guides of a chapter, the highest ranking chaplain in the Black Templars is called the Reclusiarch. Think of chaplains as morale officers. Oh definitely marines have mental breakdowns, in fact, the large walkers, called dreadnoughts, have mortally wounded Marines inside them, and they're often so old they've lost any sense of self, and are kept in stasis until deployed, you never know when one will snap. The eldest of the Dreadnoughts is a Space Wolf marine named Bjorn the Fellhanded, and it's estimated he's just over 10,000 years old. He's one of the few surviving Marines from the Great Crusade, and it's possible he may have fought alongside the emperor himself, or at least during the time before the heresy. Nowadays, the space wolves wake him to have him recount the history of the chapter to new initiates, from the eyes of someone who lived it.

All Astartes are trained to be ambidextrous, proficient with pistols and melee weapons in either hand. In the case of Bolt Rifles and other such weapons, they favor the right because the spent casings eject from that side. As to the question of PTSD in Space Marines, it's possible, but I would imagine extraordinarily rare compared to a baseline human. Neurologically, PTSD occurs when the brain is so overwhelmed by trauma, fear, and/or physical pain, it loses the ability to place the long-term memory of those events in proper context. Between their conditioning and biological augmentation, an Astartes would certainly be resistant to such an event, but not necessarily immune.

The neurological process could still be taking place. The associated memories would still be formed without context, and may intrude on their present time. When you get into it, it's easy to mix up the Dark Angels and the Salamanders as they both have green armor. "That's from the spacemarine game" It's a servo skull. Due to an AI revolt the imperium has banned all artificial intelligence. So what do they use instead? Lobotomized humans mixed with computers. You'll see servitors later in the series, which is an even more grotesque example of this. This is a faith reserved for the worst offenders in the imperium. If space marines got PTSD it would have happened during the conversion part, and they'd have been weeded out. Ha! I just got finished watching your previous video, and you've already got this one up. Buckle yourself in Peachbutt! You're in for a ride! On the voices: Yes, all of the dialogue is actually from the audiobook. The visuals are fanmade, as is some of the sound effects, but the words and voices are straight from book of the same name. This video series is literally the audiobook in visual form. On the visuals: This changes up later in the series. I don't know if Boylan got tired of applying a filter to the stuff he made, but later on, there's more color. Even then, it's hard to tell that this thing was made entirely in Source. On "Judged": Astartes can be very old-timey at times. Think "medieval knight orders in space." It's not rare that one of their promotions be acted out in the form of a demotion or punishment. It's often done this way to ensure that the person they're promoting doesn't have any undue aspirations. To guarantee that the person getting the promotion is actually worthy of it. Fun fact: One thing that shows Bastilan's age is his "beakie" helmet. It's Mk VI, which isn't exactly old, but is still far from new. I don't remember this being part of the book, so it's a nice touch that Boylan added. He might be "forever a sergeant", but to wear such a helmet is still a high mark of recognition from his chapter. Any astartes who looked at him would immediately know that, despite his rank, he is a person to be respected. On the Black Templars: The Codex Astartes (which Roboute Guilliman wrote in order to prevent any single chapter from becoming too powerful) limits the number of Astartes than any chapter can have, but makes an exception for chapters that are on crusade. The Black Tempars are ALWAYS on crusade. They kick ass in The Emperor's name, and since The Emperor is kinda comatose, they have nothing to do except kick ass. They constantly break the rules, but for good reasons. On Space Marines and PTSD: There is none. They are too psychoconditioned to allow this. The closest you'll get to that is them questioning their faith in The Emperor and what The Imperium stands for. You'll see this a lot in the Horus Heresy novels that you mentioned listening to. (Also VERY MUCH The Lamenters if you decide to read their books). For Astartes, there is no POST to the PTSD. They never leave their war. War is their life, and all they will ever know. If they get twitchy in between fights, it only means that they're ready for the next one. PTSD is what happens when people who have been through war have to readjust to peace. Astartes do not know peace. They only know the brief periods of continuous training that happens in between battles. P.S. Don't feel bad about getting different chapters mixed up. There's a lot of them, and only so many color combinations to go around. Just remember that Salamanders are green, and Dark Angels are a somewhat slightly darker green. Got it? All good? Alright. I mean, it's not like I also thought they were Salamanders at first. 'Cause I'm definitely too much of a fan to ever make that mistake. Definitely.

On that note you mentioned in the middle about 10 min in, the reason when they carry 2 weapons a blade and gun, is that in this case the blade is their primary weapon and the bolt pistol is their secondary. they wish to wield their sword with maximum dexterity and Strength and then still be able to fire upon targets too distant to close the gap. And since space marines have trained with their weapons for Hundreds of years they can shoot just as accurately left handed as right, same goes for their sword arm, but humans are dumb and old habits die hard so why break hundreds of years of muscle memory at that point?

The Helsreach Crusade (the storyline this book is based off of) is taking place during an event known as "The Third War for Armageddon". Armageddon is the planet that they're heading to. It was one of the largest conflicts in the newest edition of 40k. Armageddon has been held by the Imperium for over 10,000 years, BUT it actually had a name before this. It's true name is Ullanor, and is, wait for it, the HOMEWORLD of the ORKS. That should give you an idea of what and why this conflict is about to happen. The Orks also fought in the second war for Armageddon, but this next conflict dwarfs it by a good deal. Over 50,000 Astartes fought in this conflict. They needed that kind of firepower.

After the End of the Horus Heresy, Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines decidet to split the Astartes- Legions into Chapters around 1000 Marines each. (Some are more, but all who followed the "Codex Astartes" are only 1000 Man). The "Black Templars" are a Chapter of the "second Foundation" from the 7th. Legion, the Imperial Fists, so they are Son's of Rogal Dorn as the Imperial Fists too. The Black Templars don't follow the Rules of the Codex Astartes. A Codex loyal Chapter has 10 Campany's with each 100 Marines. 1st & 2nd Company are the Veterans (including most of the Terminator's) 3rd Company is the Assault- Company (fast attacks, hit and run etc.) 4th, 5th and 6th Company are the Battlecompany. The 7th, 8th and 9th Company are the Reservecompany. The 10th Company is the Scout Company (Space Marines in apprenticeship). The Black Templars are a Crusadechapter, that means the he dont have a Homeworld, they can recruit wherever they want. They are organized in Crusade- Fleet's. Every Crusade- Fleet ist commaned by a Marshall (and can be a lot more than 100 Marines). The highest Posision in he entire Chapter is the Highmarshall (the officiating Highmarshall is "Helbrecht"). They only Person who knows exactly how mutch Marines are in the entire Chapter, is the Highmarshall. In the Black Templars, Chaplain's can be a leading Position, that is special and in a Codex loyal Chapter , it will never be happend. The Highest Chaplain is the "Master of Sanctity" under him stands the "Reclusiarch's. They can found on the Battlefield not less as Squad- Commanders

Most normal humans just like now are right handed but Space Marines by dint of their augmentations are all ambidextrous without exception, though if i was welding a sword and gun at the same time as a normal human i would shoot with my left and sword with by right because if you're using both at the same time chances are the enemy wont be long from sword range and the drop off in accuracy would not matter as much as having your sword in your strong hand.

All space marine chaplains, regardless of chapter, wear black armor. Black is seen as being especially devoted to the Emperor, so Black Templar chaplains wear "the blackest of the black". And as far as I'm aware, it is an audiobook and he is using the audio from it but is making the animation for it. One of the things I love about Helsreach is that you know who each of the marines are, either by their armor or by their voice and they're very distinct characters, which is pretty rare for the Astartes. As for an Astartes suffering from PTSD, it's pretty much impossible. Part of their training and elevation to an astartes is brainwashing and psycho-conditioning. As Arch said in his video on the Black Templars, which is very applicable here, they are fanatical mass murder machines and as Grimaldus himself said, he lives only to kill until he is finally killed.

think that left hand pistol grip is really because if they are going in with sword and pistol like that the sword is the primary weapon not the gun. but really there isn't any reason behind it besides artist quirk and how the table top models are made.

if you look at the effekts that ptsd can have. many of them do things that are close to normalising them or are specific to neutralise them. Traind and indoctrinaited from a very young age, Praying for Hours per day, dehumanising enemys to thepoint it is not a bad thing to kill them but the best thing you can do in youre live. not only for you but for humanety and youre god.at the same time vary little thingsthat can traumatise you (they are prakticaly imune to fear) Death as a certanty (the only thing thats changing is the colore of the sky), but there are storysabout marines that break down, going mad, most of them fall in battle orjoin the traitor legions

the floating skulls are servoskulls honored servants are given the honor of serving the imperium after death they can be a lot of things, like scout drones for marines extra hands for tech priests or some even have minor roles like finding books for a scribe in an administratum world they are the closest to autonomous drones the imperium gets as ai is outlawed, machines with intelligence must have a biological component the skull is that biological part to ensure purity, to make the machine more reliable by adding a loyal soul to the machine spirit of the construct atleast thats one explanation servoskulls are many and varied so there are many theories behind them

On Helsreach, the animator has ......difficulty(?) doing both Space Marine combat, along with the giant Titan combat, everything else is spot on @#$@#$#%$# wow! He literally "nails" how Warhound Titans both move and are utilized in traps, its just the Mega-Gargants and Imperiator Class, he ....got lost in? I guess? (a lot of the art we have on Imperiator's don't lend too much on explaining how those behemoth Cathedrals on legs get around at all.... much less quickly.) the Marine combat lacks follow through along with any real concepts of the weight involved however doesn't look like kung-fu action grip moves either its just uncanny valley different and since the whole thing looks like its stencil art and the "whole thing" is like 2 and a half hours, I can only applaud the work. At points the voice acting and facial interactions are ...awkward, however for the most part its a solid representation of Armageddon. His strengths are his backgrounds. ...when you can see them. As a "slice of life": daily interaction piece on the Black Templars, (how they interact with Salamanders is HILARIOUS!) it is almost without equal.

Also this movie is gonna open the fuck outta your eyes lol. Grimaldus is one of the deepest characters I've ever seen in Warhammer, and I've seen a lot. He's very against the grain. And to answer your question, most astartes become very fatalistic. They know their purpose is to fight until they die one day. They're all about the glory on the way there. Because they're so fatalistic they're virtually fearless. They don't really crack either
@Razgriz_01

A shame that "don't really crack" part is also what makes them so dangerous if they ever fall to Chaos, its due to that mental resilience that they always become Chaos Lords.

It's interesting to see the difference between modern astartes and Great Crusade astartes. Horus rebelled because he didn't like the way (he thought) things would go after the war. Ten thousand years later, and modern astarrtes don't expect to live long enough to ever see peace.
