@@GlitchTheG4merthe RGB video output of some Mega Drive / Genesis consoles has vertical "stripes", mostly in the blue / blue-ish colours, which I believe are caused by interference from the composite video output. These are known as "jailbars".
"Roped in for free"... I'd put it as "freely involved", hah. It was common to "reuse" "engines" between bootlegs from what I could tell as I have encountered these specific ones during the 2000s, even if I originally had a Dendy at the time which was an NES clone. Didn't stop me from looking at other games on other systems via emulators, though, found those and was... puzzled to say the least. Oh, and whilst this isn't mentioned in the video, "Around the World" one has an in-game shop for powerups if you pause and hit "C".

Around the World did NOT have a shop. It's Mario 4 Space Odyseey that did, although I ran out of time to include it in the video as it didn't affect the ratings :) And again, thanks for the translations!
Perhaps "Around the World" was expected to be played on a certain bootleg of a Mega Drive that behaved in different ways that the game accounted for, instead of a genuine one? Just a guess.
BMB, the Russian developer, likely only assumed people wpuld be playing it on Russian Sega clones. A few later Chinese Famicom bootlegs have issues running on authentic hardware vs. clones.

It looks like Mario 3 Around the World failed to go around the world with different regional consoles. This is an excellent and well-documented video, as well. Bonus points for including Super Mario Galaxy's soundtrack.
It's even funnier when the absolute madlads at the sonic romhacking community were able to do what these bootleggers couldn't: make Super Mario run on Genesis hardware. The anti-piracy features were simply far too effective and thwarted every attempt each bootlegger made.
@@Gaia_BentosZX5 The Sonic ROM hacking community is not the community that ports Mario to hardware. Unless you mean a community where homebrewers or bootleggers put the character on the Genesis, then it makes sense.
Let me point some things out: 1. Please DO NOT call these homebrews. Homebrews are original games (most of the time, sometimes they're fan games) made by either one guy or a team usually sold first-hand. Bootlegs, on the other hand, are games made by companies using copyrighted franchises to make a quick buck and are usually sold using third-parties. 2. The first game you tested wasn't a bootleg, but rather a 2010 homebrew. 3. I think the problem with Mario 3 & 4 were they were made and tested on clone Russian "Dendy" hardware (which used very different and more exploitable hardware than the real deal) and therefore why they don't work as well on official consoles. So, after some research, all of these games are bootlegs. Except the very first showcase as you said is a homebrew. I did say in the video "some are ports/homebrews" which I was referring to SMB1 on the Genesis. Then according to this site below, the homebrew was pirated and then sold on. So, yes, you're correct, SMB1 itself isn't technically a bootleg, but it was pirated and sold on. So, I’ve got a theory. When the NES/FC was first cloned, it was not a perfect clone and had some quirks. Because of the fact that most bootleg games developed for the hardware were created specifically to run under these limitations and hardware quirks, many behave differently or even break when played on official systems. Future clones were made with these games in mind and purposefully kept these issues, even modern NES-on-a-chip systems have them. My guess is Mario 3: Around the World is much of a similar case. It was developed in China but made to be sold in Russia, hence the game being in Russian. Chances are, it was tested and developed on a Genesis clone. And clone manufacturers needed to base it off something, so what did they do? Buy a random Genesis they found, not knowing it was a specific revision. The clone manufacturers imported a specific Genesis and cloned that, accidentally making it so the sound doesn’t work entirely the same. Then, the game was developed on that unit and never tested on official hardware until the last minute, which would explain why the issues all seem to be linked to playing sound (block breaking sfx, pipe sfx, death sound, music, etc.) When they did test it, they found it didn’t work on specific models, and quickly implemented a fix. (Though they likely didn’t test that fully either and so yet more problems resulted)

In my personal opinion i'd say that they're all broken except for the first one the NES original, at least when that one doesn't show the full graphics you can just reload the game and the graphics come back. This was a great video. Glad to have you back again RHS.
I nearly agree. With all the EverDrives, this is the case. But as explained, if you put the ROM only on a cart (no EverDrive menus), the level graphics are shifted. And no amount of rebooting/reloading will fix it. Unless you have a TMSS consoles. It's a bizarre one for sure 🤔
Does Mario 3 Around the World crash or stop the music when played on chinese/russian Genesis clones? I think it was made with Genesis SoC clones in mind
I have a question: Does Sonic Jam 6 count as a Mario bootleg for the Genesis? Because it's literally just Super Mario Bros. but with Sonic (and the 3 hidden warp pipes in 5-2 are absent - they'd normally lead to World 6, 7 or 8, depending on which one you picked). It also has terrible controls! After going further into the video, I noticed that Sonic Jam 6 and Super Mario Bros. 2 Genesis have the same *decent* (for a bootleg, anyway) music and the same terrible controls! (does SMB2 Genesis have a run button btw? Because SJ6 does.)
I think the reason why Super mario Bros 3 around the world doesn't work correctly might have to do with it only working on a dendy genesis console Dend is the Russian name brand for video gane console like the dendy nes dendy snes and dendy genesis as all three dendy console are bootlegs

Just tried Mario 3 on my European Megadrive Model 1 and I can break blocks but it crashes when falling down a pit or entering a pipe After messing with the sound menu I got the pit death to work correctly but the pipe still gave issues Why is it like this!?

There is a bootleg felix the cat made by the same guys as 3 and 4 which has a horrifying image where felix has his head skinned, its almost like these russian bootleggers liked traumatizing children.

None of them make the cut for my Everdrive playlist, they're all fairly janky. I wish they'd remade Super Boy 4 from Master System, that was actually a really good Mario bootleg/clone. The SMS version has close to 16-bit looking graphics, a Mega Drive version would have looked incredible.

Well, this was certainly a weird episode, especially in regards to Mario 3 and 4. Although, once I heard most of the games were bootlegs, I had little hope for them, both for hardware compatibility and game quality. That being said, if Sonic can run 90% accurately on the SNES, I think Mario can run perfectly fine on the Sega machines, especially if that Super Mario Bros port is anything to go off of. Hope someone actually makes good Genesis ports of the Mario games. They better... >:/

Well to make the long story short red hot sonic some Mario bootleg on genesis/megadrive is sometimes illegal. I just seen the sonic demonstration not the full port on Super Nintendo also known as super famicom in japan.
There *ARE* actually physical cartridges of Super Mario World 64, New Super Mario World, and Mario 4: Space Odyssey, and it has been confirmed that all 3 completely work on a Genesis Model 1 (courtesy of SpaceHamster). Meaning, potentially, Mario 3: Around the World and Mario 4: Space Odyssey ALSO have some form of copyright protection?
Potentially as AtW and SP, along with the others were played in flashcarts and none of them worked properly as explained, and the dumps that were used to play the game online do not have the lockout unlocked and thus couldn't run for most models (either only through option settings and/or being required to work on specific revision-locked (for most regions) or possibly by a console that may bypass the lockout.)
I am the only one that the game "Super Mario Bros" works for me without errors, and that my SEGA console is a Chinese one that imitates the Genesis 3, and an Everdrive-MD 2x v38 cartridge, And the games Mario 3: Around the World & Mario 4: Space Odyssey also work well for me, the only difference is that the music will stop when it makes contact with a block, enters a pipe or when it dies, so I have to disable the sound to listen to these songs without them stopping.
it's weird how I've seen quite a few of these bootlegs being talked about from people here in Brazil, or more specifically, from Kane, from Kane TV, with him even having a cartridge for one of the ROMs... and tbh I wouldn't doubt some of these bootlegs would have some different chipset on their cartridge, that would make them work on the local modified hardwares of the country they were made at, maybe even on some other Mega Drive models
You should try Mario's Mystery Meat on the SNES, it's quite an amazing accomplishment for how much stuff is in it for a rom hack made on Super Mario World
Sorry but "you have to press reset" = PARTIALLY but "you have to mess with the code" = YES Is honestly kinda nonsense rating...... if anything, it really should be the other way around. (Also the 'weird' sprites where he 'sits like a cat'... exist in the original all-stars and original 8-bit versions of SMB as well. That has nothing to do with this game and everything to do with the original sprites.
Did you even watch the video? As I said, "The reset button issue isn't enough to sway my verdict." Meaning if that was the only issue, then it would have gotten a 'yes'. But after further testing, the game itself won't run correctly on non-TMSS consoles as explained (and even with TMSS consoles, issues may arise depending on the cart because of the way the game sets it's beginning RAM). If you think playing the game with offset level terrain, or it even with it completely missing with sprites only in the screen is worth a yes, then that's your opinion. This is the game itself at fault (the pure ROM only dictated this); hence it's partial rating. As for SMB2, you don't have to mess with the code; you just download the correct ROM. Or if you do choose to mess with the code to fix the copyright, that's because it's the cart causing the issue. Proof? These copyright errors also happens on emulators. Hence it still got a yes, but with an asterisk (as explained with the Sonic fix not being acceptable but SMB2 being an exceptional circumstance). If the issue was something else like, it crashed on the title screen or something similar, then I agree, it would have been a 'no' rating. Anyway, at the end of the day, these ratings aren't official in any way. You can come to your own conclusion, of course. I'm just explaining my way of thinking here. As for the cat sitting down, fair enough. My bad. Like I said, I'm not a fanatic about Mario and I'm breaching out to other franchises slowly. So that's a new lesson for me.
I actually really like the SMB1 Genesis music. It gives me a weird nostalgic feeling and i'm not sure why. Also i really appreciate the reverse engineering going on there also
It's funny seeing an audio driver option for 16 bit proprietary consoles. The bootleg market really did come with so many bizarre and unique hardware combinations, but coding compatibility for several different audio chips sounds like a nightmare honestly, especially since the difference in samples between the consoles.
