I've loved Mario Lanza since i was 14. He died 3 years later and i was devastated. Many other people no doubt felt the same. For me he has the greatest voice ever and i love him as much today as i did when i first heard him all those years ago. I still sing his songs.
Mario has been called "The King of Tenors." He was also the king of popular singers and inspired millions just like Placido Domingo. A new book, " A Kid from Philadelphia, Mario Lanza, the Voice of the Poets," captures the essence of Lanza that a new generation needs to enjoy. The book, his recordings, his CDs, movies, and You Tube clips explain why he is a legend who gives amazing pleasure and passion that no one else can duplicate.
Just wow....what a voice!...And he wasn't hard to deal with...they couldn't control him and that is why he was "difficult." Too bad he died so young and his wife died a few months after him. Poor children...
It is interesting how they say that Mario Lanza was hard to deal with because of his character. If you ask me,even if that is true, anyone who can sing like that should be given the card that gives him right to do whatever the hell he wants to do.
I totally agree. A temperamental personality is so often part of the package when you have such a great talent. Like a fine racehorse. I would cut Mario a lot of slack. His talent was out of this world. If you want him you must take ALL of him.

Oh, my, how wonderful... I learned of Domingo around 1980, with the album he did with John Denver. I was 19-ish, and loved him; it helped a dark period in my life. I still love him, and, Mario Lanza, of course. Sweet. Thank you.
it is an interesting observation by Mario, that not being a well schooled musician was an asset to him, rather than a detriment.Bing Crosby said, about himself, that he thought he (Bing) was a better singer before he learned to sight read music. What I believe they ment is strict adherence to the timing as written on the score in regard to the words, boxes in the singer to sound unnatural.
