Considering this is midterm I like to think this guy realized there was no way he was going to pass this class and decided to go out in a blaze of glory.

I love how the teacher just repeatedly scribbled out "stomp a turty." You can see them reaching their breaking point as they read that line.

"you can't just say perchance" runs through my brain every time I write an essay. I don't even use the word but it helps me keep myself from just adding phrases that don't add anything to the essay. so, in a way, Mario, the Idea vs Mario, the Man has helped me get better grades on essays

That was not a bad grade, the teacher was merely paying respects for this piece of art we call a "philosophy paper".

The more I've watched this, the more sense it actually makes - Mario, the idea, is an ideal, chivalrous character who risks his life daily. But once you examine Mario, the man, you realize he actually risks very little, since lives are simply a store of value, and he's rich. Perchance.

He is only this intelligent because his parents didn't baby talk to him

I like how this is actually somewhat understandable when you think about it. Mario is a well known figure, but his motivations for killing turtles are unclear since it's not strictly necessary to kill all the "enemies" to save Peach. Especially the turtles which are really just minding their own business. So it's not as straightforward as you might think. And presumably Kant's philosophy was a topic of the class, so he's applying that idea to Mario--his catchphrase "let's-a-go" reflects his worldview of carefree gumption, which is expressed when he kills turtles without thought. And the third paragraph is where it actually gets interesting. His point is that we think Mario is a hero for risking his life, but to Mario, life is really just money. And he's so rich that he's basically become immortal. So can we really call him a hero if he's so privileged? Food for thought. Perchance.

I like how he _kind of_ starts to make a point in the third paragraph, and the teacher's comments almost get more curious like they want to see where he's going with it...and then it's just ruined.

This man is on to something. Mario doesn't HAVE to kill goombas or koopas. He can simply avoid them.

The "Perchance" at the end almost killed me. No seriously, I almost choked on my food. I could have died there, because of a Philosophy midterm about Mario. Isn't that crazy to think about? Perchance.

I love the second perchance. As if he already knew the reaction to the first one so he just added another one to the end for maximum frustration.

The word “turtle” isn’t spelled the same a single time in this paper, but some would argue that’s what keeps it fresh and intriguing.

Maybe I’m crazy but I think his point is this: ‘Mario’s potential heroism is irrelevant when death and sacrifice are questions of money buying lives. He risks nothing.’

I love how the teachers notes imply that, had it been worded differently, they would have likely accepted it.

My favorite part is absolutely the "stop". It's like the teacher is truly pleading with the student to stop, begging them to end their misery.

The teacher's "Ok" and "Fine" actually show they were willing to take this paper seriously if it made serious points, and I think that's amazing.

I think the best thing about this is that the teacher isn’t questioning why the paper is about the psychological state of Mario, just correcting the student’s approach.

This is a comedic masterpiece. It feels like the author was trying to convey an actual concept that none of us will ever be equipped to understand. The only essay that's so bad it's good. Perchance

"Keep it baby!" is not in quotes. Mario never said that, and the author is aware of that. Instead, "Keep It Baby!" is merely Phil Jamesson's applause for Mario's turtle crashing habit, encouraging him to keep up the good work. Perchance.

I have to say, the part about Mario having a skewed sense of the value of life because he's able to buy it with money could actually be an interesting discussion for a philosophy class.

I'm no philosophy professional, but I genuinely think this could be a real, insightful essay about the pointlessness of heroism if lives are purchasable, if only the author only cared to spend more than 10 minutes on it. Perchance.

It's funny because I feel the thought process behind the "Perchance.". I think he just asked a friend for tips, and his friend was like "well you can use advanced and sophisticated words, like Perchance, and that will give the corrector a good feel with you. And he didn't even Google what the word Perchance meant.

This says a lot about Mario’s recent actions and how he is slowly becoming suspicious

His philosophy is so high level that he's getting bashed for it, just like classical philosophers back in the day

I love the flat "fine" since it inplies that the professor is conceding that he has a decent argument but at the same time hates it for being associated with the rest of the paper.

Holy shit THIS is where this is from?! So I'm a philosophy TA, I teach bioethics, logic and an introduction to philosophy course. And this year I've been getting a SHIT TON of essays with the word "perchance" with it. I couldn't figure out how 40 students were continuously using this word wrong. Eventually I asked the prof I teach under wtf was going on and he said he didn't know. I then pulled one of my better students aside (aiming for med school) and asked wtf was going on. She said it was an internet meme. I couldn't figure out where this from coming from until one of my students sent me an email linking this video. Man this is way funnier than I thought it would be. I too got trolled but thankfully none of my students took on topics like this and stuck to the "perchance" part of the meme. I feel like a boomer despite being 25. I will say, i wouldn't have failed this paper. And I'll give it to my students they really got me. I can't believe they collectively decided to do this. Update: I have some of the same students again this year for a 300 level logic course. About 10 of them confirmed they all did shrooms together in their dorm room and decided this meme was the funniest thing ever and thought I was chill enough to let it slide. No one failed the class and I gave a makeup assignment to those who scored below a 60% average at the end of the course. Class average was 78% and they nominated me TA of the year last year. I'm really happy everything ended well and appreciate the students efforts in taking a course no one willingly takes.

I find it hilarious how interspersed among the grader's reaction to the insanity of this essay there are some suggestions that are just normal-ass suggestions that you would definitely be told in a writing class, like how the "I believe" before "it was Kant" is crossed out because it makes you sound less sure of your information and thus less convincing.

I'm looking at the comments, and as someone who studies English, this essay is a prime example of why being able to write well is such an important skill. You can have the most brilliant idea in the world, but if you can't communicate it, you might as well be speaking a different language. Perchance.

He a little confused, but he got the spirit Jokes aside, diving into the psychology of what happens to mario when lives can be bought and sold is rather interesting. Why else would he happily kill Bowser's minions and put himself into haphazard situations if he truly feels that life is worth less than the coins he finds in boxes everyday

I love how deep yet absolutely surface level this guy is. Mario, a man who can buy lives, does what? What would you do if you had infinite lives, infinite retries? Well he steps on turts I guess.

Honestly, as a philosophy student, the logic has some credibility and could be a good paper were it not for the abysmal writing. Perchance.

The highlight is how the student predicted how triggering that "crushing turtle" would be, so he proceeded with variations of it using ever more silly shorts for turtle like turts.

Absolute classic. My girlfriend and I randomly add “perchance” to sentences when we talk to each other, at which point the other says “YOU CANT JUST SAY PERCHANCE”

My absolute favorite part of this is the tentative “Ok.” followed by the begrudging but somewhat impatient “Fine.” finally ending in the outburst of “Why are we saying this?” They had this clear moment of thinking that, maybe, just maybe, there was going to be an argument somewhere in there. They were waiting for it to happen, and then it just never did.
